Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Golden Axe is closer to Double Dragon (especially 3 on the NES) where it's not about mob control like in other Beat 'em Ups because you only fight 2-4 enemies max at a time. It's about learning the A.I. pattern of the enemies and figuring out the best way of taking them out.

The pits are your friend. Lure enemies to do that dash attack and let them fall to their death. Or lure them near the pits and knock them off. REALLY comes in handy in the final level.

I swear the MD version was arcade perfect back in the day...its not until i played that arcade game on MAME and realised that its not at all arcade perfect but it did have 2 extra stages in its favour

Alien Storm is good but it never reaches the epic-nes of Golden Axe. Golden Axe feels like a Conan the Barbarian picture for obvious reasons. It just feels like a classic pulp adventure and has a lot of great moments and never out stays its welcome. The controls are a tad stiff but I would compare them to the NES Castlevania games in a good way.
Is it true the voice sampls are form Conan?

I knocked up a guide on setting up retroarch about 6 months old, i keep mean to redo another video which is a bit more professional, or though somethings have change this should still get you going........

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHXyGK9DNX4

The problem I had was, it wasn't obvious where to get the cores, even on the retroarch website. But after figuring that out, it's pretty easy. It doesn't seem to load my config automatically when I load up retroarch, that caught me out a TON when I was trying to get things working. Having to load a config manually is just ...

Unless there is a way for it to, but I was rebinding my controls every time I loaded Retroarch because of that. Ugh.

I think I'm using it wrong.

you're absolutely right & i do dig them for that (eat it, skellies) but man i hate insta-dying when i fuck up the crossing
like that one swamp bridge in the arcade Double Dragon, as a kid i must've lost some good $ on that shit, everytime

Yeah i believe that you either have to load the save config each time or just select that core and all the settings should load including the button configs.

The nightly builds can be found here...

http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/win-x86_64/

make sure to get the latest retroarch, core and redist zip files

Man I love Super Monaco GP. Been playing the Sega CD version. Went right after Tyrant, then Firenze and now I have the Madonna teams car. Think I may have went for Blanche as well but I can't remember off the top of my head. The minor tweaks are a nice addition as well. I know for sure the voice work is cleaner on the Sega CD.

Thanks, I didn't realise in your youtube description that you linked to not just the Nightly Builds, but all the other bits :) I had grabbed retroarch from the website before hand, so I ignored the link. Great video by the way!

I started playing Sonic CD again for the first time in many, many years.

The Palmtree Panic Past music is out of tune.

Childhood ruined.

Skeletons are by far the most annoying to fight.

That's pretty much the best way to kill those skeletons.

I thought Brutal was the worst fighting game for the Genesis

Slaughter Sport may have just changed my thoughts on that.
Slaughter Sport is nearly unplayable!!!

Aw, man, the presentation in Brutal on Sega CD is really well done but the game plays like such a nasty turd.

It's going to be tough deciding what to do with this one.

Wow, I'm perusing eBay and it's making me pretty God damn happy that I got Hard Corps CIB for 25 bucks while the getting was good.

Pretty fucked if I ever want a copy of Gunstar Heroes, though.

Gotta side with Alien Storm.

Way more varied than Golden Axe and the fighting is more fun.

Eh, it doesn't really do a lot about the dithering on the ground. For some reason it only concentrates on the girl.

I've always been a fan of dithering patterns, though. No filters for me.

Had a no-death run with Adventures of Batman and Robin. I was tempted to upload an LP but I see someone already did that.

Damn dude, that's really good. Only did that one try so far, the length of these stages really wears me down.

SMS Shinobi is cool, but I can't shit on Double Dragon enough.

Shinobi III is like, greatest game ever territory, but that Valis III looks bootleg as fuck to me.

Yeah I think it's bootleg too, but it was dirt-cheap so I figured why not. I dunno, I never played DD on Master System before and from looking at videos It looks better than most ports tbh.

Jesus, that game is pretty common I thought.

ULTRA RARE NOW

...goddammit
so of course that was one of the few that the label had to tear during the great cart/sticker cleaning of '14

guess i'll make peace with it, was hoping to find a manual one day too

That M2 Treasure compilation on PS2 is lookin' like a mighty good value right now

I mean, it always was, but yeah

oh yeah, this is high on my list too, great collection

Just picked these up.

great haul, man!

US version is more expensive complete in box, like 70+ bucks.

The real bummer for me is that it's a game that I definitely enjoy, but not one of those must-haves (I prefer Hard Corps by quite a bit), so unless I get very lucky, I'm stuck with the digital versions of it.
