Anime was just too taboo at the time.

True. I'm not crazy about the Megadrive version either, though. So much poutyface.

BattleMania_MD_JP_Box.jpg

A site I was reading about the game mentioned that the goofiness of the Japanese version was actually toned down. How crazy is that? It's the opposite of anything else ever.

Finally, I got the best ending of Contra Hard Corps after all these years...I used Ray this time...yeah it's gonna take a while to no death this game compared to the 1st 3 Contra games, lol. Thankfully I didn't have too much trouble at all with the final boss.

Stage 2 is even longer, the flying section goes on forever. The hardest part of the game is the mad hatter level, if you pass that then you're good. Also stay away from the blue power up, it's no good.

Batman & Robin practically shoves health pickups in your face throughout the levels so I find it fairly forgiving compared to other games. I have a harder time staying alive in Gunstar Heroes.

I also use the flying kick as a defacto double jump to help avoid projectiles. Not many others seem to use it that way from what I've seen.

I don't have issues clearing Stage 1 of Gunstar Heroes without getting a Game Over, though. I can't even beat Harley as-yet, and she's only the boss of the first part of Adventures of Batman and Robin's first level.

It sucks. I tried to record a No-Death run on Adventures of Batman and Robin and I managed to pull it off but the recording cut off at the Shmup section... Every time I try again I always die once in the Mad Hatter level.

Yeah I hate the blue powerup, I forgot what it does until I picked it up and decided not to use it anymore, lol.

Yeah that's what I actually do all the time to stay alive and it's really helpful.

Really? I beaten her each time after a few tries.

Oh wow, that's insane.

Yeah, I haven't gotten past the Mad Hatter level in Adventures of Batman & Robin either.

And in the Sega CD game, it's the Riddler's cyber-world level that almost always ends my game... that level is crazy-hard! I may have gotten past it once, but not often.

Despite how hard they are though, both games are among the best on their respective platforms for sure.

Yeah that Alex dude mentioned beating the Genesis Adventures of Batman and Robin a few months ago. Inspired me to make some serious runs even though the length of that batplane stage bums me out. Took me a couple of nights to beat it.

If you can make it past the Hatter you're fine, that's the hardest part.

I also got stuck in the Riddler stage on the Sega CD game. If there was a pattern to avoid hitting the obstacles, I wasn't seeing it.

As a matter of fact you should probably be using the kick almost all the time. I've heard complaints that regular enemies are too bullet spongy, but you'll cut through most of them with ease using the kick. Just do that as often as you can inbetween the weapon charges.

Specialized in decking and shotguns, but switched to silenced SMGs for corp runs once I had enough Karma to get its damage on par with the Predator cannon. Earned favor with all the runners but mostly used Winston. Never hired long-term this time because I wanted to use short term runs to earn favor. Used a lot of Petr and Stark, too, but Rianna with SMGs and Winston with a shotgun or a silenced SMG for corp runs were my go-to. Did HQ runs and matrix runs on all 5 megacorps.

Prevented the megacorps from unleashing a power station virus and avenged my brother by stopping Renraku and then killing Thon?

Null sweat, chum.

High five man. I've been playing this a lot lately, but it can be a little frustrating grinding for money. Any money or upgrade tips?

Also, in Matrix runs, do the different attacks have different chances of landing?

Shadowrun stays on my list of "learn how the fuck to play & get into this" one day, the early bits are so off-putting when you're lost/swarmed but it looks so cool

Do matrix runs for cash. Usually do escort and delivery runs in the Barrens for a couple hours first to earn Karma (1 per run which is fast because the runs are fast). Invest that into your decking (Computer skill) and I suppose get it to about 6-7 ASAP for Medium tier matrix runs. You can start easy matrix runs sooner, too, to get cash. The big thing is improve everything... not just your decking skill or cyberdeck. Do easy matrix runs until you get 25k nuyen for that Fuchi-5. That thing you can plow through the hardest matrix runs in the game with yet if you've got the decking skill and upgrades.

