Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Out of curiosity I checked my copy and sure enough I have one. I doesn't use the typical security bit, but a #10 Torx bit instead.

I have to look at my bloodlines cuz it was pieced together years ago, but the majesco manual would've had a monochrome cover, right? I believe mine has full color cover.

The Majesco manual is a photocopy of the real manual. It's all black and white on cheap paper. It also came in a cardboard box instead of a plastic case.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the cheap flimsy cardboard box. I almost never see a Genesis cardboard game box in good shape anymore. They're worst than the Snes/N64 boxes by a mile.

Yep, they're the worst. I printed out some reproduction covers for my Comix Zone and S&K for use in the regular clamshell cases. Had to clip off some cart holder tabs to fit the S&K cart in the case tho :^V

Ran into a ad on CL for a gen 2 genesis for $25 and a gen 3 for $35. Comes with 2 controllers but no games. Good price? Anything thing I should be looking out for?

Plan on starting up a little retro station along with a 36in triniton someone is giving away.

Gen 3 is not worth it at this point in time other than as a curio. Don't bother.

Gen 2 is better. Not ideal (that'd be a Gen 1 with "HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS" on the circle around the cartridge slot), as the sound quality is more often than not a tad questionable (not that you'd notice unless you were told what to listen for), but it actually works with the Sega CD or 32X unlike the Gen 3.

Looking at the ad again it's actually a gen 1 for $35. I'll take a look at it this weekend.

I actually bought a Genesis 3 from Wal Mart a long time ago just to get a new genesis controller...and then I was stuck with a terrible Genesis controller.

How do you play JP Rolling Thunder 2 on an NA Genesis? I've got a Game Genie, but it says something about Japanese use only after the Namcot boot screen.

I know some games have specific codes, but is there a catch all region free code that helps others aside from those?

The games either have no region lock or they need a title-specific code AFAIK.

It wasn't really an acceptable solution for me when I tried it.

What happened to the console? Because I could, you know, help you get rid of it.

Nah, shipping it to Europe would probably be more expensive than the console itself.

After using a 60Hz modded PAL MD2 for years, I finally got a Japanese model 1 Mega Drive. It's the oldest 1988 model (Japan only with the R next to Sega).

Goddamn was it filthy. Mega Drive consoles in particular have too many crevices for grime to get in. It needed a scrub and polish with metho then detergent.

So many separate plastic parts riveted together. You cannot take it apart fully without breaking it.

I also forgot how large and fat MD1 consoles are too.

I had to do the exact same thing a while back to restore another Mega Drive of the very same model!
Pretty decent effort that was well worth it.

I'm kind of getting ready to do it again with a couple of arcade sticks I recently grabbed: an official SEGA 6B stick & a Hori fighting stick that can handle MD/SNES/PCE. I wish I'd taken before pictures actually, both were filthy to a ridiculous degree.

So I've been slowly picking up a number of shmups for the platform over the past year, and I am kind of shocked at the sheer number that were published. I never even suspected this back in the day, it just wasn't part of what I was exposed to (aside from having a pretty neglected copy of Truxton). By actual count & share to total library, the Mega Drive has got to be one of the platforms with the most games in this genre out there!

On that note, I received a copy of Whip Rush this week. Not only a pretty great ride but I've also enjoyed the manual a great deal. Just look at these enemy names!

All in all, I'm pretty fascinated with the effort and artwork that used to go into manuals like these.
A guilty pleasure of mine is in the last few pages with the warnings about what to avoid doing with the cartridges:

Some day, I'll start scanning these to share as a gallery. So many designs that are unique by game!

I cringe when I look at early episodes of Generation 16. I didn't spend nearly enough time playing most of those games.

what are they? Xmen 2 and Vector Man?

Oh crap I totally forgot about X-Men 2. That makes it 3 then.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie
X-Men 2
Vectorman

Last I checked X-Men 2 was only foil in the cover art while the other two are foil all around. I could be wrong.

EDIT: Been playing Rocket Knight Adventures recently again for the 14th trillion time, stage 1 music is so good. Encapsulates that Genesis sound perfectly.

