Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Other than Virtua Racing being on the Genesis, 32X & Saturn. Does anyone know of any other game that crossed all 3 platforms? Seems odd that out of all of the games in Sega's arsenal this would be the one they used. Maybe the popularity of virtual graphics in the early 90's, or it was an easy quick and dirty port?

Edit: Now that I think about it more. Mortal Kombat 2 was on the Master System(didn't even know this existed), Genesis, Game Gear, 32X, Sega CD & Saturn. Although thats third party.

Not exactly the same, but Space Harrier was SMS, 32X, Saturn, and DC

Yeah, Red Zone would get my vote.

I also think Thunder Force IV looks pretty great with all of the parallaxing.

There's always going to be one game which does something specific better than the other. As a complete, overall package, Batman & Robin is probably the best.

Yeah, The Adventures of Batman & Robin and Red Zone are probably two of the best answers to this question. Both games look incredible, and Batman & Robin has a really outstanding soundtrack, as well.

Well this sucks. I assumed that since elgato game capture HD said that it could capture at 240p i'd be ok...but apparently it doesn't detect 240p over component, just composite/s-video?

Damn...

Yep. This is where various Startech/Micomsoft excels at: 240p through component which most capture cards don't even do.

Yeah I should've listened to those initial recommendations. I wonder if elgato actually takes straight up returns? Should have just went with that Startech USB off the bat.

This one?

Oh yeah, now I remember that my old Roxio HD Pro capture card was able to detect 240p over component through a scart to component converter(when I tried it with SNES games), however it sees it as 720x480 and the picture looked messed up a bit plus that capture card had other problems so I don't recommend it at all.

Capture cards that do 240p over component that aren't Startech/Micomsoft are extremely rare, just as rare as today's tvs that accept 240p over component as well.

Yup, posted thread about it in main gaming, turns out to be the exact one I asked if you guys would recommend. With Dio actually having done what i'm trying to do, plus showing that people on shmups.com use it, I don't think I should have any issues with it.

I bought the Startech USB3HDCAP on Timu's recommendation, and I am a lot more satisfied with it than I was with the Elgato HD60. The Elgato didn't like my USB bus and would stutter unless I used an old version of their software. Plus, I stream a lot of PS2 games, and the Startech device has internal deinterlacing, whereas I would have to choose between combing artifacts or a halved vertical resolution with the Elgato. There are some bugs in the driver, but a custom driver fixes them.

EDIT: Nevermind, got it to download.

Eh, I don't know. It was clearly marked as blank discs, and tbh I'd like to have nice pictures on my CD-Rs for the games I will never have legitimately, instead of my terrible handwriting. And it's not like a burnt game with a Snatcher picture could ever pass as the real deal, it's just obvious when looking at the data side of the CD if the thing has been pressed or burnt.

I see it as he's enabling counterfeiters. The problem is that even if the bottom of the disc is telling, chances are you won't be able to determine this from most eBay auctions.

I'm late with this reply, but NBA Jam T.E.?

I was thinking more about Sega's first party games but this is a good one though. There was an NBA Jam for the Master System but it was axed.

Also, if anyone has interest in the upcoming vinyl releases of Shenmue & Streets of Rage from Data Discs, they announced this on their FB page.

We are also very excited to announce two more titles which, among many others, will feature in our 2016 line-up. First of all, we’ll be continuing our partnership with SEGA for a true arcade classic, OUT RUN, again sourcing the audio direct from the original arcade machine. We will also be collaborating again with Yuzo Koshiro on one of the greatest and most influential game soundtracks of all time: STREETS OF RAGE 2.

Bangin'!

Isn't the 32X After Burner actually a (pretty good) version of After Burner II? That would make it on all three platforms.

Anyone help me find this game. I think it came late in the system's life and had you trying to stay above a rising water level.

Does anyone own the Sega Trio? It's a power supply that plugs into the Genesis, 32X, and Sega CD through one outlet. I'm curious as to how the quality is.

