Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Morfeo

The Chuck Norris of Peace
Just in the nick of time at the end of the month...

I decided to play the game on Easy (Normal Energy though), and was able to breeze through it. Surprised at how close I was to the end on my last run, and that the final boss is in a shoot-em-up section... I most likely would be able to beat it again if I ran through on Normal.

Great game, just a classic Sega action title doing what Nintendon't. I love how crunchy the FM music is, even on a Model 1.

Any tips? I managed to get there, but it was just barely.

i forget, but i know there's (relatively) easier paths in the last stage

Try left, right, left, right, middle, left. I watched a video because I couldn't find a walkthrough that had an easier path.

The path I took was Left Left Left, which lead to the final boss. I think the final gauntlet might be shorter on Easy though.

Thanks! Not sure if Im more or less confused now though, but will try again tonight since its the last day of may and all :)

So i went to Galloping Ghosts over the past weekend well i was in Chicago, and since i didn't have time to beat it at home, well...

I have to say, i'm not sure which version i like better. I think the Genesis version has a bit tighter pacing, but having 3-player support was great, and it did sound and look a bit nicer as well. My girlfriend and my friend i was with enjoyed it, though it wasn't the best game we played that day, but a nice romp, and they both agreed it was better then Golden Axe 1, so i felt that was a success in its own right.

I've never seen those 2 games in the same cab before. I wonder what other freaks of nature are out there.

Galloping Ghosts has a lot of custom cabs to save on space. They have Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder and Golden Axe: The Duel on the same cab too. They just have little switches on the cabinets you flick to switch games

Oh, if you want a picture dump and a whole crapton of reasons to go, i've got them for you. I got 2 words for you: Galaxy Force : )

oh god, dying to play revenge of death adder! and those custom cab things sound like kinda neat ideas, hopefully it's a salvage op and not too much original stuff is lost in the process

Ok, you seem interested. Here are pics on why you need to hit up Galloping Ghosts, should you be in the Chicago Area:

This only covers the Sega stuff. Also, the game next to Trog is Arabian Fight, which was never released here, and much like Death Adder, was left to arcades only. It was obscure enough, even i didn't know it (shame on me)

I spent the last half hour meticulously cleaning my controller, as I had problems with it registering directions in Ms. Pac Man. Then I realised the 6 button controller was incompatible with this game. Oh well, at least I have a clean controller now.

haha, i feel like we've all been through this, with this exact game, at some point in this thread

Can someone confirm that Stormlord doesn't like the 6 button controller, specifically the C button to jump? It jumps fine with A, but not C for some reason here.
I now have an extra clean C button.

Mine had the same issues, so yeah, it seems likely

Ok that's good to know. I thought that button had worn out, especially as it's the one I use the most.

Related question, what do you guys prefer as a configuration for platformers? I'm so used to C=jump, B=action, A=special that I feel completely lost when a game does it differently and doesn't allow remapping.

That's my configuration as well!!!

God a serious nerdgasm out of those arcade pics. Not even back in the day was there anything even resembling that close to where I live.

Anyways, I just got this:

Managed to beat it on easy on my fourth try overall, with the red strong dude. The game is overall pretty easy (on easy), but there are some chokepoints where i just dont know how to avoid taking a ton of damage, like on the bosses, and during the final dungeon, and since the energy and health refills are so spare, this eventually drains my health, and on the final boss i was always at the last credit with not much health left. But yeah, I guess i did it. Need to do the robot and girl as well before checking out normal! Cool game, and my first one beaten during the Sega Game Club!

Normal and Hard would be hell but congrats still.

Yeah, Im not touching hard lol. Im sure you on the other hand did it on one credit at hard?
Ha, ha I wish, I had to use a few credits. If the game had a bit more health items and no persistent health it would had been easily doable.

March Game of the Month
April Game of the Month
May Game of the Month

One month cool down on the following games

*Thunder Force 2
*Dynamite Headdy
*Gain Ground
*Shadow Run

Sega Genesis Club Guidelines

The nominated title should be readily available via standard
channels such as eBay, for a reasonable price (Maximum $30,
preferably less to give the majority of people a chance to join
in). The title should be a licensed Genesis/Megadrive title (No hacks,
homebrew, multicarts). Only exception is unlicensed, but readily available titles.
The title should be available in English, and if not, it should at the very least be
playable without knowledge of Japanese.

Due to the nature of the Club, excessively long or grind-heavy
games such as RPGs will be excluded.

Selection Process (see above)
The first week of each month, the selection process for the following
month commences. The first five games suggested that have not
yet been played, and were not nominated the month before will be
added to the list and will be voted on. So be sure to come in early to
nominate your favorites!

On the 7th day of the month, or when we reach five nominations (whichever comes
first) the nominations are tallied in the following manner:
The list of nominees are checked for infringements of the above
guidelines, and any not meeting the requirements are removed.
The voting list will be shuffled for each member voting.
Voting will take place until the 20th day of the month, at which point the poll will
close and the votes will be tallied.
The winner will be announced as soon as the tally is counted so that members
will have time to pick up the winning game.

YO I AM READY FOR SOME QUACKSHOT.

Also, never forget this was only one of 2 games that starred Donald on the Sega Genesis...

That's some motivation to finally get to the end of this magnificent game!

As a side note, It's one of the few game for which I greatly prefer the western cover art. It conveys a sense of adventures and mysteries, danger in exotic lands. The Japanese cover is more a happy-go-lucky "let's go on an adventure yippee!". The "Kirby frown" is deserved here.

The Japanese, European and American cartridges contain the same ROM. That means no region lock, every cartridge work on every console. Japanese consoles will get the story in Japanese though. PAL gamers can flick their 50/60Hz switch to play it at the proper speed.

that's some deep thought on cover art right there =D
