Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Well I got to the final stage in Alien Storm and then promptly died. Was playing as the robot character and found it difficult to not get attacked during bosses. Some long-range attacks would be nice :p (unless I'm missing something).

You just need to be really good with the dodge roll, i've found

I was actually thinking of this one too for the last few days, but couldn't bother to make the post. So let me do that for you then:

I'd like to nominate Quackshot!

If we could do a shortish rpg, then I would be ready for that. Btw, can i nominate Dynamite Headdy?

howlongtobeat says about 20 hours, is that too long you think?
i don't see why not @ Headdy!

haha nice! maybe ill finally finish that one

nice! do losing games get recirculated in later months, or do you try to shuffle them around a bit?

They can get voted on just not the following month. We'll give it a 1 month breather. This way we don't have the same games being nominated month to month. You want to pick something that lost instead?

nah, we've had some interesting contenders lose though, just wanted to know! i'll go for Shadowrun but it's not likely up against Quackshot, and i don't know how many on here have that game or wanna play it...but that's my choice, and i'll nom it every other month till the time's right, haha!

really think this game club as a way to finally figure out certain games together could be cool. i really do wanna learn Gain Ground, Herzog Zwei etc eventually! but Shadowrun first

I think more people will go for it in the Winter if this club is still cruising then. Everyone seems busier now, but who knows.

I just gotta say how glad I am that we've got these game of the month clubs. Not only to spur more discussion about the deeper parts of the games, but just explore the libraries of the systems beyond stuff we even know.

Eighteen years ago the planet Nebula was attacked by the Lone Star System, arch enemy of the Interplanetary Federation. Its population decimated, the few survivors swore to protect its future with their lives. That time has come. Docked in the space portal of the planet Nebula, sits the combat weapon fortress Plealos, mother ship of the Lone System's fleet. What she can't take, she'll destroy. Now's your opportunity to use your sophisticated combat skills and save your planet. You're Ryder Jupiter. Known as Ace to the Federation, you've got vengeance on your mind. And the only person you trust in battle is the faithful Diana Rean, a bold determined comrade. What brings you together is the tyrant Reficul, Emperor of Lone. His plans to dominate Nebula can only be thwarted with the power of Thunder Force II which must be jettison deep below the planet's surface to Plealos for the final confrontation. Here you'll rely on the molecular Excelizer, a blast so strong it leaves nothing behind but memories. Go forth brave one, and free the entire Federation of Reficul forever.

Team up with spell casting mages, wire-headed deckers, or mythic orcs and trolls of the distant past. Take on a variety of shadowruns including: Cleaning up the streets, jacking into the Matrix for a big time cyber-heist or pulling off a risky "Corporate Extraction." Always wanted to play Gain Ground when I found out about the story, maybe this is my excuse to pick it up. But, Quack Shot is up there so... yeah, nothing stands a chance against the duck.

Easily the toughest month for me. The only game I wouldn't vote for is Gain Ground, as I'd assume the System 24 version is better.

Thunderforce 2, Dynamite Headdy, Quack Shot, and Shadowrun are all games that I haven't played through and would like to start, though.

All great games this month, and I also own 4 out of 5 here for once, which is nice for my wallet. Anyways, Quackshot is the only one I have completed, so that disqualifies that one for me, even though it is a pretty good game. In the end, I have to go with my own nominee, Dynamite Headdy since its a Treasure-game I havent played, and since that gif just makes it look so damn amazing.

Fantastic choices this month! It's incredibly hard for me to break this tie, so I might have to go with the one I know least about: Shadowrun. If I was going to vote purely on nostalgia, Quackshot has a really special place in my heart. I feel it's pretty underrated among SEGA's incredible library of Disney licensed games.

Shadowrun is great. It was "open world" before that was even a thing. Its also legit 40-80 hours, so I'm not too interested in replaying it (it is rather grindy).

To be fair, I've not been totally on top of the games so far (didn't get to ESWAT and only finished RoS on the last day).

The only one on that list I've never finished is Dynamite Headdy.

Safely scratch that one for me then

Don't get me wrong...its a great game. just make sure you have the time to play it when you do (which I'm gathering is why you maybe don't want to for next month, and not necessarily any direct knock against it...at least I'm hoping. It really is legit good).

Are you thinking of a different game? https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=8364 Says 15- 20 hours

No I'm not. I did kill a lot of ghouls, though. It's been a fair amount of time since I played through it...I don't doubt it can be beat in 20 hours...but If its your first time through, and you don't gamefaqs yourself, and you try to be as complete and explore as much as possible you can get a good chunk more than that out of it.

Figured I would post this on here in case anyone is looking.

My battery died in the sega cd (model 2) so I could no longer save to the cd side backup ram. Pretty simple change. I removed the old battery and then soldered lines off the motherboard to a CR2032 vertical holder. By doing this it keeps it outside of the RF shielding, so next time the battery dies I can just open the system and swap instead of having to remove all the shielding. I used a rechargeable 2032 instead of the stock 2016 that was in it, figure it will give me longer charge time. There was corrosion under the old battery, so not a bad idea to replace it. I left the system on for like 6 hours to recharge the battery after replacement.

But should it be Dynamite Headdy or Dynamite Headdy though? The Western port got absolutely butchered during the localisation process, all the story got excised, many sprites were altered and the difficulty was noticeably increased. There is a translation patch to allow to play the original version with english texts.

yup, if this game wins i'm totally playing that version

haha maybe we should do a month with only rarer picks? like this list, but no disney stuff or something...i mean honestly, i love so many games that'd prolly get slaughtered if Castle of Illusion of Aladdin was up there
=) a shooter! something i can handle for the game of the month =)

damn, for real? maybe i picked the wrong game here, haha...just thought the only way i'm surviving those early hours is with a guide, or others playing!

Maybe he is thinking about the Snes-version which is completely different?

was always curious about that one too, i recall it looking more isometric than top-down though

This is awesome, and also quite terrifying... :D
I mean, I realized there must have been some sort of battery inside the Mega-CD (I have a Japanese Mega-CD 2), the day I first tried to boot up Prince of Persia, and the game wouldn't even load, if the full system backup memory wasn't entirely available. Then I noticed how Sonic CD did actually save something too, straight to the console. But I didn't worry too much about it, assuming it could've been something recently replaced and easily removeable (as it happens with the Saturn). Now, to know that the battery is soldered to the motherboard itself... Eeesh, it's not a nice feeling.

Yeah they were much nicer about it with the Saturn where you just pop it out through the access door. Honestly its a super easy removal, just 3 small spots. My backup ram still worked, but as soon as the system was off for a couple hours the ram would erase, so if you have a backup cartridge you could move it over before turning off the system, then move it back when you power on next time. Just kinda of a pain in the butt to do every time.