Don't worry about saving up for a bigger deck. Get that Fuchi-5 cyberdeck by doing easy matrix runs, and then upgrade your Deck Response. I think it takes 3 upgrades so that's 15k and then Lv5 Attack program is about another 30k I think... Fuchi-5 cyberdeck with Lv5 attack and Lv3 deck response is all you need to get through medium runs, and all the money you make from that, sink into getting Attack up to at least Lv7 to make expert runs faster. Bod and Evasion matrix upgrades are nice for a short while when you first start doing expert runs since you'll likely still be a little slow and inaccurate, and Black Ice will tear through you pretty quick if you accidently Alert -- but, honnestly, if you just focus on your offense, you'll begin to burn through black ice in 3-4 hits even with a Fuchi-5. And make sure you always have enough memory for 5 data files... so upgrade that storage to its max which is enough for 5 files at about 40-60mp each. Data raids are basically best way I make cash.

What I do when I really need money is find a good easy or medium matrix run, and just use its passcode to farm it for data. Find a good matrix system where there's a good data storage (DS) near the SAN entrance, and the route is safe (so, weaker nodes, basically) and, optimally, also near the CPU so you can reset the Alert. Once you find a matrix layout that seems rather optimal, and you can raid the DS without finishing the run, just raid the DS for 5 files, exit the matrix (use the video phone near the data fixer in downtown Seattle), sell the files, and repeat.

I'll usually do a couple hours of Barrens run to start and put that all in my decking Computer skill, then start doing easy matrix runs with your starter Allegiance Alpha deck and any cash I made to get Attack program up to about 3 I guess for easy matrix runs. Then, do those until you can upgrade to the Fuchi-5, and start doing medium runs. Upgrade Attack to maybe 4 and your memory so you have enough space for it + 5 data files, but also upgrade your deck response ASAP. The faster speed makes a huge difference. You can upgrade Deception to 4, too, which makes medium matrix runs faster and easier, but I usually leave it at 1 to save money because it is more useful to have at 1 for expert runs anyhow (it's another 'burn program' once you have to start dealing with tar pits so you have to return to decking vendors to but 'burnt' lv1 programs less often). Basically just keep using that upgraded Fuchi-5 cyberdeck on medium runs until you can do expert runs... for me I think that's usually about Attack lv5 if you're decking is Computer 8-9 but Attack lv7 is really where it becomes a lot more efficient.

Once you're at that point, all the megacorp passcodes will remain on your deck, so you can just farm those for cash. Doing runs is better to get the karma, too, but if you just want cash, I just like to farm Renraku since it has only 3 nodes to the CPU and 4 nodes to the best data storage (Aztechnology is 4 and 5), and just two tar pits that you can use either sleeze or deception is burners on because there's no barriers (just black ice and tar pits). You can often get away with just using Attack once its Lv8 and your decking is around 10, but make sure you save often because having a tar put burn your Lv8 Attack instead of a Lv1 sleeze or deception is damn expensive haha.

By that point, you should basically be at your peak of making money. I usually begin to use excess cash for Heavy Armor from the Yakuza contact instead of upgrading to the Fairlight Excalibur or even Fuchi-7 because really a fully upgrade Fuchi-5 with high decking skill can easily burn through expert runs. Mistake I always made my first few times through Shadowrun was basically just focusing on trying to buy the most expensive deck, but you're better off splitting your cash between a cheaper deck with higher Attack program and maxed out deck response speed assuming you're putting all your karma into your decking Computer skill. Same goes for any of the shadowrunning deckers you can hire if your a gator shaman or street samurai.

Short version of this is run the Barrens a while to get your decking to about 5 and get Attack program to about 2-3, start doing easy matrix runs from and always selling 5 data files with your starting Allegiance Alpha, upgrade to the Fuchi-5 soon as you got 25k nuyen, upgrade your Attack to about 5 and mp storage/deck response speed fully, and then start trying expert runs soon as your Computer skill/Attack program are about over 10-12 summed (so, Attack 5 and Computer 7 or Attack 7 and Computer 6), and somewhere around there you'll be able to start doing expert matrix runs or raiding Renraku data storage with some success. Consider maybe one or two Bod and Evasion upgrades and putting a bit of Karma into improving all your Attributes at least a couple times since its cheap relative to Computer once it's 8 or 9), but the sooner you can get your offense up, your defense really won't matter. That's where you can start making 10-20k nuyen a run and in just a couple minutes burn through a raid on Renraku's confidential data storage.

