Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

It's like an adventure game/beat 'em up hybrid. If you find the best path and use your items wisely it's not that bad.

I'm still partial to the original Shinobi. Mostly due to the arcade roots of mine.

Revenge was great, though.

I also liked the Arcade Shadow Dancer.

Hello guys I need help.

I purchased a brand new Sega Genesis Model 1 .... yes it was something I could not afford in childhood and looked through the glass of Video Game Stores with awe...

The cosmetic condition is great, however there games do not work correctly.

Some weird message shows up in HEX Decimal. Most games freeze.

I have tested and cleaned every single cartridge on another Genesis Model 3 and everything works well.

I have searched the Internet with no answer but I did find this is a

GENESIS MODEL 1 - w/ TMSS

I want to swap the Capacitors to make it the best possible unit however perhaps someone has come across this issue.

Can you take some pictures of the screen?

I played through the first Echo and really enjoyed it when it released. I picked up Tides of Time in a bundle, but haven't really had any urge to play through it. When Echo first released I remember thinking that it was nice seeing something different which is why I played through it.

I had it (still have it) for the Master System, my young self never understood shit of the game. Maybe I should go back?

Yeah, why not. I wouldn't recommend the Master System version, though. The Mega Drive / Genesis one is the original, but it has been revised and improved in the Mega CD and PC releases, so play those if you can.

Beat the original mode in Mercs again. This time I didn't use any save states. Still, a very, very good game. I don't know why this one is so unknown, it's up there with the Genesis Batman and Robin as criminally underrated amazing games on the system. Also, another title where the console port is leaps and bounds better than the arcade version (along with the NES port of Kung Fu, Bionic Commando, Ninja Gaiden, Punch Out, Contra, Golden Axe).

The trick is to collect as many medals as possible, always invest in those screen-clearing missiles at the shop, and don't spend any more medals if you can help it. The Rifle and Launcher characters are expendable. Top tier characters:

Burner
Laser
Homing

Burner borderline breaks the game. The only drawback is him being one of the slowest characters even if his speed is fully upgraded and the damage on his Flamethrower isn't great when dealing with tanks and bosses. Laser does the most damage of any character, moreso when his weapon is fully upgraded plus it reaches fullscreen. So it's easy with Laser to creep your way to a tank and cheese it from fullscreen.

I would recommend the Game Gear version over the Master System one, if only for the third (pause) button availability. I don't know how Master System Ecco dealt with the sonar and the two action buttons.

Ecco 8bits is a good game to play in its own right, I don't feel it's simply a downgraded version of the original 16bits game. I played both on the Game Gear, several times to completion, and I believe some of the levels are different, and the gameplay itself is different: there is much less dolphin drifting and the puzzles are more squared due to the limitations of the console, making it maybe a less difficult game.

There has been a homemade Enhanced PC edition, merging the superior PC graphics and the superior Mega CD soundtrack. A must-play if you don't mind playing on a computer. Windows only. http://web8.orcaserver.de/ecco/downloads/games/

FINALLY tracked down a copy of Ranger X.

Managed to cop Super Hang-On for 2 bucks too, but I hear the 3DS version is baller status.

If you don't have a 6 button controller you should track that down as well. A lot easier than the standard controller. Also, Ranger X is a great game and is very underrated, congrats.

Also, has anyone here played Solider's of Fortune/Chaos Engine? I've always been interested in this game and finally found it cheap CIB. Just waiting for it to get here.

Soldiers of Fortune/The Chaos Engine is one of my favorite games on the system. My brothers never got into it as much as I did, so I would start a two-player game, and kill off the second character as I found that preferable to having an AI-controlled partner.

When I first got the game I thought that the announcer was saying "Made in Spain" whenever I hit a check-point. It didn't dawn on me until a few days later that it was instead saying "Players Saved." I was disappointed that the game wasn't being absurd.

It looks really slow and really, really annoying to play.

That looks rage inducing.

I like the box art though. It has that "It came from outer space 1950's movie poster look," which i like.

Yeah, you look at the box art and it looks like a sci fi run and gun game. How could you fuck that up? But the devs found a way.

Selling some games (mostly Genesis and Sega CD).

http://www.ebay.com/sch/ninja_hoppy/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=

It pains me to do so, but economic realities intervene.

(Probably could have mentioned this here sooner, but was distracted).

Sorry you had to sell your stuff. :c

Also yeah, 2 of the games I would have been interested in have already sold, and for as much as I would have paid directly. Oh well, I hope you get good prices for the rest.

Finally found a decent copy of Sonic and Knuckles near me, so I'm able to build my own Tower of Power. I feel like a real genesis owner now:

daaaamn..looking at sold prices, stuff like bloodlines clearly climbed up fast while i wasn't paying attention. congrats on the sales & props on your taste in the day, man!

