Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | OT | Borne of Souls

Just did the boss
Ape boss that also comes with 2nd ape in phase 2
prob the hardest ive fought so far. Phase 1 could do with taking no damage but 2nd phase fighting both took a while to figure out a game plan.

The second bar is exactly the same than the first with the exception that he can actually do a swipe instead of simply doing a thrust when the danger icon is showing up. Otherwise its the same patterns
I know i can also dodge the swipe. I just do not enough posture so it takes way longer and I make errors... I honestly do not know why...

Focus on vitality until he starts holding onto the posture damage.

The core mechanics are exactly the same as soulsborne.
What core mechanics are you talking about? The combat is completely different. Souls games are at their core RPG, while Sekiro is an action game, they are not even the same genre.

I can not beat Genchiro...

His first bar I can do with no hits. But the seconds one is really troublesome for me... I can not do enough posture to get his bar up....

When I got to stage 3 I almost got him so I do not see that as a problem. But the second bar oh boy..... I tried this now for 3 hours in total with yesterday. The guy before i killed in 2-3 tries....

But Genchiro is really a problem for me.

So I missed the window you were supposed to jump out of to find this guy and basically cleared out the next 3 areas and wondered why I couldn't progress the story. Did a quick lookup on the boss order and was like "Oh..." Tried him a few times and yeah this is gonna be a rough one. Sounds like the key to the fight is to remain extremely aggressive.

HAHAHA

Just beat the guy on his horse first try.

Was almost dead at the very start, used up all my healing items early on, but then I just kept parrying all of his attacks and simply wrecked that bastard.

Was then greeted with "Shinobi Execution", I guess that is the new "You defeated"?

Question I have is about direction? As in at start of game where should I head? I tried the Hirata Estate prayer thing, killed Jouzo but getting destroyed by Butterfly so went back and decided to explore some more? Is that the correct direction?

I finally did beat him. OMG was that torture. But it is also satisfying as fuck when you struggle for so long almost giving up and then you beat this Boss. This is why I love these kind of games.

Just got to the drunkard! Getting wrecked, loving the placement of sculpture Idols, far more forgiving than bloodborne I think, but the mechanics of this game are still more difficult I think. Arrow guys are annoying when you are trying to fight other groups of enemies.

GSO is kicking my ass, haven't even taken a marker off him yet. Way harder than Genichiro or GA. This game will put hair on your chest. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

These games (Sekiro, Souls, etc) look so cool, but unfortunately, really don't cater to my play style. I feel envious of those who can get into them.

Seven Spears is really destroying me, i think even my PS4 got Dragonrot by the amount of times i died against this mini boss.

Do note that the FPS mod seems to have some issues, input commands or what not not being accurate. I would stick to 60 and fullscreen for the safest experience. Nothing more tilting than dying to a boss at the final moments due to some dodge or parry not working as intended.

Are you getting a stealth attack off at the start of the fight?

Yes and even then i lose, though i came pretty close to defeat him a couple times.

It sucks because i need to kill him in order to upgrade Vitality and Posture a second time.

After trying to beat that ninja so many times i had to ask myself "are you having fun?"
I wasn't. I know the game is good. But it's not for me. Uninstalled.

Are you talking about the Ninja on the well? (Where you start on the beggining of the game)

I honestly think this game would be better if it was less relentless in the boss/mini boss encounters it throws at you.

It’s just not really fun to spend 5 hours learning a boss and finally defeating him only to encounter another boss 20 minutes later.

That’s one area where this game will never, ever compare to Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Those games knew when to say “enough is enough”, this game VERY CLEARLY does not.

The game looks fantastic on the XB1X - I'm having fun generating some gifs from the footage - though I admit I am getting my ass kicked. The grappling hook and stealth dynamics give it something of a Metal Gear vibe.

LOL at the
Monkey boss. Felt stupid by how long it took me to realize there was an invisible one following me lol. As a "main" boss it wasn't challenging enough, but as a fun change of pace it was enjoyable

How far in are you? I feel like over time as you get more used to the mechanics and start to overcome the "souls" muscle memory it becomes more fun and manageable.

I think I'm around halfway through and so far none of the bosses have been as hard as some of the harder Soulsborne ones. At least IMO

I found the Souls games challenging but always really rewarding. Rewarding in the sense that when you beat a boss, you know you had some nice rewards coming — a new area to explore, a new weapon, and a reprieve from the frustration (usually). This game never lets up to give you those rewarding moments and it doesn’t really reward you with a feeling of progress.

Health upgrade? Tough luck, your next boss kills you in a single hit regardless.

Damage upgrade? Won’t mean much because you’re going to be fighting a string of even HARDER bosses for the next 10 hours.

