Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

So full list of what I'm thinking of selling:

Genesis games
Have game, case, and instructions, though not is pristine condition (instruction book is pretty beat up, and tend to have stickers from being former rental copies):

Phantom 2040
Target earth
Arcus Odyssey
Ghouls & Ghosts
Traysia

Just game and case:
Super Thunder Blade (case is really beat up)
Pirates of Dark Water
Thunder Force II
Biohazard battle
Dungeon & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun (I currently have no idea if the battery is still good)

Just game:
Thunder Force III
Whip Rush
The Lost VIkings

TG-16 games
Double Dungeons (just game and instructions...I'll send in a generic jewel case)

game, instructions, and original jewel case.
Road Spirits
Ys Book I & II
Exile
Valis II
Valis III

holding off on Ys III for the moment, though if someone here were interested, I'd look up prices.

Gunstarheroes or anyone else that uploads video, do you guys use the Elgato, and then a bunch of splitters? It seems to be the cheapest option for a quality capture device, and does take 240p and lower, but I think i'd have to have a bunch of splitters to get it to record while displaying on a CRT?

I have a slighty crappier capture device (Dazzle) that works pretty well for me, though i got it as a gift from a friend who had it before me. I plan to eventually go to the Elgato at some point, but i'm not sure exactly what the wiring for that would be.

It's not the cheapest quality one that takes 240p, it's this one.

However I'm not sure if you can use splitters as well with that one compared to the Elgato.

I wouldn't recommend a splitter. I've always noticed a severe darkening and signal loss. I use a powered distribution amplifier. You can get them in s-video and component versions, preferably used on eBay. Hold out for $20 or less.

Now that Startech in the new Elgato thread looks like a great balance! I'll have to look into a powered amp. The component versions feature S-video/composite too or no? Too bad every capture device doesn't just automatically allow you to play on your TV while said device is capturing.

That capture card you linked is a great choice as it does RGB even along with everything, I say pick it up as it's a steal for the price.

So my next question as a beginner:

While recording, i'd probably have to view the game on PC/laptop if I didn't have a powered amp or at worst splitter?

How is this game to anyone who has played it?
Hesitant of paying 20 bucks for a loose copy

yeah, i remember being tired of the Vallejo-y covers in the day, but that Wings of Wor one was always legit

there's no way someone didn't bootleg it for a metal cover somewhere in eastern europe

Out of the blue I decided to play Demolition Man on the Genesis. Awesome movie that needs no introduction. I'm originally familiar with the SNES version which was one of those random games my dad bought for me from a clearance bin. I'd put Demolition Man in the category of "Better than you would expect." It's a Run 'N Gun game that has a couple of Smash TV-inspired levels.

It follows the movie pretty well but it's fairly flawed. Both versions suffer slow down. But in a weird twist the Genesis version has better sound. The music and sound effects are louder and have much more kick. Hard to describe but you just have to play it. SNES version has slightly better controls because it has a dedicated button for stationary shooting. Graphically they're the same, the Genesis version is a little darker as per usual. But the screen is zoomed in significantly more in the Genesis version which makes it a little harder to spot enemies. But, this is weird, enemies in the Genesis version (on Normal difficulty) are easier and there's not nearly as many of them as in the SNES version. In the SNES version, the instant an enemy appears on screen they will fire at you. In the Genesis version you get a second or two to fire at them before they fire back. Enemies spawn out of thin air a lot in the SNES version too.

The overhead levels, thankfully there are not many as they are the worst aspect of the game, are easier in the Genesis version.

But the deal breaker is the slow down. And I will use this game as an example of the hardware not being a limitation but the way the game is programmed. Because it's a given that the Genesis had a significantly faster processor than the SNES at the expense of not having as great of a sound chip. Both games have slowdown as I said, but it's more tolerable in the SNES version. It doesn't happen quite as often and it mostly happens in cinematic moments where explosions are going off nowhere near the player. This may have been intentional slowdown for effect but who knows. The Genesis version has inconsistent slowdown that becomes a pain in the ass.

It's a pretty decent little game. 6.5 out of 10.

Demolition Man is by Orca Games who AFAIK went on to focus solely on game audio, so of course it's going to sound good (Also check out their Sylvester & Tweety game which has some real nice arrangements). The music is very well programmed and there's a ton of detail in there, like at least 4 different variations of guitar feedback/pinch notes. I'm pretty sure the SNES version flat out samples several sounds from the Genesis version, and it's not as intricate since the memory just can't hold so many different sounds simultaneously.

Even the Sega CD soundtrack retains a lot of the FM elements since it sounds so good to begin with

Which game would you guys say pushed the system to the max from a technical standpoint? Sonic 3D Blast?

Adventures of Batman and Robin is up there.

Red Zone is very advanced but not a very good game.

Pier Solar is an indie RPG for the system that's pretty advanced.

I know I'm a fanboy for Alien Soldier but from what I've personally seen, the graphics (including all the unique graphical tricks), colors, music and puppet like animations from the huge bosses all make Alien Soldier the most impressive game on the system in my opinion. It looks like a 2D Sega Saturn game to me and that's bonkers considering how much more powerful the Saturn was compared to the Genesis.

I just don't know anymore. Honestly I still want a legit copy of snatcher, but with the prices and chances of bootleg... I just don't know. Then again if proven fake, eBay and Amazon would be easy for refunds.

My sentiments exactly. I was just about to post the same.

I've tried reporting the guy that sells the Snatcher Label printed blank discs to eBay, but that didn't go anywhere.

Eh, I don't know. It was clearly marked as blank discs, and tbh I'd like to have nice pictures on my CD-Rs for the games I will never have legitimately, instead of my terrible handwriting. And it's not like a burnt game with a Snatcher picture could ever pass as the real deal, it's just obvious when looking at the data side of the CD if the thing has been pressed or burnt.

Other than Virtua Racing being on the Genesis, 32X & Saturn. Does anyone know of any other game that crossed all 3 platforms? Seems odd that out of all of the games in Sega's arsenal this would be the one they used. Maybe the popularity of virtual graphics in the early 90's, or it was an easy quick and dirty port?

Edit: Now that I think about it more. Mortal Kombat 2 was on the Master System(didn't even know this existed), Genesis, Game Gear, 32X, Sega CD & Saturn. Although thats third party.

Virtua Fighter was on the 32X and Saturn, and VF2 was on the Megadrive and Saturn, does that count?

[edit] Oh, I had MK2 on the Game Gear, Same graphics and sound as the SMS, the memories. Having a third button to block definitely helps, I have no idea how they did it on the Master System.