Fave Segazords I've encountered on the web:

such beauty
much wonder

A good option for maximum height on a Segazord would be a Japanese power base converter at the top. SG1000/Mark III carts are about two mega Drive carts tall, so you'd really get that extra level happening.

Don't forget the Sega CD model 1 beneath the Mega Drive too!

Thanks...its not like my tastes have changed, but practical issues have taken over.

Still, It's been nice having the upward trend of genesis games prices work in my favor.

Bloodlines was an odd one though...That was my buy it now price. Someone bought the game for that price outright, and it was the first thing to go.

I've been super happy with most of the auctions. Piece of mind knowing I have money for rent while looking for new/better work.

(A little stunned what Snatcher ended up going for...it jumped the final $108 in literally the last 30 seconds).

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
Or those :p

Speaking of which, which is regarded as the better one?
Phantasy Star IV is the best of the series. Some purists will say it's II, but I find it too grindy and tedious, it aged very poorly (I think Phantasy Star I aged better honestly). PS IV just improves on every single aspect.

Shining Force I and II are both excellent. II improves on everything about I, except maybe the art direction (both have good art but I slightly prefer Yoshitaka Tamaki's style). Both are very much worth playing anyway and very fun, but I swear, any flaw you would find in SF1, rest assured SF2 fixed it.

If you mean "which is better" as in PS vs SF, well... it's a bit apples and oranges. Phantasy Star is a traditional turn-based JRPG with random battle encounters, where as Shining Force is turn-based strategy-RPG with tiled battle maps like Fire Emblem or the Tactics games. It does have fully explorable towns with NPCs, shops etc. like the more traditional RPGs too, though, but the battle system is completely different. I enjoy both very much and couldn't pick a favourite between PS IV and SF II. Played both to death. ^^

Other than the usual recommendation of Shining Force I and II:
  • Soleil.
  • Story of Thor (or Beyond Oasis in the U.S.)
  • Landstalker if you can find it.
  • Shadowrun.
  • Light Crusader.
Aren't all of those (not sure about Shadowrun) action/adventure like Zelda, rather than RPGs? Great games but I'm not sure if that's what he's looking for. (Also, might be worth noting that Soleil is known as Crusader of Centy in the US.)

I have a cool story about Snatcher.

I was at a flea market, It was around 8 years ago? I used to have good finds back then.

There was a lady with a bunch of junk, CDs etc, and what did I see in the CDs but a few Mega CD games (PAL). Road Avenger, Sega Arcade collection and... Snatcher!

I pulled it out, it had some very minor water damage, but was otherwise mint.

I asked the lady how much.

"One dollar"

I hesitated nervously, knowing I had struck gold, and slowly started getting my wallet out. She took this as reticence to pay $1. So she counter-bid:

"Fifity cents".

I paid her the original $1, and she was very happy with that lol.

I went home and looked up the value. The only PAL copy for sale in the world right was in the UK, and was GBP250 (at that stage that was AU$500-600).

I played it through, with the Justifier. So good, I never thought I would have a chance to own that game!

I sold it a few years ago for a price something like $400 when I downsized, as the Mega CD just takes up too much room.

That's awesome! It's always fun to hear about random finds like that...it doesn't happen so much anymore (people tend to be better versed in what they have, which is good for them, but less fun for the collectors).

Anyway, I'll be posting a new batch of games on eBay this Saturday, but I can certainly give you guys first dibs. I have to go over what comes next, but its going to be some Genesis carts (some loose, some in boxes), a couple more HuCards and some TG-16 CDs. I can post a full list tomorrow (in their relevant threads). I haven't figured out what I'm asking yet, but a couple would be:
Biohazard Battle
Target Earth
Thunder Force II & III
Valis II TG-16 CD
Valis III TG-16 CD
Ys I & II TG-16
Ys 3 TG-16.

Brilliant 16 bit color graphics, incredible 16-bit power from 68000 microprocessor, built-in digital sound and stereo music synthesizer and extensive library of hit games. This game console came out in 1991 and has never been used. This Sega Genesis system comes with 1 remote, the classic video game Sonic the Hedgehog! which propelled sega to one of the Elite video game systems of its time. This is the first sonic the Hedgehog video from the sonic series. Don't miss out on this special item, it's a great collectors item and great for any video game lover. It's a steal at this price.

I was one of the lucky kids who had both a Super Nintendo and a Genesis. But aside from Street Fighter, I was always drawn more to the Genesis and its games –– especially titles like Golden Axe, Shinobi and Sonic the Hedgehog. I also loved the quirky titles like Gunstar Heroes and Ristar. It will always be one of my favorite gaming consoles.
