Mercs MD is a nice port and the original mode is fantastic but it's still single-player only, ain't nuthin' "way better" about that.

We (titan) released a brand new Sega Megadrive production last night , a music-cart featuring the demoscene's hottest musicians doing Iron Maiden chipsongs.

download here and get those everdrives ready: Stuck somewhere in time

Featuring a brand new amiga .mod and .AHX replayer , press select to switch to the tracker-screen. and have fun figuring out the hidden part. :) Eddie is watching u!

Really cool!

Any reason why it's made for PAL only?

Don't have a flashcart handy (or a 50Hz PAL Mega Drive for that matter, just a 60Hz NTSC-U Genesis), but it runs very well on Exodus, at least. (Kega Fusion's sound goes to shit a few seconds into the .MOD playback, but given Exodus is supposed to be cycle-accurate and Kega isn't, not too surprising?)

The shout-out thing at the bottom is fascinating but also sooooo loooooooooooong

Looks cool in RetroArch with CRT-Royale:

Audio seems perfect as well.

Neat.

Speaking of demos, I saw a physical cart of Titan's Overdrive being auctioned earlier this month and got curious where it came from and, since I didn't win it, if I could buy one straight from the source, as well as potential future releases from Titan or any other group.

If there are any official stores selling these things I can't find them, nor anything about upcoming stuff, or even any information on which demos to date have been put on carts and sold, and that made me think I probably wasn't the intended "market" for these things. I figured it was worth asking though, now that people are talking about demos and someone from Titan popped in.

This is really, really cool! Love Iron Maiden, and it sounds great! It always bums me out how little Genesis gets used for chiptune projects, since it has a certain sound that just can't be emulated by Nintendo sound chips.

Speaking of metal: I reviewed Lords Of Thunder for the Sega CD

Well thats very interresting! There are only 30 made of them. 12 of them went to titan-members, and the rest to some lucky demosceners, i wonder how much it costed at that auction :) we made them non profit and sold the rest for 11 euros.

However , we are still playing with the idea to release a 2nd batch sometime. But its a time consuming process making the boards in china, having a guy solder the chips onto them and shipping them around the world.

I see. I didn't realize the work that went into making them, limiting how many you can make. I understand why you'd want to direct them to select people.

As for price, it sold for surprisingly little, only 350 SEK which is roughly 50 US dollars.

Nostalgia kicked in for me the other day and I picked up one of these at Target for 39.99. Lots of decent first part games on it, compatible with cartridges, and comes with wireless controllers (also is compatible with original Genesis controllers).

Build quality is a bit poor, but pretty good value overall.

Declarative statement: I think Supre Hang On has the best cover art of all time.
Of all time!

I don't really know why I'm so drawn to it. The sweet "blur" effects? Dat font? It feels so period too. This is the first game where I made it a priority to get CIB. lol

Also this song goes with it brilliantly.

Okay, time for bed. I'm obsessing over dumb stuff.

If you need a hand with the soldering, testing and shipping, I believe I can help ;)

It does have a very iconic cover, I also like the drawing on the Master System card (it looks very typical for it's time):

PS: That Redline song is amazing! Listened to it a lot recently.

The font plus the futuristic grid background.

Hi,

I'm interested in picking up a Genesis or Mega Drive for my wife and I.

Is it hard to hook up to an HDTV? Forgive my ignorance :)

Is Genesis or MD more recommended?

Interested in games like Cool Spot and Rocket Knight, not so much in Sonic.

Thanks!

ETA: scratch that. I should really not buy more physical stuff. I'll just get the games I'm interested in via Wii VC.

Bad emulation?

I think it's more like a SoC, kind-of-but-not-really emulation. They never got the sound part right, though.

but you could gut it and put your own roms on there

steve snake did what he could goddamn

Oh hey I didn't know he did it? Obviously he refined his art to give us the mighty Kega Fusion.
Until he disappeared from the internet a couple years ago.

Merciful Jesus, are those IR wireless controllers?

I'm glad people get it with the cover. Something about this resurgence of synth music that I love is how much it heightens my nostalgia for the Genesis. lol I really do love this goddamn machine. Its aesthetics from game covers and hardware to glorious synth beats and sharp graphics... Sega had some kind of black magic going on back then.

Picked up a Japanese Mega drive a couple of days ago in Akiba, with the box in perfect condition, controller and sonic 1 included.

Living in PAL land and wanting to play it on a 1080p lcd do you have any suggestions? I've read something about something called Frameister in this thread... but its fucking expensive. Is it really worth it? Is there an affordable alternative?

Thanks!

The Framemeister is fairly necessary for you, I'd think. If you really don't care about image quality though, you could get a SCART connector for the MD and a cheap SCART to HDMI box from Amazon. They cost around $40 US.

lols, it's from a retro game show called Revansch (Revenge or similar in Swedish). Those dudes tend to exaggerate a bit, but it's a great show.

If he's in PAL land there's a good chance his 1080p TV has a Scart input, and there won't be much difference between its upscaler and a cheap external one.

But it will be ugly. HDTV are terrible with low-res, with bad upscale, input lag, stupid digital square pixels. If you want something to look good, you need a Framemeister. But you will still have input lag sadly.

The input lag doesn't make games unplayable, but it won't feel quite like they do on a SD CRT. Depending on your HDTV, it'll probably feel great. I play on both CRT and a Framemeister, and have no complaints with input lag via the latter except when playing SSBM (but I'm very competitive with that game and need to have a nearly lag free environment).

Chances are, you've felt similar input lag before and have had no trouble playing most games.

I've found scaler-free input lag to be pretty unbearable on the HD sets I've tried it on (including HD CRTs), and I hear that the Framemeister has something like a single frame of lag (maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can confirm). Most people will be fine with that, even if they aren't with a raw console-to-HDTV connection.

I have one too, got it as a gift for xmas one year. And I was in pain when I hooked it up. It's awful. I packed it up and threw it in the attic. I suppose if you never played a Genesis before it might be OK. But if you're a Genny fan, playing that thing will make you want to cry as it butchers your memories.

Wardner is an awesome platformer too. Never seen a US copy, I had the Japanese version as a kid though. Quite difficult a lot like Ghosts & Goblins. Of course Rolling Thunder is great too.

How hard is it to take apart a Genesis controller and put it back together?

Some of the buttons are sticky and i'd like to clean it up a bit.

Super easy? There's only one way for things to fit back in, really.

Cleaning a controller does wonders for it, too. I've brought some flea market finds back from the grave this way.

Extremely easy! Here are some pictures from August back when I did the same:

The only basic watch out is to be organized. Lots of small pieces you don't want to lose.
