Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

God damn, Popful Mail is just terrible. The difficulty is just ridiculous. I had to go through three boss fights practically in a row (Mythril Guardian, Bad Arnold Impressionist, Bad Arnold Impressionist Transformed as a Monster). It is so obvious that this game wasn't suppose to be difficult but it seems that Working Designs made it so anyway.

Yeah the difficulty spike on the boss fights is pretty bad. There's one spot in the game that you can farm for a lot of gold though, so you can just farm for gold real quick and spam the fruits. The arnold impression gave me the most trouble, so I feel after that it's not so bad.

Working Designs is notorious for doing stupid crap like that to give the buyer "more value". Usually, it's annoying but tolerable given the overall package but they have ruined games with this silly philosophy (Silhouette Mirage). That's the problem when localizers think they're game designers - they often are beyond their depth.

Why didn't they just have an "easy" mode then that would be the original version? The most obnoxious part of these things is when people hold this bullshit as badge of honor. "Lol I guess you aren't hardcore enough". I wish there was a hack to play the Japanese version with English text so I can play the game properly.

If they toned down the difficulty, add fast travel to towns, and take out the Arnold impressions, then you would likely have a solid game.

Because that would be WD admitting they don't know what they're doing when it comes to game design (why would you want the "crappy" original design when we "fixed" it would be their "logic"). That kind of crap doesn't fly today but back in the 90s we were just happy these games were getting localized.

I'd suggest you stay away from Exile II: Wicked Phenomenon, then.
That game was wrecked. Popful Mail, is at least realistically beatable.

On the other side, I seem to recall Albert Odyssey actually was improved (as far as encounter rate goes, anyway.) So they did get better at it.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.I appreciate that they localized games no one else would, but the way they fiddled with both the script and the game itself really rubs me the wrong way.

Hasn't Vic said that they didn't make games harder just to make them harder, but to reduce quick used sales or something like that? That is, make it harder so people won't finish it quickly, sell it back, and maybe affect new sales.

it's a deliberate strategy to make the more expensive newer games look 'premium'. It also makes the 'budget' part of the shelf stand out for the price-conscious consumer, they just need to look for the bright colour for cheap games etc.

PS1 USA fluro green is the worst one ever really.

It was even more annoying in the cassette days: all of the budget releases were in jewel cases (rather than big cardboard boxes) so there was no need to mess with the art at all.

The EU PS platinum titles are quite tasteful though.

I can't believe how I grew up so close to this platform yet never even suspected that it had so many absolutely fantastic arcade sticks.
Never too late to rectify though, and now I've got one these bad boys coming in the mail next:

It's a brown paper bag special, notice the artwork behind busting through.
I don't understand why all greatest hits type releases have to look so terrible in every platform ever. The awful designs can't really do much to move copies, can they?

Congrats on the games, BTW, lots of favorites among that set!

I like the yellow part of the spine on NA GCN greatest hits. It looks cool imo.

The NA sega classics kinda had the original boxart shrunk down in the center of the cover with the newer red striped visual on the outside. I have a Columns like that.

This conversation is kind of its own rabbit hole, but I will say I've always been rather partial to the budget PSone Books budget releases. They mostly didn't touch the artwork at all and kept the budget highlights to the spine card:

Slim cases too, yum. I have Symphony of the Night in this style. Wish I'd though to pick up Gradius Gaiden like that, too.

Yeah PSOne books were great.

I just sold my Gradius Gaiden one lol, as I had a copy of the original release as well.

Hello guys I need help.

I purchased a brand new Sega Genesis Model 1 .... yes it was something I could not afford in childhood and looked through the glass of Video Game Stores with awe...

The cosmetic condition is great, however there games do not work correctly.

Some weird message shows up in HEX Decimal. Most games freeze.

I have tested and cleaned every single cartridge on another Genesis Model 3 and everything works well.

I have searched the Internet with no answer but I did find this is a

GENESIS MODEL 1 - w/ TMSS

I want to swap the Capacitors to make it the best possible unit however perhaps someone has come across this issue.

Snagged a High Definition model 1 that I plan on attaching to the Sega CD model 2. Even have the spacer for it. Who else is sporting the ultimate Megazord? I can't wait to see how obnoxiously large it is

No, it could be worse. Like a model 2 genesis on top of a model 1 sega CD. I threw up a little just picturing it in my head.
That's just disgusting.
Warning, NSFW
SEGA%20CD%201%20Genesis%202.jpg

At least mine serves the purpose of being the longest Segazord possible. That is just gross.

EDIT: Silliness aside, I only get sound through the headphone port (which sounds wonderful) Am I not getting sound because I'm trying to use the model 2 scart cable using a converter patch cable (I think this came with my 32x) maybe it doesn't carry sound because it is for the video in on 32x.

I'm playing it through the Sega Vintage Collection on PS3.

Maybe I should abuse the save stage and save everytime I manage to dodge him.

But I also need to make sure Naoko doesn't get crushed on time. ;_;

Elemental Master is on my Genesis Top 20 and easily the best Shmup on the system. It's my favorite Shmup of all time too.

Received a shipment from Japan. Part of it is the Elemental Master OST. The game itself is on its way too.

Dude. You don't even know how jelly I am right now. Elemental Master is my number one game soundtrack of all time. I spent so many hours as a kid listening to that sound test through headphones, Technosoft rocked it out on that one, amazing soundtrack.

Kudos on the find!

I always wanted for my SNES. I remember seeing it in game magazines and wanted for the SFII home versions.

I haven't played Comix Zone ever since I was a kid, but I really liked that game even though it was brutally hard...I should play it again.
