Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

A few pages ago we were discussing palette hacks for the Genesis. Well, I tried one out for the first time earlier: Captain America and the Avengers.

I played a bunch of this on Saturday before seeing Civil War, but just noticed today that there was a palette recolour patch available.

I only had the chance to try it for a few minutes, but man, it looks so much better than the original Genesis release. I need to "Git Gud" at this game, I got pretty far on the weekend before hitting game over.

Very interesting, I never thought of this, but yeah, it does make sense for sure. Would be interesting to know why they eventually changed it up.

Yeah.

While I'm not saying Jewel Master was originally going to be Altered Beast 2 for sure, no doubt there are some holes in that theory, ones I'm probably not aware of. Though indeed, it would be interesting to find out from the people at Sega that worked on the arcade and MD versions of Altered Beast, and whoever worked on Jewel Master, if there's any connection, and if an Altered Beast sequel was actually planned.

Somebody should ask Greg Sewart, Jeremy Parish or another of the gaming historians with connections in the industry. I think your theory totally makes sense, but would be nice to get both a confirmation and some more of the backstory behind the change.

Somebody please do, I'd love to know.

JP Alisia Dragoon really shot up in price over the years hasn't it? Been meaning to get it specifically for the awesome boxart for a while now, but I'll have to wait out till it can be had for something more reasonable (and surprisingly it can, just have to be patient).

This weekend I'll fire up the Genny and play Streets of Rage 1 (for the first time ever), and Burning Force; two games I managed to snag at a local retro game store a few months back!

Kangeeoos are really annoying, but if you shoot the flying babies they drop health packs.

Yeah I'm gonna give it another go tomorrow.

On that note, I've started to use walk through maps at parts for Shining in the Darkness. Not 100%, but my cartography skills kinda suck lol.

Edit: Wtf the water is alive!

I incidentally just received this in the mail:

This was fantastic, as a huge fan of the series. Of course, he is totally right about the spin-offs. Still, i subscribed to him after watching this, i'm excited to dig into his other stuff.

Edit: Also, i will always argue that Eternal Champions deserved better

Eternal Champions is definitely the most deserving of a Killer Instinct style reboot. Even when the whole "warriors from different eras face off" premise wasn't that original (several other fighting games at the time were doing it), they still managed to get a cast of characters that felt so much fresher than all the other SF-derivatives on the market. Xavier remains one of my all time fav fighting game characters.

I also have an immense appreciation for the craftmanship that went into the visuals. It probably owes a lot to being designed natively for the system and not diminished assets from an arcade original. EC stands alongside the Genesis port of Samurai Shodown as the best looking fighters on a 16-bit system.

Everytime you get back to SiTD Tekno, I feel guilt for having abandoned it. Maybe this weekend... My wife is out of the house most of Saturday for a Baby Shower, I could get a couple hours in.

Latest acquisitions. Guess I was in the mood for some good old fashioned warfare. The Contra actually has the Japanese version in it. I would say that I was yet again duped, but I suck at Contra (though I love the games) so I welcome the easier path. I got the MD version of Rambo III because it was a lot cheaper. Apparently Europeans hate freedom ;)

EDIT: Whoops, double post, sorry!

So I'm looking to replace a broken rubber conductive pad in my 6-Button Genesis Controller (The "B Button" pad popped out!). I found some replacement pads on www.nintendorepairhut.com for $2, which is perfect, but the shipping is $10 USD to Canada! Does anyone know where I might be able to get something a little cheaper?

I was thinking of buying one of the super cheap Chinese knock off controllers from Aliexpress, and just swapping the rubber piece from that into my OEM controller. Does anyone know if I'd be able to do this?

Gentle reminder for those that may have missed it.

most rightfully do, but there's a place in my heart for bad 80s/90s americanization cover art, like the TG16 was ripe with

then again, i think the cover to SMS pro wrestling belongs in a museum

Ha ha, that Pro Wrestling, I'd love to know what they were thinking with that one...

Americanized boxart would drive me up the wall as a kid that loved to draw. Even Sonic the Hedgehog was under my microscope questioning why his quills looked like they where pasted on his body yet, in-game (especially the ending poses), they were a part of his whole body? And WHY DOES TAILS HAVE EYEBROWS?!?!?! Besides bundled Mario games and Super Metroid, would you be surprised to know this was also what led me to picking a SNES over a 32X? Guess I couldn't stand censorship even as a kid. ^_^;;;

As for the vote, I go with Quack Shot since....that's one I own ^_-

You don't like censorship so you go with Nintendo? eh

Ha ha, crap, I totally walked right into that one (considering Nintendo's history and especially how relevant this is concerning their questionable localizations lately). That was bad wording on my part. I had a grass is greener view as far as how they treated their first party games' artwork going by the NES and the Game Boy. What you see on the box or in the manual, was usually mirrored in what you saw in-game. And as kid that liked to draw when staying at my Grandmother's house, I LOVE LOVE LOVED when this happened. Gave me more to go on than just the sprites alone. Looking back now it's pretty silly of course, and I'd still get games if they were good, it was just that little detail I particularly looked out for. And for the record of this thread, that last post made it sound like I dumped Genesis for SNES, but I loved both systems VERY equally. I wanted the best of both worlds, and that's when I took the plunge on the SNES side. ^_^;

If you were born 10 years earlier you would have hated the 2600 and Intelivison box art.

Actually one of the requirements Activision had when they split from Atari was to have box illustrations that actually represented the game. And the cartridges had a real screenshot on them too.

Unlike Atari, who apparently gave their illustrator complete freedom to do whatever:

Yeah, I'm totally a space engineer when I code in BASIC on the VCS, Atari.

yep, that was one of the problem the programmers had with Atari, along with more recognition of their work. When they made Activision, they wanted to have the consumer to be able to know about the game by just looking at the cover. Originally the programmers wanted a pixel-perfect rendition of their game, and the marketing department made it so that it was less pixelly but still recognisable.

It's actually the last question on this presentation:

It's a fascinating story, how Pitfall was made and I highly recommend a full watch.
