Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I don't know about the title change, but just wanted apologize for the confusion. I just simple don't have the time to assemble a game of the month at this point. Maybe I put too much into it, but it seemed the time spent wasn't worth it, because not many people jumped in. I tried to make it as flashy as possible to get more interested, but that didn't seem to work and in the end I just burnt my self out. Just wasn't having fun and thats what its all about. You can all hate me now.

Jake, no worries, you're still aces in my book.

I'm contemplating starting shining in the darkness. I don't have a physical copy and I already way blew my budget but I have it on steam and in the sonic genesis collection on ps3. Is the game all 3d dungeons like Phantasy Star dungeons?

Yup. It's actually one big dungeon, with multiple levels. You can enter/exit the dungeon and visit town, which allows you to buy/sell items, weapons and armour, as well as visit the tavern and castle for some dialogue pertaining to what your current mission is.

The game's fun, if a bit basic. There's no map function, so be prepared to bust out the graph paper, or download maps online. If you're just following a map online, be warned that you'll probably have to spend some time grinding. If you're exploring every nook and cranny, you'll usually be pretty well leveled for success.

I think I'll fire it up tonight. I gotta admit I'm not a huge fan of the dungeons in Phantasy Star. I will def be downloading a map.

I was playing a bit of Batman Returns, that game has so many damn unavoidable cheap hits it's unbelievable. Batman is so damn sluggish too. Ugh. If I get good enough at the game I'll move over to the Sega CD version which adds somewhat fun car sections.

So because of the misunderstanding about what month was what game and me thinking Shining in the Darkness was last month's game, I've now finished SitD. I did do it in less than a month total.

I'm using up the last of my vacation time this week, so I've been able to hunker down and really play last couple days.

I also did have to start over because I had put about 2 hours or so (the time it takes to start and get your party), and then messed up saving on the everdrive (forgot to reset). So I had to start over from the beginning.

There is a spell that lets you see the part of the map you have explored though, so i am just using that at like every 20 steps or so. So far I have been constantly overleveled though, since i explore everything. Chests is so not worth it in this game :(

Congrats! I hope to join you in a few weeks as well. Cant rush through it, as its a bit to basic for that. We should definitely do Shining Force later!

Congrats. I have a three day weekend coming up so I might plow through it. I've put a lot of time into it already. I'm at level 17 and have cleared the first two trials. For as much as I didn't like the dungeons in Phantasy Star 1 when I played though it, these aren't bothering me much. I have resorted to using maps after I got lost for about half an hour at first. It does show it's age but it's fine to play and grind away while I have some youtube playing.

I've beaten Shining Force, it's a great game. It's probably kind of pricey now days.

Just completed the second trial cave in Shining in the Darkness. This game seems a bit to easy so far, with all the wandering at least i get a too high level most of the time, making the enemies a joke so far.

Another clueless localization?

lol, i picked a random character from bloodlines =)

she's a vampire.
from the wiki:
Japanese Nameエリザベート・バートリー
Erizabēto Bātorī (Erzsébet Báthory)

apparently she was going to be in SOTN
—Please tell us about any events, ideas, or characters that had to be cut from Symphony of the Night. Also, if there’s any post-game story for Richter, Maria, or Alucard, please share that too.

Igarashi: As far as the story goes, I did have deeper and more involved dialogue planned, but I thought it would interrupt the game progression too much, so we took it out. There were many characters who had to be cut, but the ones I still wish we could have added were Elizabeth Bathory

It never gets too difficult although some of the random one hit kill spells can be annoying later on. I used a map and still never had to grind any. Oh yeah, i beat the game already, lol. I'm actually really interested in playing a more modern dungeon crawler, I enjoyed this game quite a bit. I have Legend of Grimrock on steam, I should fire that thing up!

Congrats! I just completed the third trial cave. Been to Paris for four days so havent been playing during that time. I agree its fun, although a bit repetitive. Definitely interested in a more modern game in this genre as well, maybe i have to pick up one of the Etrian Odyssey-games.

yeah, congrats on that - i don't know how many others have finished Shining in the Darkness!

if you want a not-so-modern one, Shining: the Holy Ark is fantastic!

