Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Y'all like perler art? I made this Sparkster the other day.

Edit: guess I might as well start with the awesome Wonderboy in Monster World!

Ah, I gotcha. Well, I'm going to go ahead and nominate Ristar then.

Well, I was already planning on playing Monster World 3 so that's a good choice. I've also been thinking about playing Valis 3 and Cloud Master (Master System). Ristar is another good choice. To be honest, I'll probably play through all of those games next month.

great choices, i want to play both. i've been trying to get wonder boy in monster world. i beat monster lair for master system and thought it was awesome.
never new genesis had it until it was nominated here a few months back.

Some how I went all this time without ever having the first version official sega six button controller. It's pretty great and will be my go to from here on out. It's more in line with the saturn controller. Love that D pad.
When I first got a Genesis last year I went through 3 of the 3 button controllers because I couldn't stand the crappy d-pad. The 6 button is amazing, almost on par with the Saturn controller.

I finally played Gunstar Heroes for the 1st time ever!!!

Why did I wait so long to play it? It's really good so far!

Happy 2017, MDgaf! ^_-

I was browsing a couple of ebay stores I usually buy games from, and... What's up with JP Dynamite Headdy? I got the game six months ago or so, for 35 euros complete (regcard and SEGA Soft poster included) and pretty much like new, and now it seems going for more than double the amount everywhere.

I don't get it. They tell you the basic mechanics and features of the game and then assign it a 6 for playability without any justification?

By the way? Have we begun deciding on a game yet?

We have three nominated so far, Wonderboy, Ristar and Valis 3. Need two more, and i can make a poll.

Ecco the Dolphin is one of my favorite games, but I wanted the game of the month to be something I haven't finished, so I voted for Ristar, although I wouldn't mind Comix Zone either.

Ooh, I like the Genesis version of Valis III, I feel like it controls a little bit better than the TurboGrafx version, and the multiple playable characters feels very Castlevania 3 to me.

Ristar is fun and has an amazing soundtrack, though!

Its definitely an awesome lineup this month, so we are winners no matter which game wins here. Btw be sure to get your votes in, as Im not going to keep the voting open for long considering the month is already underway.

Yeah, I didnt take price into consideration this time, just wanted to get a poll going. I guess we should operate with a max price going forward, as we do in the NES-thread?

I know some are original-hardware-nerds but if you really want to play it without a fuss, Ristar (and Wonder Boy and others) are cheap on Steam. :p

Im going to play on original hardware, and I guess most of the participants in the Club so far have preferred it that way, but yeah, there is absolutely nothing wrong with finding other means to play the games like Steam, Virtual Console or one of the many clone-boxes Sega have released over the years.

A flashcart solves all those problems. I made it pretty far on Ristar when I had the original cart, gotta try again now!

Lately I've been trying various color enhancement romhacks. It may be blasphemy, but I really like the one that makes Streets of Rage 2 colors a bit more vibrant and neon, really fits well with the theme of the game.

Care to tell what it's called?

Alright, Im ending the poll tonight (euro-time), so be sure to get your votes in!

Edit: I guess i should give a specific time, but my sleeping schedule is so fucked up these days that I dont really know when I'll do it. Its probably going to be when i wake up, which is at about 4am tonight euro central-time, so in about 13 hours!

Alrigth, so its a tie between Comix Zone and Wonder Boy, so I suggest doing Wonderboy now in january and Comix Zone in february. Lets do this!

Looks like I got the jump on this one. I beat Wonder Boy last night.

For those who have played both, is The Dynastic Hero exactly the same other than the sprites and artwork? It seems like everyone who had a PC-Engine/TurboGrafx played that one but hardly any Sega kids played Wonder Boy in Monster World.

Also, is it consensus that Dragon's Trap is the best Monster World game? I've only played MW3 and 4.

Looking forward to discussing the game and series more with you all.

So prior to this becoming Game of the Month, all I knew about Wonder Boy was that it was somehow related to the Adventure Island series, which I had played before. I decided to look up the two series and it's... complicated.

1. Wonder Boy - Arcade, also ported to SG-1000, Master System, Game Gear.
It was an arcade game published by SEGA, all well and good. (The Japanese Master System release was called Super Wonder Boy)

Here we go. The developers of the game, Escape, owned the game, but SEGA owned the rights to the name, characters, etc. So when Escape wanted to do an NES port, they hired Hudson Soft to redo the game but with all new characters and call it Adventure Island, spawning a whole new series.

