Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

It was bad back in the day but worse now. They haven't exactly improved with time and no one is making new screens. The stupid system doesn't put out a signal compatible with modern LCDs, which is why the mod is so expensive. I almost wouldn't mind tricking one out with a modern LCD and RGB out, but I need to have a lot of cash burning a hole in my pocket before that happens.

^pretty much that, yeah. i wish porting to the SMS was easier, but alas.

there's a few games ill stand by & a short list of ones i still wanna play though (Shinobis, Quest for the Shaven Yak etc)

AlteredBeast

Fork 'em, Sparky!
Shinobi for GG II: The Silent Fury is one of my favorite games ever. Never forget playing it all week on a family road trip once, I even plugged straight into the outlet so I could continue to play in the hotel at night. Everyone should play it once.

There were maybe like 5 to 10 GG exclusives (that didn't have SMS versions) that I wanted to get around to trying eventually, but my childhood Game Gear went dead a long time ago, possibly due to bad capacitors. It's never really been a priority to find a replacement.

That's right. It's one of the systems that ages poorly due to poor bad capacitors.

Is this the list of those?

So I finally got around to starting Shining in the Darkness today, and I'm loving it so far! The art style is absolutely charming, from the characters in town to the monsters you fight (over and over again). I've all but completed the first level of the dungeon and the novelty of mapping my progress hasn't worn off yet...

I'm guessing that once I get to the second level of the Labyrinth, I'll meet at least one of my two eventual companions, who have been mentioned in the Tavern, but have yet to show up.

One thing I loved was the appearance of the first boss: instead of simply appearing like all the other random battles, he instead slinked onto the screen from a passageway. This special entrance is great because it really lets you know "This is not your typical enemy"...

He absolutely rocked me the first time, but a few levels and some upgraded armor later, I got my revenge.

Is the story in Shining in the Darkness pretty important, or is it pretty much just a set up, dungeons, then the climax? I'm thinking about tackling it at the same time as my next RPG after I beat Breath of Fire.

Beat Adventures of Batman and Robin again. This time I only died once. And killed Mad Hatter super quick.

I said it before but damn is this game underrated.

I pulled the screen out of one and threw the board in a radio shack project box with one of Tim Worthington's rgb boards in it. Wired it up with a genesis 2 power jack, rgb port, and genesis controller port. I also just threw my everdrive in there and closed it up. So its like a console that I barely ever touch, lol.

I was absolutely crazy about this game back in the day. I have to go back and play it again sometime soon.

Once you're in past the first hour or so when you've gotten your two other party members, the story falls away as it's just, as you say, a setup for the scenario. Nothing substantial outside of combat and mazes in the same location that goes deeper and deeper down. Still a worthwhile dungeon crawl. You should be fine with running alongside a deeper, more developed story-based RPG. If you've played Shining the Holy Ark, it's spiritual successor on the Saturn, this will feel much simpler and much shorter.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Went to a swap meet at Digital Press in NJ and scored myself SOR 1, 2 (I owned loose, but wanted the box and manual), and Castle of Illusion CIB, for a total of $20.

Now if I can only find a quality CIB Air Buster for a reasonable price I'll be in business!

I still can't believe some of the stuff they pulled off in that game. That game just runs flawlessly, the music is amazing, and the run-and-gun gameplay is super tight.

I gotta go back to making a serious attempt at this game. Green bolos the way to go?

The flying stage totally kills my enthusiasm, though, it drags like crazy.

.

All the way. Fully powered up Green Bolo's annihilate most enemies. I killed Mad Hatter (easily the hardest boss in the game) before I even got to the mid way point of the fight where you have to dodge those walls.

The Shmup stage drags but it's not too bad. It goes on for about 15 minutes.

Interesting. Not sure if i like it tho.

Mega Drive/Genesis controllers are region free, right? A Pal 6 button controller should work on a Genesis?

It's not my screens so I couldn't say how it looks in motion.

I wonder if Adventures of Batman & Robin is actually free. Jesper Kyd actually had the ROM up for download on his website around the mid 00's. At any rate I do have the original cartridge complete with box and manual.
This is another game that is heavily dithered so I wonder how it would look like processed through that filter.

I think it has a problem with mistakenly blending very thin (ie 1 pixel wide) outlines/shadows and highlights, making them respectively brighter and darker than intended. You can see it on the fourth weapon icon where the white pixels turn gray.

So this turned up today...

Got it for £20 delivered, instructions could be in better condition but seems a steal considering complete copies go for a hell of a lot more when they surface. Im a bit disappointed though as i though it was the same as the SNES version but its a completely different game

Any screenshots of Vectorman with that filter? I imagine it would benefit that game the most.

You could just download RetroArch and try it for yourself I guess. I am so damn out of the loop on these things I actually thought RetroArch was another product like the Framemeister. Only just now discovered it's a multiplatform software emulator.

Where'd you find those shots? I have RetroArch but don't really know how to get that shader (or option, whatever it is) set up.

The shader is called gadapt and is in the dithering folder in your shaders folder if you have a nightly build of RetroArch (or download the full set of official shaders here). There's a thread with screenshot comparisons of the shader here. Libretro recently migrated to a new forum; that's a read only copy of the old one.

I just downloaded it myself but the whole thing is really daunting and different from the usual type of emulation software. No idea how to properly configure and set things up.

Yeah, it's a bit too much work for just playing games on an emulator, to be honest. That said, it's a fucking godsend on Android.

Alien Storm is good but it never reaches the epic-nes of Golden Axe. Golden Axe feels like a Conan the Barbarian picture for obvious reasons. It just feels like a classic pulp adventure and has a lot of great moments and never out stays its welcome. The controls are a tad stiff but I would compare them to the NES Castlevania games in a good way.

The really cool part about Alien Storm is that it doesn't have that variety problem that a lot of other beat 'em ups have.

that's one of my favorite parts, yeah!

i mean crossover characters/formula aside, they're quite different in the same way Golden Axe differs from most beat-em-ups (at least before 3...), in that deliberately slower pacing. it fits the tone/theme i feel but it's very much a core concept - i wouldn't want to slow Alien Storm down anymore than i'd want an SOR-paced Axe game. you fuck with the game's identity that way, you know?
