Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Quite glad the only real expensive one I need is Lunar 2. Settled for disk only on Popful Mail and got it for $30 a while back.

I really said that as a joke, but now kinda fearing it since they named a few games that I'm trying to get still, and have passed up for slightly higher then the current going rate.

I'm already kicking myself after seeing Terminator on the video :p

It's not the greatest. The controls and look of the game is good but all the enemies take too much to kill and you die too fast comparatively. Doesn't really feel satisfying. Like even basic stuff takes multiple hits and all while they are shooting at you as well.

So the book was at our front office the entire time...since last week heh.

On that note, damn this book is quality! Name in the credits too :D

Time to make a 16 bit Sega playlist, chill out and read.

Okay.

This is driving me nuts.

To the left of the Power Base Converter, there's a mysterious thing that looks to have IR Windows. WHAT THE HECK IS IT? Abandoned prototype? I cannot for the life of me figure out what that thing is!

Have a weird problem. Trying to play mortal kombat 2 with the 6 button controller but it isn't working. I went into the settings and changed the controller to 6 button, but even after doing that it only registers abc and not xyz. Any reason this would happen?

Did you try holding the mode button as you turn the system on?

It took a lot longer than I expected, but I've returned with pictures!

First, I wanted to urge Mr. Sewart to finish the next episode of Generation-16!
I mean, look what's happened in the gap between shows! (It was $10 brand new, so I wasn't able to resist checking if there was time for KLAX!)

For the main course, I took a few photos of the new ROM book.
No one in this thread, of all places, should go without. It is excellent!

The cover is pure class, a great signal to what's to come.

All the schematics and reference materials included are just amazing. There's so much that I'd never seen before!

Even logo artwork gets a couple of pages of appreciation.

There's a great amount of artwork sourced from the real paintings, free of logos and everything else.
Again, lots of it I'd never seen whole before like this!

Sonic's infamous human girlfriend. Great follow-up to having read the backstory in Console Wars!

Among a number of design docs, there are storyboards also!

They've included lots of sprite sheets dedicated to characters and background art.

Lots of fantastic interviews in the final section! I haven't finished them all yet.

That book is truly great.

And I'm SO close to finishing the next episode of Generation 16! Extra hours at work lately have slowed the process a bit, but I'm currently down to two segments left to edit before putting the whole thing together and uploading.

10k yencoins shipped from Hobby Link Japan, so almost $90.

I think Ami Ami had it cheaper even, but they always have low stock and I missed out.

That's Landstalker taken care of. Those last two dungeons are a bummer and I resorted to using a guide. In fact, quality takes a nosedive already when you're wrapping up Mercator. I still love the first half of the game though.

I'd like to do the Sonic series next, but Sonic & Knuckles seems lost in the mail. Along with Phantasy Star 4 that's in the same parcel. It's been over two weeks now. Even more of a bummer.

Rocket Knight Adventures maybe? I bought it only because it's been mentioned a bunch in this thread. I have no idea what I'd be getting into. Well, except good music!

RKA is da bomb for real tho.

Thats a 10top videogame right there.

Was just playing Landstalker last night, actually.

It's pretty fun. Controls kinda stiffly, considering you can only move on diagonals. Also looks dreadful over RF, but given the circumstances I was playing it in (was at my parents' house, so I was using my old Model 2 Genesis from when I was, like, 5-6, connected to an old 720p HDTV over RF, instead of the HDG Model 1 connected to an XRGB over SCART), couldn't be helped. Did play much nicer with the six-button pad I'd picked up a few months ago than the three-button pads I'd otherwise been using, at least! I mean, Landstalker isn't a six-button game, but the less-stiff D-Pad makes the controls more bearable.

RKA sounds promising! I'll dig in tomorrow.

Oh yes, absolutely. I received my first 6 button pad in the middle of my playthrough and I couldn't believe the difference it made in nailing those jumps, or even just walking through a room exit without first grinding against a wall for a bit.

The most annoying part for me was the town where you have to talk to EVERYONE before you can get into the castle (forgot the towns name.) was stuck there for a while.

Landstalker is awesome though - having grown up with the insanely difficult isometric games on the Speccy/C64, it was nice to play through something that didnt require a stack of graph paper to complete.

I'm very much looking forward to it!
Thanks for putting so much work towards building these, they are a joy to watch. :D

Fantastic pick up! Can I dream of a working model modded with a Mega Drive-on-a-chip?
The Playstation Optimus Prime looks great, too, but clearly Megatron came out on top here.

You've made a fine choice this day. Easily one of the best games the Genesis has to offer.

RKA is top 5 on the platform for me, it made a huge impression on me back in the day!
I agree that it doesn't get nearly enough credit. I'd say just the soundtrack and sprite work alone should garner it a lot more praise.

This reminds me again to look into the sequel...

I really wanted to like Landstalker, but i just can't. The isometric style of game just annoys me to no end, and that game can be pretty grindy for an action-RPG. Great music though.

That's a hideous Mega Drive. I've always wanted to know what a Saturn white one would look like though.

I remember grinding a ton as a kid, but I made a decision to not do any grinding whatsoever this time around, and it worked out fine. The isometric platforming, though, that takes some getting used to.

So I found an excellent deal on Craigslist for a Sega Genesis package. I offered $60 and the guy accepted. I had a Genesis when it first launched and soon sold it for a TurboGrafx-16. I felt like a complete dolt about that later.

High Definition Graphics! (It's the TMSS version if anyone is wondering)

I want the Genesis version of Mercs even though I own the arcade version in Capcom Classics Volume 1 for it's exclusive features.
