Presenting the most shameful EGM review of a Genesis game in history.

Large in-your-face pics so everyone remembers and know what score each Review Crew member gave Herzog Zwei.

When websites, forum posters, and anyone mention how this game got poor scores in magazine(s) back in the day, this really the only one they can actually be referring to.

EGM, in all its forms, always praised the game later many times, in print, online, etc.

I think I'll play some HZ on Genesis followed by some AirMech Arena on PS4 tonight.

Got Forgotten Worlds in the mail - can't play it though because the cheapy repro system I have has 6 button controllers and apparently that makes the game crash. Ugh.

Try plugging in a 3-button controller if there are ports for it and start a 2-player game from there and let one of the players die. That's how I got it to work on a Nomad as the game ignores the mode button.

Same here.

Anyway, the main Genesis coverage from EGM #10 - May 1990.

That reminds me, from the same issue:

Neither issue had FF V in the Future Play column? Darn :/
That's all I really wanted, ah well!

I always heard the Master System one was the crap one and the Game Gear version the one to get.

Never played it myself.

Oh wow! I didn't realise the MS and GG version were different games. I've never played the GG version either (the graphics look cool)

As far as comparisons between the MSand MD versions go, the MS version contains slightly more RPG elements. You have free reign over the missions you choose to complete, and the points you earn from each one have to be spent rearming/repairing your craft and saved to unlock the final mission, which is a nice mechanic that helps break up the relentless destroy 10 planes/ destroy 15 bases etc. I also find the general aiming/shooting mechanics to feel a bit more solid on the MS as well.

Plus, the master system has boss fights. How can you compete with a steel missile-lobbing Hot Air Baloon?

gorgeous copy of Kolibri (arguably the greatest hummingbird simulator of all time) - i really gotta give that a go again one day, couldn't sort out what to do. it's harder cause i opted not to leave my 32X plugged in (for wanting to play SMS stuff more often), but on assembler i'm reading a thread about a possible mod to allow both! i'd love to just leave the mushroom up there & play whatever.

Anyone purchase high quality replacement cartridge sticker game labels online? Where from? I have a couple used games I would like to replace their labels which the sticker on some are in poor shape.

Thanks guys. I found out a couple of video reviews on YT and they seem pretty safe, in terms of reliability. I was a bit worried by the fact these power supplies could harm/damage my NTSC consoles, since they don't even need a stepdown converter, but the manufacturer himself told me it's a different technology, using 'switching power supplies, as they are lightier, less expensive, regulated and take less place'. I'll get one myself too.
.

Got mine yesterday and tried it for a bit. Picture seemed fine, and nothing got damaged. Recommended!

Couldn't agree more. I'll both replace two power bricks and free two stepdown converters in one shot. It couldn't get more convenient than that.
Also, yeah, the fact that IQ doesn't take any hit is the ultimate selling point for me (there is a flattering review on VideogamePerfection, specific to Retro Game Supply's product).
I doubt it will help with the Mega Drive 2 notorious (at least on JP systems) buzz, but it's not a huge deal as far as I'm concerned.

Pyron produced another video showcasing his palette hacks

Regardless what you think of the changes, it's very interesting to see just how wasteful the palette use is in a lot of these ports (which seem to have been handled by automated conversion tools rather than by hand) with lots of repeated colors taking up different slots. Like in the horizon in the TMNT ocean stage for example.

I think this kind of mismanagement was so widespread that it made the system's color limitations look significantly worse than it really was.

hated genesis strider bc of the audio.

Funny, it's the opposite for me!
I think the Genesis FM soundtrack is actually better than the arcade's despite being technically simpler.
No contest on missing samples, but they had to save space even in the biggest at that time cart. :)

Hopefully EGM #13 - August 1990 will be available soon. That's the Strider issue.

I remember getting this issue in the mail when it came out. Besides listing Strider as a 6 meg game (not yet 8 meg) in the full page preview, I was really impressed with all the other MD/Genesos games shown, a number of which never got released at all, anywhere.

What did Heavy Unit turn out to be?

Heavy Unit was an arcade game by Taito in 1988, and only in recent years did it become playable via emulation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OQlu4Nq4m8

The PC Engine got a conversion in 1989. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eyZvvVQMvQ
MD got Heavy Unit Mega Drive Special in 1990. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7CgBhCXm10

Coin-op arcade machine flyers, materials, PCB and console version box shots:

Edit:

Downloaded a bunch of random Genesis roms. I saw one called Hercules. I thought it was the bootleg based on the PSX Disney licensed game that was briefly reviewed by Jontron. I loaded it up and it turns out it was an entirely different game called Dahna Megami Tenjo.