I don't think I can afford to play Saturn games. lol

Nice! I actually own it, but want to do the Shining-series in order now that Ive started with Darkness. So might get to it in like 5 years I guess.
My next one will probably be Shining Force CD. I'm either going to play through that or Lunar 2 over the Christmas holidays while I'm off work.

Shining Force CD is so good, loved that package

and if you're doing them in order, i forget exactly where but Darkness was the first released, but not the first chapter! i know CD comes between 1 & 2 (and is missing a japanese game gear title that really links them), while Ark should totally be done before III scenario 1.

Grimrock is pretty great, but its sequel is even better (if you have it).

Its a little different, though. Grimrock is a real-time combat dungeon crawler...like Eye of the Beholder was.

Yeah, I was reading about it. My guess is that the translator had never heard of Bathory and had their best guess at a supposedly badly japanised English name. Bartley, smh

Damn, I wish I'd never sold my MegaDrive so I could participate playing my most beloved RPG of that time. I really hope Shining in the Darkness will be available as VC on Switch...

I stopped when the game made me
walk on the ceiling
. I just couldn't map anything and spent hours running in circles.

aw man, i know it was tricky but you gotta get back to it...use the net if you gotta!

What's the latest on Project Y?

IpDAgCi.gif

we got a "teaser" of a few seconds with no gameplay, and talk of a full trailer one day. there was drama cause fonzie lost the board to an airport or something but now i think it's okay & he's just back to, you know, never telling fans shit over the years.

if this turns out to be the greatest beat-em-up of all time i'm still never crowdfunding shit for them again, this lack of any communication is not okay.

Nice! Be sure to write down your thoughts in the Sega CD-thread.

Im probably just doing it in release order, as i usually prefer that to "canon" chronological order. Isnt the Game Gear-titles in Shining CD though?

yes and no! you get 2 game gear titles on there, plus a cool CD-only 3rd quest (4th one is boss rush mode if you unlock it), but there was one chapter we didn't get that involves a dark priestess who i believe goes on to mother the main baddie from SiTD.

This sucks to hear :( I really hate how random localization was back then.

Just so you know guys, Beggar Prince should start shipping next week. It's still available to order, but as usual you may not wait too long before ordering your copy. We don't know how many they have made nor if they plan to make another batch after this one. Given it's the fourth batch already, It may very well be the last one.

Also the "Tanglewood" kickstarter is in it's final hours for people that are interested. Probably will not reach the "Dreamcast HD" stretch goal, but already passed the one for a normal Dreamcast release though.

Edit: Or it hasn't reached the normal Dreamcast goal yet, sorry. Got mixed up with currency conversions.

Nope, we're £1700 / 29 backers short of the extra level and Dreamcast edition.

Having these two in the same stretch goal is weird. If we don't get it, I would hope they'd use the stretch money to make the extra level and ditch the Dreamcast port tbh.

^exactly what you think

and damn, id had an eye out to replace my old mail-order genesis speakers one day, right? so i left this one with like 10 minutes to go, it was at $20 something i wanna say? then this shit happened

Lucky they have now stated that they were close enough and will just do that stretch goal. Also will keep going with slacker backer stuff to try to get to the last stretch goal, but that's a bit far off I would think.

Been playing some Genesis lately.

Comix Zone- Love this game. The pixel art is top-tier, and nearly every panel has some sort of unique spin on the gameplay. And that totally 90s grunge soundtrack done Genesis style. Problem is it doesn't work well with my Genesis (model 1) and it will randomly reset. I've made it to the final boss once but I probably would have beat it by now if it hadn't reset so many times. I am going to have to get it on Wii VC in order to beat it. But really, I don't see why this game isn't praised more. It is easily top 5 genesis for me.

Phantasy Star 4- Not quite as good as I remembered? The manga style cutscenes are awesome and most of the enemy designs are really good, but the story and dialogue is really scant. The overhead graphics start to feel lifeless after a while, but I do love the look of the futuristic sections. The second part of the castle dungeon was so bad, completely symmetrical for no reason. To me, the best thing about this RPG is that it is so snappy and quick to play. Too bad it is way too easy