Shorter version lol... do matrix runs and raid data storage nodes to sell data files to the data fixer, get the Fuchi-5 cyberdeck ASAP, and put most (top up your decking Attributes a bit) your karma into Computer decking skill and nuyen into Attack and deck response until you can survive expert runs and megacorp black ice.

Oh man, have people played Trouble Shooter? I just got a copy on the cheap with the box, and I'm totally into this. I love shooters with this sort of quirky sense of humor, and the option-side-swap shooting mechanics are so good. It reminds me a lot of Magical Chase in some ways, which is my all-time-favorite shooter. This isn't as colorful or as well designed, but it's a hell of a good time.

The sequel, Battle Mania Daijinjou, is a lot better IMO. It was only released in Japan/Korea and is quite expensive but there's an English translation patch for the ROM, so you can at least try it out on Everdrive or something.

How did I not know about this thread....I loves me some Genesis!

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction for a Sega CDX issue I have. Carts work perfectly, but the CD play is iffy. I tried booting up Sonic CD, and aside from some super loud screeching/scratching sounds, it takes forever to load, and keeps skipping cutscenes. The disc is in fine condition btw.

I'm guessing it's a problem with the lens right? I want to repair it myself, but seems quite difficult and involves soldering. I really don't want to destroy the console in the process of trying to repair it.

Timu's talk of The Adventures of Batman & Robin got me in the mood to make a run for it, again. I got all the way up to the final boss on the zeppelin waisting only one life. Of course there is no room to maneuver and your weapon powers down with every death. Naturally I had no problem with the first half of the Hatter level you can almost run past most of it. The second part is where I waisted all my continues. I made it all the way up to the giant gnome but the part before, with the holographic gnomes flying at you, is almost unavoidable and I take a ton of damage. Oh well...try again later.

A hidden gem. Looked for it for a looong time before finding a copy unexpectedly. Great cut scenes, nice graphics, etc. One of my favorites on the Genesis. I think a second one came out in Japan.

Battle Mania was the sequel and it is indeed excellent. I reviewed it awhile ago and can't recommend it enough.

after finding a big ass 32" trinitron flat screen CRT in the 'free stuff' area of my apartment building last month I've been slowly rebuilding my Genesis collection. Managed to get a nice model 1, thankfully dodged the VA7 bullet as I didn't know about the motherboard differences when I bought it.

By chance a couple weeks ago a nice lady across the street decided to sell her and her husband's entire massive Genesis game collection. The prices weren't amazing but I got some good deals on games and a 6 button controller. More importantly I got almost every game I wanted to actually play including Lightening Force/Thunder Force 4.

I played most great Genesis games as a kid but never knew about Thunder Force. So there's no nostalgia here, which makes it more impressive that I can't stop playing or thinking about this game. The music is amazing (especially stage 8) and it's just a really well designed game, it's not too easy and it's not frustrating. I've already beaten it (on easy) and just keep coming back for more.

The one other genesis game I knew about as a kid but never played is Dynamite Headdy. I'm a big Treasure fan but never got around to it. Seems like it's not super expensive either, but ebay shipping in Canada is a big downer so I might just keep looking for it at yard sales and flea markets.

Did they have an official 6 button controller shaped like the original genesis controller, that had blur XYZ buttons?

The 6-button pad bundled with the Genesis 3 is made by Majesco and feels cheap, but yes, it's sized and shaped like the original controller and officially licensed by Sega.

The one I'm seeing has blue XYZ buttons. I'm trying to figure out if its official. Otherwise it looks very close to that one you posted.

I did a long-overdue controller cleaning recently, I started with my nasty-ass PS2 pad and then moved on to my Genesis controllers. It's amazing how simple the Genesis pads are in comparison - there's practically nothing in there! It was a simpler time when game consoles were thought of more as kids' toys than anything else. Made them real easy to clean, though.

I recently did the same, deep cleaning my controllers and I really agree. Though it is also interesting to see how much of controller design has remained unchanged. The mechanism for the face buttons and d-pad are pretty much the same from the NES pad to the DS4. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

My genesis controllers feel near brand new after a good cleaning, feels great to use them. Only thing that still bothers me is I couldn't fully clean the indented letters of the buttons, even after some hard scrubbing with alcohol and soap and water (after fully dismantling and removing them of course). But what can you do.