SEGA on the other hand, continued with the Wonder Boy name, but began introducing RPG elements.

Wonder Boy Series (SEGA)

2A. Wonder Boy: Monster Land - Arcade
This game was ported to the Master System and called Wonder Boy in Monster Land outside of Japan.

3A. Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair - Arcade
Things start to get complicated here. Hudson Soft (who was making the sister-series Adventure Land) got the rights to port future Wonder Boy games to TurboGrafx, except with reskinned characters, so this game made it to the TurboGrafx-CD under the name Monster Lair. SEGA also separately ported the game to Mega Drive under the original title, however it was never released in NA. (NOTE: This is NOT the current GOTM)

4A. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap - Master System
Okay, so they decided to make a Master System-only sequel to Wonder Boy: Monster Land (the second arcade game), and were going to call it Monster World II: Dragon no Wana. However the Master System was discontinued in Japan by this point, so they only released it in the West, although it did eventually come out in Japan on Game Gear. Hudson again ported the game to TurboGrafx-16 under the name Dragon's Curse, but they were allowed to keep the Wonder Boy characters (in Japan this port was called Adventure Island just to confuse everyone).

5A. Wonder Boy V: Monster World III - Sega Genesis/Mega Drive
THIS is the game we are playing. Also known as Wonder Boy in Monster World in the West. The game was remade for Master System, but that version only released in Europe, and Hudson released a port for the TurboDuo called The Dynastic Hero, which again featured all-new characters.

6A. Monster World IV - Sega Mega Drive
The final game in the series, this game was released only for the Japanese Mega Drive. It is also considered part of the Monster World series, but not Wonder Boy, for whomever is keeping track.

Adventure Island Series (HudsonSoft)

2B. Adventure Island - NES
Oh we aren't done yet. I technically should lump this outside the Adventure Island series, as this is a port of the original arcade game but with new characters.

3B. Adventure Island II - NES
A sequel to the NES game. Fine. However, this game was ported to Game Boy under the name Adventure Island, so the Game Boy versions are one number off.

4B. Super Adventure Island - SNES
Before making Adventure Island 3, they released a new game for Super Nintendo. There is also a mobile game of the same name, but it's actually a port of Wonder Boy: Monster Land because Hudson hates us.

5B. New Adventure Island - TurboGrafx-16
Again slipping in another game before 3. There's nothing fancy or confusing about this one.

6B. Adventure Island 3 - NES
Three games all released in 1992?! They were busy. This one was also ported to Game Boy under the name Adventure Island II: Aliens in Paradise (the subtitle was left out in Western releases).

7B. Adventure Island IV - NES
Only released in Japan on the Famicom

8B. Super Adventure Island II - SNES
The last "classic" Adventure Island game, it includes exploration and RPG elements, making it more like a Wonder Boy game.

9B. Adventure Island: The Beginning - WiiWare
This is certainly not the beginning. This 2009 game is the most recent release to either series.

---

So there you go. I hope I got this right, I've only actually played the first NES Adventure Island game, then the GOTM Genesis game. Shoutout to Wikipedia for helping me out. There isn't a page for the Adventure Island series as a whole though, maybe I should look into that. In case you're curious, SEGA owns the Wonder Boy line, but Konami owns Adventure Island after buying Hudson.

Make sure to check out Pyron's other color enhancement hacks if that one interests you, they are great quality. Mostly make arcade ports look more like their arcade counterparts.

Thanks!

I second this. The best way to play Street Fighter II is to use their color mod plus the audio fix from Stephane Dallongeville

How do I patch in two of them in one rom? Patch it, then repatch again?

Well I'm sad Ristar lost but I'm happy Wonderboy won lol. At least Ristar should be the game in March or whatever :p

WB in Monster World is such an amazing game though. I won't participate in this (backlog calls) but have fun everyone.

Thanks Morrigan! You can nominate Ristar again for march if you like, so maybe it will win then? I certainly hope so myself since Ive never really played it that much.

Thanks!

I don't know how rom patches work specifically but typically a patch file works by pointing to a memory address and telling the program what to change the code to so unless both patch files affect the same piece of code you can probably do that exactly without issue.

I briefly played Wonder Boy in Monster World, made it to the Dwarf village, and died ... and ... found out there's no continues or anything? I was in every inn and they asked me if I wanted to save my game, so I assumed I'd continue there? But after I died, all I had was the option to start a new game. Did I miss something or is it really this brutal?