I use the Sega Trio for a model 1 Genesis and a model 2 Sega CD. Works really well, looks great, and only takes 1/3rd the room. Dunno what else you need from a power supply.

I know that some third party power supplies aren't great for the consoles, so I just wanted to make sure the quality was there. I may end up buying one soon.

I have one. It works. They ship a shit europlug adapter though, it doesn't fit in a euro socket.

Ah, sorry, didn't realized you were looking for Sega titles specifically.

An Outrun Vinyl though... man. I don't even have a way to play records but...

Well, "dig" is probably the wrong word for him, but slowbeef is associated pretty heavily with The Immortal. His video series on it is arguably the first video Let's Play.

(Although his association with Snatcher is stronger, frankly.)

Probably the first look westerners got of Phantasy Star III, and by the time this preview reached newsstands & subscribers (EGM #11, June 1990) PS III had already been released in Japan.

We got it in summer '91, in August I believe.

yeah, i got a huge run of 91-95 EGM's a while back, still love flipping through em

also totally wanted to pick up a Nomad from a buddy/local shop but broke af still...looked into it a bit and it seems about $70 or so for the LCD mod, which feels damn near essential since everything im seeing makes the screen quality about game gear level

oh man i swear i recall this panel, after that sega visions or someone finally did a small write-up and it felt like FOREVER before it came out, haha...looking back the gap between PS2 & 3 wasn't nearly as big as it felt like as a kid

It blew my mind when I first realized that the gap between the NES and SNES, and then the gap between the SNES and N64 was only like 5 years each. Kid time just seems so much longer.

Been playing Landstalker with my gf over the last few weeks. It's a really good game! That perspective leads to some bullshit though both in general platforming and especially in the design of Greenmaze. Fuck you, Climax! It's not an easy game, though, and I've seen her die quite a few times. We've needed to explore and learn dungeons before coming back and doing them successfully. There was a jumping puzzle she gave up on and kind of tossed me the controller. Did it first try and she started crying a little out of frustration =[ These skills are a curse.

The game is also really, really long for its time, like 20+ hours.

It's funny how people compare Alundra to Zelda and never mention Landstalker. I guess it's a pretty under-appreciated game.

I need to get my hands on Castlevania Bloodlines somehow for my annual Castlevania game playthrough, but goddamn ebay prices in Canada are not feasible.

Looking to buy spare cases and for a link to print some custom covers, if anyone has resources a link or two would be uber appreciated...

On that note, I just got Mega Turrican as a trade on here, fantastic stuff.

Also incoming are Shadowrun/Rocket Knight/Rolling Thunder 2

Mega Turrican is fantastic except for not being able to shoot in all directions.

Rolling thunder 2 is must improved over the first with awesome music and a lot easier to play. Also has the best password system in place that should have been adopted by more companies.

Rocket Knight is the
tits
.

I have used the cover project before and the scans look great. Never order cases though so I can't comment.
Or cannibalize the millions of sports titles for good cases.

Edit: How do people feel about doing a monthly play through of hand picked Genesis games? Onpoint started one in the NES Appreciation Thread and there is one for the Gameboy as well. I thinks it's a great idea, anyone else?

Heh, if you think Landstalker is hard, you should try Batman on the ZX Spectrum! Less story and combat, more outright unpleasantness (and monochrome.)

damn, that's awesome man. i totally slept on it in the day - just saw someone on sega-16 did some slight mod for perspective/shadows, was thinking of patching that IPS before i finally try it one day. you gotta play the Saturn one sometime?

oh, it's not just there man - cat's outta the bag, Bloodlines is no longer cheap like anywhere

ill say this - get spare sports (non-EA) cases, and stay away from the flimsy ones someone sells on amazon.
cover project was mentioned so good luck! also i totally fucked up at first and just regular printed them all, then they looked like booty so i went to kinko's and spent a bit but now they're damn near identical.

oh! and mega turrican is indeed fantastic, props. Rolling Thunder 2 is in my personal top 10, if not 5 for the system.

*Insert my normal joke about the 32x being terrible while I watch that video.
