Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Anyone ever play, Man Overboard! S.S Lucifer? I played a couple of levels and it seems like a March of the Minis type game, way before that game came out. Didn't know there was a game similar to that, especially 10 years earlier on the Mega Drive.

I've actually always been interested in that game, ever since i saw it in my collection app. Codemasters can be hit or miss, but it looked like it could be fun.

Also, anyone want to go Genesis crazy and pay at least a grand for Outback Joey?

Just realized that the weapon shop owner in Shining in the Darkness, is the same guy from Golden Axe, Gilius Thunderhead.

He's one of the judges at the end of the Arcade version of Alien Storm

I gotta say, the Mega Everdrive is quickly turning out to be one of the best gaming purchases I have ever made. Been spending countless hours on it since I received mine on Saturday.

Congrats on picking up the greatest console ever made. The scientists over at Sega really outdid themselves back then.

Hoping I can hand my thesis in within the next 5 days and just squeak in to record some Alien Storm with my new capture card before the end of the month. Fingers crossed!

you're on Peagles! good luck with the paper and don't rush just to beat me =) heheh

Haha, nah it'll be good motivation to stop procrastinating!

Edit: Yeh Tek, I'm gonna start a channel when I'm done studying, been waiting a long time for some free time to do so.

Only problem is my job means I probably shouldn't identify myself online... Might have to keep it to footage and text only...

Got the Lion King on Genesis and played through it last night. It was tougher than I remember in parts, but I made it through. Fun game!

How do you find it compares to real Genesis/Saturn controllers? The d-pad, buttons, etc.?

It's a piece of shit. It's the same controller as the Chinese knock offs. This is a video collection of the official USB Saturn controllers (out of stock since 2007 or something) and he has some words about Chinese knock offs at the end of the video, including the PlaySega one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVARQgg8CGs

I would know, I have one.

Mail call of a couple of arcade conversions.

After Burner II is an early release and not as good than the CD version, but the soundtrack is still pretty dope and it's fun to blow shit up qt high speeds.

Super Smash TV suffers from not having enough buttons as per the 3 button controller. They try to overcome it by allowing the use of 2 controllers at once, but it never feels quite as good as the SNES version. But it's still fun mindless ultraviolence, and this is seriously the most mint used game I have ever bought. I don't think the manual has ever been opened.

So I found a great looking copy of Super Hang On. Perfect case, manual, and cart.

The cart wont boot for anything... Tried deep cleaning with brasso, alcohol, etc, same things I used to resurrect a beat up Batman and Robin awhile back...and nothing.

It seems legit as well...but think it could be a capacitor problem? The board itself looks great too...so im at a loss.

This Is Sega Test - 1996 Sega Game Tester Training Video:

A training video Sega put out in 1996 for rookie video game testers has been released to the internet at large by the production company behind it, Green Mill Filmworks.

The 28-minute "trainumentary" was filmed at Sega of America's office in Redwood City, California and boy does it capture life in the 90s.

It makes Sega of America seem like a fairly grueling place to work with hours ranging from a reasonable 40 to multiple claims of 90 or more, though you might not notice between the butt rock music and MTV editing designed to get new recruits pumped about their new gig.

Same thing happened to me when I purchased a Taz game from my local pawn shop.

Absolutely grade A, 100% condition to everything and yet it would absolutely not boot no matter what I tried. It was really disappointing given the condition of the cart, manual and box but hey. It was only €2.

Oh come on, it's not that bad. The body is very plastic-y and build quality doesn't compare to modern controllers, but it's fine for its purpose. Never had a Saturn, but compared to the MD controller, main difference is that buttons feel a bit more clicky. Texture is very similar otherwise. Perhaps there are better Saturn/MD controller clones, but for 9€ + shipping I'm quite happy with this one. If only for the better d-pad and the concave buttons, I very much prefer it to the 360 controller I used before.

The DPad is terrible. Its unresponsive and sluggish. Face Buttons are not that good either. Its worse than a regular 360 controller to me - dpad is equally bad, face buttons are worse. I would totally listen to a "you probably just got a bad one!" argument, but they're all the same and they come from the same Chinese factories. It is what it is.

I find my Transforming DPad 360 controller is better than it.

Are the SLS controllers compatible with regular Saturn pad parts? Could you take a JP Saturn controller and mix and match?

As far as I know, they're pretty similar on the inside. There's a thread on Shoryuken in which some dude compares the insides of them and says that you can replace activation rubbers and things like that, but there's something different about the triggers.

Obviously the board is different - (I imagine) it's not like they just soldered a USB cable on a regular Saturn controller board.

So played a little of Streets of Rage this morning. I think the game still holds up well coming from playing 2 & 3 first. Got up to the 4th Stage (that 2nd Stage Boss, Souther took quite a bit of my continues @_@). The compositions are just so classic! And that Boss theme! OMG! So awesome! Just like the successors to this game, my PC speakers were in for a workout (Logitech Z130). I dare not hook up my Logitech Z-2300 with it's subwoofer on max in this apartment....don't think it could handle it! ^_^;

I'm sure these have been posted quite a bit by now in this thread alone but....let me just acknowledge the awesomeness I absorbed for the first time here. ^_-

Stage 1 (The inaugural stage theme in the series still gets me pumped)

Stage 2(Nice somber tune to bring us down a bit after the last stage's track, reminding us of the general atmosphere and stage's backdrop)

Stage 3 (Splash some water on your face after that last Boss fight! Time for a beach side rave!)

Stage 4 (I've heard it remixed quite a bit, but the original's still got it!)

Boss Theme (Get yourself...ready for a FIGHT!)

I'll try to progress a bit further next time! :)

Hasta la vista baby! T2 is a top 5 movie for me and the game feeds the need of fufulling my love of cheeseball 90s digitized graphics.

Streets of rage is the first game I ever listened to the soundtrack outside of playing the game. I remember piping it into the line in on my computer and ripping the intro music to SoR2.

Growing up a genesis kid was great.

T2 is the first movie I ever bought on DVD. I thought it was fitting to be the first Bluray I ever bought as well. I'm hoping itll be my first 4k purchase to keep this train rolling.
