I want to expand my classic PS collection, I already owned PSII and now III, but damn PSI and IV are getting damn expensive.

Nice. I have Phantasy Star II CIB with the hint book and Phantasy Star IV CIB but don't yet have Phantasy Star III since I heard it was the weakest entry on the system. I've also seen it CIB for like 20 bucks.

Trying to remember retail prices of the main Phantasy Star games in the U.S.

(1995) IV was

(1991) III was probably $80

(1990) II was $80

(1988) PSI I believe was $70 (Master System)

Worth every penny though. Except maybe III. Even then though, i still think III is good.

Where I'm at I'm seeing €60,- and higher. I'm gonna hit some more retro-conventions (mostly resellers though, so deals are rare) this year, so I'll try and talk the price down, maybe even get PSIV at the same time to drive it down a bit further.

Finally got a copy of Arcus Odyssey. A friend of mine was at a local game store and saw it cart only for $20.. there was one with box, but they were asking $80.

So I'm gonna toss this out here first, before I put it up on eBay or in the sales thread.

I've got a Model 1 Genesis, VA6. It has the EXT port. It's in good shape, but has the usual slight scuffing on the top that nearly every damned Genesis seems to have. Better than most, but not pristine. All aspects of it are in clean and working order. The sound is excellent. Comes with a controller that has the red buttons, accurate to what this system would have included at the time. AC adapter is there too, of course, and is original Sega brand.

Included with it, I've got a Sega CD Model II expansion plate in perfect condition. This is the little plastic wedge that makes a Model I not look stupid on a Model II Sega CD. It has the metal plate that connects it, and both associated screws to connect everything securely. I've seen the plastic piece alone go for like $20 on eBay, and that's a stupid price without the metal plate / screws.

I have an RF connector that nobody will want, but I'm also going to include a RGB JP21 cable that includes the 1/8" headphone adapter. This passes actual stereo to your XRGB Mini, or whatever you're using with SCART. Just be aware that it is in fact the Japanese version of the cable, and not the Euro. It'll work natively with the XRGB Mini and the adapter it comes with.

I'm up for trades, and I'll put pictures in this post tonight. PC Engine trades are of the most interest to me. PayPal's okay too, though, and I'll cut a very good deal on it with the folks here.

I finally received my copy of Pier Solar. It came with two postcards, even though the invoice says 2postc & 1fig. I won't even try to complain.

I played for a few minutes with and without the CD soundtrack, I must say it's quite a nice addition! It's a bit like playing with a Soundblaster then a Roland MT-32. I knew I wouldn't get redbook audio, I'm assuming the CD allows the game to use the audio capabilities of the Mega-CD.

So glad I got these games a while ago before the prices exploded.

What other Genesis-games are going upwards in price? Want to grab the important ones before they get too expensive.

Hyperstone Heist

well, almost every Konami game except Rocket Knight Adventures

but to be honest, the ship has probably sailed on those already

I really wonder where the ceiling is on Hyperstone. It seems like Turtles in Time (SNES I know) is on an upward move too, but it still isn't anywhere near Hyperstone.

Sooo... It seems all the Super Fighter Team games are back in production.

As much as I'd love to get them all, I can't really justify spending $340 total at once (without the SNES game! that would make it $425). If they had a progressive release, like one per month, I'd have been much more tempted to get most of them.

I'm thinking of getting Beggar Prince, because it was the first, and maybe Star Odysse because I like the theme. I just tried Magic Girl and, while it's a cute game, I can't really see myself paying full price for a barely average shmup.

Is it worth getting Hyperstone Heist when you have Turtles in Time? I thought it was basically the same game. I think I have most of the other Konami-games, well except Sparkster, need to get that.

Hyperstone is like a remix of Turtles in Time with some original content. It's not the same. I think a couple bosses are from Manhattan Project and The Arcade Game.

Turtles in Time might have better levels and graphics, but I personally prefer the way Hyperstone Heist plays. You get additional frames of animations on the turtles which makes a big difference imo. Plus run is on a button, so it's significantly easier and faster to pull off some of the more complex moves.

The bosses all have like, the same Leatherhead AI of moving vertically while throwing something then charging across the screen. They're either taken right from TiT or are lame as hell.

The combat is fun, yeah. It's not a bad game but it's certainly no Hard Corps, Bloodlines or godly Rocket Knight.

Does he move vertically as he throws projectiles and then run across the screen?

Just watched a video because I realized I have like no memory of the game almost at all. He doesn't do that but the fight is still pretty lame.

He moves vertically and shoots projectiles yes.
He jumps across the screen and shoots projectiles below him.
And then there's also the constantly respawning foot soldiers to deal with.

He does more than most bosses in turtle games.

I feel the same way, especially since "Legend of Wukong" and "Star Odyssey" don't ship until 2017!

They apparently also offer a download version of the RPGs for PC:

I think it's more of a question of "How much do you love Turtles in Time?"

If the answer is "I love it so god damned much!" then you should probably get Hyperstone Heist. It plays slightly better with the run button, and it's different enough to Turtles in Time to demand the attention of real fans. I could play them back to back without getting bored or feeling as if the game was simply repeating itself.

If you casually like Turtles in Time, it's more of the same and the scope / scale of the levels just isn't as varied. If it was $40 or under, I'd classify it as a "Must Buy" but it isn't... it's climbing in price like crazy.

Ok, thanks for all the answers! Still not sure what I will do, but I do love Turtles in Time, so it might be worth it. 40$ is nothing compared to a lot of other games I own lol :)

Oh yeah then go for it. If you've never played it before, it's like a chunk of childhood (or adulthood? Whatever you were in the early 90s) that you missed out on. People complain that it's "just more of Turtles in Time," but I can't think of many things I don't think I'd get sick of having more of.

Be prepared though, it seems like 90% of the copies out there are rentals, and suitably destroyed.

And yet he's still simple to beat thanks to the fact you simply need to get behind him and whack away at him as he can't do much to you at all with his arrows since you can also deflect them.

Honestly Slash from TiT on SNES is a better boss.

Anyone have a recommendation for control pad extensions?

Not a random DB9 extension cable, the large plug with screws won't fit into the console. I made this mistake.
Any Atari extension cable should work. The plug and wiring are standard, it's just a matter of finding a plug that fit.

Yeah, I think I might just get the japanese version though, hope my luck will be a bit better with those.

Not sure why anyone would recommend skipping Hyperstone Heist. Whether you think it's better or worse than Turtles in Time, it's still really good and it's a different game.

Just bought a model 1 Genesis on ebay. It's coming with a 3 button controller and RF (yuck). I'm going to have to mod it for s-video. A couple questions:

  1. Is the 6-button controller worth having? I have zero interest in fighting games FWIW. I had one of these controllers as a kid but I don't remember anything about it.
  2. Are there any JP only Mega Drive games worth owning? I'm thinking about widening the cartridge slot but since it turned out not so great for my Super Famicom I'd rather not unless there are games that make it worth it.

The 6-button controller is worth it for Ranger X!

6-button is worth it for Ranger-X as Morfeo says, and it's really a better controller than the standard 3-button, in my opinion. Much better d-pad.

There are a lot of non-fighting games that support the controller.

Plus it has just about the best d-pad ever made. A lot of people say that the JPN/Model2 Saturn d-pad is the best but the differences are very minor. The actual pad itself is the exact same part, there are just minor differences int the rocking mechanism.

Absolutely worth owning imo.
