Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I don't understand their music choice. Why distinctly Asian sounding music over footage of Little Italy?

I have no idea myself. I think this is probably the same channel I heard Parasite Eve music during an advertisement for some sort of soap opera.

Honestly, Revenge is clunky and just aged poorly, while Shinobi III is still awesome today. I see no reason to revisit Revenge whatsoever, myself.

I didn't do a complete playthrough of either until 2011 or 2012, but I found Revenge to have much tighter stages and was far more challenging overall. I prefer it. The aesthetics in III are better and the movelist is an awful lot of fun, but even on its hardest the game doesn't provide the same level of tension that Revenge does.

If only I could combine the two!

i mean, they feel like almost a gen apart - III flows better & oozes polish, but Revenge is a classic that it's strange to see described as clunky, for me.

Having played Shinobi 3 first makes it really, really hard to play the earlier games in the series. I really want to check out the PS2 and 3DS Shinobi games.

I'm liking all this Shinobi talk, I quite like this franchise and I need to do the honor of beating those Genesis Shinobi games on the hardest settings.

Shinobi III is probably the best of the series in terms of quality, but I have a soft spot for the dark horse that is Shadow Dancer. Love the more arcadey gameplay and graphics, and love the dog, I wish it would come back in another Shinobi title.

Shadow Dancer has a dog ally. Dog allies in games are automatically awesome.

That's the crazy thing about dogs in games. Everytime my ally is a dog, I freaking love it. Whenever the dog is an enemy, I freaking hate it.

i never get why series like Castlevania, Mario etc are recognized as having splintered by fans, but not Shinobi - OG/arcade Shinobi and its true sequel, Shadow Dancer, are one line, while Revenge/III/Legions etc are clearly another, i thought

Because OG Shinobi is more of a Run 'N Gun title. Only you're chucking Kunai's instead of using an actual gun. But Shinobi 3 was designed more around not using the Kunai and gave you the option of melee or dive kicking everything. You could still call Shinobi 3 a Run 'N Gun but it certainly feels different when compared to the earlier games. By the time the Saturn title came, the whole Run 'N Gun aspect was dropped and you had to melee everything.

I decided to play through the games on my Everdrive alphabetically. So far:

688 Attack sub is unplayable

3 ninjas Kick back is better than expected

Ahhh real monsters is garbage

AA Harimanda is fucking great!!! Sumo Wrestling Street Fighter with throws and shit.

You guys should check this game out it's really a lot of fun.

Aaahh!!! Real Garbage

I looked up the correct number of letters and exclamation points.

I want to try Legions so bad!!!

You should because it is hilarious and actually pretty good.

It used to be dirt cheap, too. I guess it is not anymore =/

That harimanda yokozuna game is probably actually garbage too but i had no idea what to expect when i started it and was having a lot of fun with it. I like that you can do street fighter style jumping moves and reversals and throw the opponent.

So I ran though Sonic 1 today:

Forgive the banding, it actually looks phenomenal in person!

Got all the Chaos Emeralds before beating it too, which may be a first for me when actually playing on the Genesis proper. I did have to use a continue though, I forgot you don't actually have to "defeat" Robotnik at the end of Labyrinth Zone, instead you just have to survive his gauntlet.

I also forgot how tough Scrap Brain zone is, there's a lot of things that can kill you VERY quick in those levels. Of course, the most dangerous enemy in the whole game is the lack of floor in some zones. Also, speaking of Scrap Brain, when I was a kid I always saw a face in the background:

Do you see it there, to the left of Sonic? You'll always see it now, sorry everyone.

I wonder if that face was on purpose all alone?

I played through and beat the Steam version of Sonic CD today, after not touching the game for what is probably well over a decade by now.

The level design definitely does not hold up as well as I remember it. I didn't mind Wacky Workbench that much, but getting stuck in Metallic Madness' weird layout really frustrated me. I still love the time traveling concept and I especially like that each zone has its own special mechanical gimmick like the shrink ray. Just needed better execution is all. Funny thing I noticed that the vocals were missing from the JP/EU credits music. Is it yet another case of licensing issue? Anyways I wouldn't have minded the lack of cheesy engrish vocals that much, if it wasn't replaced by this really abrasive synth brass sound and laughable guitar sample.