RKA is so great. Apparenly Yamane had some hand in the soundtrack. I thought Bloodlines was her first on the system.

It's weird since RKA sounds expertly arranged and takes advantage of the full range of the hardware. But Bloodlines only uses the 6 FM channels with no PSG, and isn't as well programmed on a technical level. I wonder if she just composed the music on paper and then had different sound coders/programmers of variying skill implement it for her on each title.

I can get behind this, too. One of my favorite soundtracks on the platform since back when it was brand new! Beautiful composition and execution on the hardware.

I've been playing Alien Soldier the past couple days and I just beat it. I gotta say, it's an instant classic. One of, if not the best 16-bit action game. The premise of having a game with almost only bosses, the perfected pattern memorizing and weapon optimizing gameplay, the constant stream of new and interesting ideas, the presentation, top level stuff. I'll definitely be replaying this down the line.

My preferred "loudout" was Sword, Lancer, Flame, and Homing. I dropped Sword for an additional Lancer in stage 19.

One thing though, the final boss was disappointing. I didn't expect to beat it on my first try. I was ready for another stage 20 boss rush!

The price of the cart is ridiculous so I just got it on WiiVC. This game deserves the 3D treatment, not Gunstar :)

PS: Supereasy is for babbies

I have a repro copy, and I can't beat the first boss. :'( I guess that I need to get gud.

I picked up 3D Gunstar Heroes today along with Gargoyle's Quest II, and both games are great.

It's an amazing game by one of my all-time favorite developers. One of the incredibly rare times I broke my $100 rule to own it =[

it's suuuuuch a good game from what I've played. Treasure's other action-platformers aren't in the same league.

I haven't beaten it yet, trying to 1cc it on superhard.

I can never ride the Alien Soldier train because every time I try to play it I found the controls to be too awkward.

Kind of like when I tried to play Sub Terrania for the first time and was like "nope" pretty much immediately.

Heh, I remember facing the first boss the first time and wondering how the hell to kill it in time, spamming buster, homing, and the spread gun, but once you get to know the game better you can literally beat the first boss in 1 second.

That's something I really liked about the game, the sense of progression was quite good. I would get a bit farther nearly every run, and the previous bosses would become a breeze. For the most part. Supereasy mode apparently gives the option of unlimited continues, but I find that style of play unsatisfying.

I think it's one of of the few games where it could be justified, that's just how good it is.

It's funny you mention both those games because I've been super into Alien Soldier lately, own the actual JP cart. And recently showed my friend it, he had never heard of it because of it's rarity and only releasing in Japan. Of course he had the same initial, controls are clunky at first but then loved it thought process.

After we played Alien Solider for a bit he took out Sub Terrania, I had never played it until then but yeah it was so awkward at first but it's definitely a fun game. The intro is amazing too.

Yep. I actually "beat" the game years ago (continuing on superhard, lol) and replaying it for real now, I still hate the fact there are no shoulder buttons to manage movement lock or weapon switching. Alien Soldier solves the problem better than Gunstar or Contra, but it still sucks. Sega had the better action games, and Nintendo had the better button layout. :(

The good news is weapon and movement switching doesn't need to happen often-- quite little actually-- and by repeating bosses you quickly discover what weapon and movement type you usually need to use. It's balanced to not be a burden.

When weapon switching I don't look at the ring around the character, just the top right to remember the order of my weapons. For movement I leave it unlocked (gold armor) until I know what I'm doing. 90% of the time, unlocked movement seems fine. Pick whatever weapon you like most, really.

I think the story takes place in 2015, so everyone has to beat it now. ;)

That's interesting, I used the unlocked (silver armor) for the whole game. I never found a real need for moving and shooting at the same time.

It does take place in 2015, I smiled when I saw that.

It'd be nice if they added the Gunstar Super Heroes-esque ability to use both Free and Fixed Shot at any time you wanted (or use both to fix your aim but run around). Super Heroes wasn't as good as the original Gunstar, but it was still an ace game, and that particular feature was one of its best additions.

(Maybe they did add that in, I haven't picked up the port yet.)