256px-Dahna_Megami_Tanj%C5%8D_(box_art).jpg

A Japanese-only action/platformer that I never heard of before and I don't think anyone here is aware of it (maybe). I tried it and got maybe half way into it so far. The biggest problem it has is that the hit-detection with your weapon is a little suspect. It feels like you just hammer away and hope they get hit. But the health is pretty generous and you can get used to it.

It has a lot of interesting set pieces. First level has you riding an Orgre and easily killing soliders:

maxresdefault.jpg

This thing is a boss:

235111-dahna-megami-tanjo-genesis-screenshot-stage-3-boss-a-knight.png

And there's a shmup level:

235114-dahna-megami-tanjo-genesis-screenshot-stage-four-dahna-flies.png

Apologies for the screenshots, I tried to take a couple in Fusion but I screwed up.

All of this happens in the first 15-20 minutes of the game...

I'm really digging it and am going to try to beat it by tomorrow. I'm not suggesting it's a lost masterpiece or anything but it's a fun little imperfect game that has a lot of ideas and ambition.

I've heard of Dahna Megami Tenjo and played the ROM a few times in the early 2000s. I wanted to play it because of this preview in EGM from '91 or '92:

I recall scoffing at these when you posted them in the thread in the past, but since I got my Mega Everdrive and was looking over hacks to try on real hardware, I have to admit that learning some of the palette hacks are intended to make some ports look more like their arcade originals makes me a little less disdainful of them. Some actually look pretty authentic!

(...but I'm still not really convinced the Castlevania Bloodlines one is particularly worthwhile.)

reading the strider issue back then, i always compared the genesis photos w/ the super grafx strider ads posts by import game stores. remember foggy details of talk about the limited platette colors avail on the genesis vs. super grafx...
always curious which version was better.

man, that turbo Strider game has an extra level but having finally played it, it's not nearly as good

also got to play the arcade one a year ago, and it's fantastic but only rebuffed how good a port the genny one is for me!

i was amazed by the graphics though. 8 MEGA cart =)

seriously - so in the days before blockbuster, one of those mom & pop video stores (you know, the ones that had that interesting section separated by beads that you couldn't go into as a kid, haha) had an odd 1 for 1 trading thing for well-kept games they didn't have, or at least that's what the owner offered me, maybe since we frequented so often.

i'll never forget trading Zoom! and Buster Douglas (a young Ninja did not choose his games wisely, even the free ones sega offered) for the two most exciting ones in game mags the last few months: ESWAT & Strider! going home, it felt like a little christmas - you know when you're so happy, you play one game a few levels, stop & play another, go back & forth and can't decide what to stick with since you're enjoying it all so much? that was that day!

I do that now, one of the joys of missing out on older consoles and exploring the library deeper. I have the underwhelming current generation of games to thank for that.

Haha yeah, outside of some Nintendo, Souls-games and some indies, there is almost nothing for me now - which just means there is so much more time to explore the old awesomeness - like we do in this and the other appreciation-threads!

Love the Genesis version of Strider (despite the horrible cover art) - I remember that it was a really expensive cart when it came out, I wanna say like $75. But the mom and pop store I rented from was cool in that you could buy games that you rented. So basically I kept renting it until I had most of it paid off and then gave the guy a few more bucks to keep it. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for the cart now.

lol, really? Peter is by far the most OP character in the whole game, it seems kind of obvious right from the start no?

see at first he was just kinda trailing along, i couldn't control him so he'd rarely attack...after that i guess i just took him for another mascot character? or assumed his damage (which was solid!) would trail off later...instead you get a guy with high def, high attack, can move damn near wherever, rez's himself & takes like half damage from blaze. man, i haven't been this wrong since benching Zylo (post promotion) in SF1!

Haha, to be honest I was annoyed by Peter at first because when you can't control him early on, he'd steal XP meant to my other party members all the time! xD

And last but not least... (drum roll....)

9zVMDLn.jpg

Reportedly, as I mentioned, Strider on Genesis/MD was 6-megabits, at this point. Probably around the beginning of summer (given magazine lead times, Chicago CES being in June, etc), before it was finished,

Oh and there's Sega's then-future mascot (he got shown twice this issue).

Just got the 2-in-1 (I don't plan to get a 32X, so I went for a Mega Drive 2 + Mega-CD model) power supply in the mail, and ran a quick test. Everything's working fine, I'm SO pleased.
Surely not the best looking piece of hardware I've ever seen :D but nonetheless a true blessing, in terms of convenience and space-saving.
