New Toejam and Earl game announced on Facebook

Greetings from Funkotron! We haven't been posting as often lately because we've gotten really busy with the new TJ&E game. We will be making some announcements in a probably 3 or 4 weeks, when we have something we can show, and will be able to share lots of information with you.

between this & Wonder Boy, 2015 is off to a fine start

Let me cross-post my thoughts on the art style here:

I'm initially thrilled, but if it just jacks the Doki Doki Universe art style as the concept art seems to suggest, I'm going to be bummed. Toejam is gangly, but not a straight-up beanpole.

Shit, the more I think about it, the more I'm worried about the potential aesthetic. TJ&E represents a very specific hip-hop/funk style from the early 90s that hasn't really been romanticized by games in the same way other aspects of the culture of the late 80s/early 90s has. TJ&E looks like the product of someone who not only played a bunch of Rogue, but also listened to a lot of Parliament and early Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and watched a lot of In Living Color. Hell, most of the series' UI looks like scrapped De La Soul album art.

Don't get me wrong, they pretty much already fucked it up before with the Xbox game, but I would love for them to revisit the style of the first two games. The funk didn't just come through in the music, after all.

ah, missed that thread entirely!

There's also the Pier Solar and the Great Architects reprint which is currently expected near the end of this month iirc.

yeah, i think ive had my preorder for a year or two now, really not holding my breath
Project Y should be renamed Detox at this point

One of my favorite Genesis games, Toejam and Earl, and I realize how lacking my collection is, without it.

.. But I'm actually tempted to go for the Japanese version, considering it's half the going price, and the case/manual art is arguably livelier than the US version.

Game's all in English apparently.

Megadrive pick ups from the last 2 weeks, had a bulk buy on 30 games that i got for a steal which had some gems and some individual picks........

And the chuff from the bulk buy which ill sell on...

Does anyone else go ape with anti bacterial wipe on there games when they get them??

I clean them inside and out, I'll even clean the contacts before I use them. Goo gone the box and remove all sticker residue, this drives me nuts. I also do the same with any console I get but I'll take that apart and clean it. Found a leaf and hair inside an SNES before.

Everything new that comes in is put aside for processing. Once all stickers have been removed and it's been cleaned it gets put on the shelf.

Doesn't lighter fluid (and other types of petro-chemicals) leave residues behind?

Personally, I use DeoxIT to completely clean, and deoxidize the contacts on my cartridges, and consoles. As for the exterior, I'm not so anal about it, but have some games that I would like to clean up. I've used Goof Off on some CD cases, and it seemed to make the clear case cloudy. What do you recommend to remove stickers from cases, and from CDs/DVDs? I haven't really tried as I've heard horror stories of people damaging the data layer with cleaners/solvents.

Yes, why I also then clean that off afterwards. The lighter fluid is for getting rid of stuck/sticky stuff. Can use any number of things for that but lighter fluid is just something I have always had around the house and have used forever to do it.

1) Can anyone recommend a quality maker of reproduction carts? I only really need someone who can reprogram the board itself and replace a battery; I don't need full label art or cases or anything for the time being.

2) Anyone have any tips on how to open and then put together a JP Mega Drive cartridge without fucking up the case or the label art?

You need to use a hair dryer to warm the glue and gently peel the label off. It should come off almost on its own. I suggest you start from the top and in a damp environment (like your bathroom after a shower) so you don't get dust to stick to the glue and make nasty bumps once you stick it back.

Is it feasible to open the cartridge without removing the label? Just enough to pry it open from the bottom and pull out the PCB? Reapplying the label after the fact doesn't sound appealing.

Finished off the Adventures of Batman and Robin on my third attempt since coming back to it. Hatter is the hump, got through Freeze first try. Great game.

I think Mr. Freeze went to jail for using emulators.

Just beat Comix Zone with the bad ending by letting the girl drown then went through it again to get the good ending.