And here's another funny thing. I always had this feeling that the US soundtrack was rushed. A couple of years ago I got the software version of the Korg Wavestation, which was a common vector synth back in the early 90's. There's this prefab sequence/loop sound I found on it which sounded awfully familiar. It turns out that practically all of US Metallic Madness was created by just playing this sequence at different keys. Guess that pretty much confirms that zone music was phoned in. I recall reading that the decision to change the music for the US release was made very late and he had very little time to finish it.

Isnt he Gecko Yamori, guy who made kick ass tunes back in the day?

That's me.

688 Attack sub is still one of my favorite 16-bit games as I'm a total sub nut. Silent Service for the NES is pretty great, too. The thing about 688 Attack Sub is that I borrowed it from one of my friends when it came out, but no one knew how to play: we never had the manual, my friend didn't know a thing about the game (it belonged to his father,) and there was no internet back then. I just played, and figured everything out. I have my own copy now, and still play it every now and then.

As for Shinobi, I've never spent more than ten minutes with any of them, just not my style. Always found ninjas, and the such kind of lame.

There's actually a hidden monitor box in the wall there, directly below you. It was most likely a left over from the object placement phase of level design. You can break it by jumping at the left side of the wall. It isn't hard to do, but there is a bit of a trick to hitting it. Once you do, a small pink icon pops up from underneath the floor. It doesn't do anything, but it's interesting nonetheless. :)

Edit: Actually, it might not be that specific location. I don't remember the moving platform being there. It's an area with a big pit below you, and three / four electricity beacon things sitting inside it.

The stages are much tighter and as a result more focused. Don't get me wrong, Shinobi III is a great game but it doesn't keep you on your toes as much as Revenge does.

Oh, and Yuzo Koshiro.

Revenge requires you to adhere to a certain technique as you play. Whereas SIII frees you up to make your own techniques as the gameplay has more options.

Nothing wrong with either style, imo. Definitely a big 1980s and 1990s arcade style vibe to their differences, with SIII adopting a fighting game design where you are rewarded for creative gameplay.

Did Sonic 1 ever get a cart update to include the Japanese version changes?

The more parallax layers and water effects? I know the game was reprinted several times on the Genesis as it was a popular pack in and evergreen game.

I've been wondering the same thing, actually.

Started playing Tiny Toons: Buster's Hidden Treasure on krejlooc's recommendation. Had a copy forever, but never made the time before. The automatic fast fall/dive kick upon letting go of the jump button makes the game feel fairly different from other platformers of the era. Got up to what I think is the last stage after 2 sittings and Elmira destroyed me.

I'm typically against end bosses in an otherwise uniform game that require skills the player hasn't been honing throughout the game and running away from her is such a fight. The worse part is that continuing makes you have to complete 3 stages prior, which aren't all that difficult and mostly just serve as a penalty for not finishing the first time. My next go at it might just be spending some time mining lives in the stage before that fight so that I can get a lot more consecutive tries at beating her and wrapping it up. Not bad at all for a licensed platformer...

That's me.

Those were indeed kick ass tunes.

I don't believe that any sonic 1 version outside of japan had the extra paralax features, years back I actually bought a japanese cart just to own it as S1 is my favourate of the 4 main games on megadrive, saying that it was my first ever ebay buy.

Yeah, I just popped this in a few days ago myself. It's a gorgeous game.

The amount of control you have over the length of your jump is crazy. If you barely tap the button he will hop for less than a pixel, basically just make the jump and then landing noise and barely moving, and like you said as soon as you let go of the button he goes down like a rock.

It's a legit platformer, I'm really enjoying it. Only just rescued Calamity, though, but I took a pic of the password for later. Password games got a bit better with smart phones.

Road Rash is one of the few games that I simultaneously loved but more or less refused to complete legitimately.

That game was padded for length in the worst way. Replay the same 5 courses over and over, but just tack on an extra 2.5 miles to the track each time. No real ending either, IIRC.

Just got...

Turrican
Desert Strike
Mega Swiv
Quackshot
Altered Beast
Golden Axe

all boxed with instructions for £50.50 delivered, not bad for an evening on ebay considering Turrican usually goes for around £28 usually on its own.

Damn im going deep on my MD collection these last few weeks, or though ive been cautious and not bidded stupidly on auctions (the most i spent was £33 for Gunstar Heroes) im still worried how much ive actually spent

Ugh, I totally forgot my Hyperstone Heist had a BB sticker on the label that ripped off a strip along the top. Always meant to replace it and put it off, and now it's expensive.

Box and manual are mint, though.

Ugh.