I don't think I'd beaten it before, the last part was all new to me and awesome. My backloggery is full of lies I guess.

Comix Zone was a hard game for me as a kid. I never beat it at all when I was little.

I keep some 99% around for cleaning internal components and what not so will try that next time I need to get some sticky off.

Got back from a good sized craigslist meet. Got a 32x along with CIB metalhead and virtua racing for $35. Had no idea the genesis/32x could do 3d. Really cool.

the haul showing the 32x + games

So question, it didn't come with the little loop brace thing and I was wondering if I could find that for cheap online? Had no idea what to call it and wasn't getting good hits in google.

Nice haul, I'm very jealous. I've been wanting a 32X (and Virtual Boy) for a long while now. Do you need one of these cables?

Edit: I found that this website is very helpful when trying to get a Genesis/Mega Drive hooked up to its crazy add-ons. Some more options as to wiring.

the cable that connects between the 32x and MD or the metal shielding brace?

The shield brace? Its like a spacer that you can remove. I had a broken 32x before that had it and I figure it's only used for the model 2. Don't have a model 1 to compare. I've got the cables + model 1 adapter. Just tried out metal head and I'm surprised how good it looks for such an old system/game.

edit: I found it on ebay. $11 hmm, might just wait for a better deal as I don't "need" it.

Are you talking about the plastic spacer that came with the 32X that looks like this:

If so, you only need that if you are using a model 2 Genesis/Mega Drive, it's not needed with a model 1.

Yeah, although I can play fine without it, so I'll wait until I can find it for like $5 or so.

Do people actually LIKE Popful Mail? I just started playing this game and it is fucking horrible. The "difficulty" is ridiculous. They just damage sponge enemies while giving your character like no defense.

Yes, yes people do. I love side scrolling adventure games like it, just wish it's price hadn't doubled over the past year so I can get a copy of it again.

I hear you on the difficulty though. Think that may have been a WD change to the game but not sure.

Its just fucking terrible. It isn't that the game is hard but that the enemies (especially the bosses) are bullet sponges. If that was fixed it could be a decent game.

damn, is Popful that mean? that's one of the few that stayed under my radar & shot up way too fast for me to actually grab a valid cop

Speaking of Toejam and Earl, it reminded me of this old poster I have. No idea where I got it from - possibly from a game box.

damn, never seen that one! sonic, headdy & crew...nice

And you'll quickly realise after upgrading your gear that you are on a treadmill. You make the same percentage of damage with new gear on new enemies than with old gear and old enemies. This part frustrated me. But otherwise it's still a good action platforming game with challenging bosses and a stupid story. I liked it.

After I got my PAL MD for Christmas 1990 I borrowed Atomic Robo-Kid off of a friends brother who had a JP import console. Of course it didn't fit, so I proceeded to puncture the label to unscrew it so that I could insert the PCB. Fortunately he didn't notice when I returned it, but I felt a bit guilty, so when I borrowed ESWAT off of him I cut off the corners of the cartridge slot with a hot knife and a couple of bits of card to hold open the slot. I didn't consider using a hair dryer at the time, but it wouldn't have been very convenient anyway.

Luckily the console outlasted the warranty, although about 3 years later it developed a serious malfunction where games wouldn't load and it would only display weird colours, probably a problem with the VDP. I took it to an import shop who sent it off for repair, but it came back a couple of months later with them saying that they couldn't repair it. It then suddenly started working again, so I quickly sold it whilst it was still working. I never had any comeback, so I guess it must have continued to work for a while.

That import shop was pretty cool, they had a hacked pirate Street Fighter II coin op with lots of crazy moves. I spent a lot of time on that. Capcom even incorporated some of them into Turbo Hyper Fighting.

I think the boss battles could be rather dumb but I liked it otherwise. Eventually you'll be able to upgrade Mail's weapon so that it's a ranged attack, that helps with the sponginess.