I think it’s a good game, I just think they’ve gone too far down the “hate the player” path with this one. Bloodborne was the beginning of that journey (but still manageable) but they went a tad too off the deep end here, I feel.

Nah, the game is just right.
You are forced to learn enemy attack patterns or else you won't get very far. The end result is misinformed opinions like above.

Guess it's just different opinions then.
I've found the mini bosses enjoyable to fight and big bosses have all been a blast. The upgrades seem valuable to me, between the improved health, attack, new tools and skills I've definitely felt my character getting better and I definitely feel more confident taking enemies head on than at the beginning of the game.

If it's the one I think then the item that gives you more "stance" helps. And remember you can grapple to the ceiling to heal in peace

She is not that hard, i came very close to beating her today, like a couple more hits.

Someone here gave me pretty good strategy to defeat her and it worked, i did not kill her because i made some mistakes in the end. Anyway here is the strategy i paste here for you:

Stay on her, attack twice, dodge forward left or right, attack twice, dodge forward left or right.... Rinses repeat. Shoot her out of the air with shurikens when she flies up then dodge towards her and get some cheap shots in when she's gathering herself up. When you see the ground unblockable attack show up, be ready to jump. If you're on point with your shurikens then you shouldn't need to worry about her airborne unblockable. Use the exact same strategy for the second phase and you should be good.

I would only add to bring snap seeds (the one that removes illusion) for this fight as well if you feel you need it.

This game is a Dark Souls 1 level masterwork. It just keeps impressing.

You don’t see the difficulty yet because the first 3-5 hours, depending on how you play, are deceptively easy. Come back and update us after you’ve cleared a major boss or two :)
Oh sweet summer child. My getting my ass kicked level is currently at a 7/10 . Definitely harder then ds3 in my book. Feels like I need to relearn how to play a from game.
Now 15 hours in, found two major story bosses, beat the one in the burning room, and crushed about... 10 or so minibosses within 3 or so tries each. My arsenal and skill trees are looking pretty healthy though I'm not further than ~3 nodes into each one.

The spear guy at the aqueduct was the worst, took about 6-7 attempts. His counters are hard to read. Quickdraw samurai man comes a close second but once you get the parries down he's a cinch.
The armored artorias-a-like was an awesome fight as well. Really fun to pick apart. ROBERRRRTTTTT

Seems like all my time practicing DMC royalguard and Ninja Gaiden is paying off :messenger_grinning:
I love the way the moveset is coming together. All sorts of ways to get in and deal with the various different enemy types.

I suck at this game. Like really suck. Spent 10 hours in a loop, clearing little areas, only to die at the two death blow enemies. No matter what I do, I just can’t beat any of them.

I was able to beat Dark Souls 1-3, as well as bloodborne. I was not great by any means. But the ability to level up your stats, meant I could spend time grinding to give me a leg up.

But since this game doesn’t have stat level up outside of the rare prayer beads, this game 100% comes down to perfecting the combat. Whereas IMO the other games you could get good at the combat, but get by with stats.

No matter what I do, I just can’t seem to get past the block / break and counter system. For hours I tried over and over. Practiced with lower level enemies and the guy at the shrine. But I finally had to admit to myself that I just suck. That I’m not a very good gamer. And that this game just is too next level for me.

Sucks cuz I really love the story / world. This is by no means a knock against the game. This is clearly a case of me just being inefficient skill wise. But I had to admit defeat lol.

I don't see that. Each upgrade is not only for your heath, but your posture as well which is absolutely helpful with later bosses. The increased damage also is quite helpful, but not really needed. If you are struggling there are hidden upgrades all over the place. Like all Soulsbourne games - you can beat the game without getting a single upgrade as they are *required*. Each major boss tends to also have one or two weaknesses you can exploit with the Prosethetic tools, such as the firecrackers on animal-based bosses, Fire on red-eyed bosses, and even a shield that can be upgraded to deal with the more ranged based and ghastly of foes.

There have only been really two bosses out of the 20 or so I have beaten that I would categorize as poorly designed or unfun (and that may just be me fighting them earlier than I should), the rest are well balanced, easy enough to deal with and made me "git gud" with the mechanics. I had to learn how to properly deflect 5 blows at once, I had to learn when to jump for cleaves, or mikiri lunges.

Long story, short - Git Gud. The game isn't hating the player, it just requires a different level of control and focus in combat that previous titles.

Um... what? You can beat the game easily in 15-25 hours and even less if you know the optimal path (but that is usually relegated to NG+) - just like the majority of Soulsbourne titles.

Finally got a chance to sit down with this today and I'm blown away. I did not expect this level of refinement to the basic Souls formula at all. Every minor gripe I've had with the series from day one has been answered, from the basic interface and controls to the character progression to the combat design. I'm hardly far enough to say the game is flawless but what I've seen (just arrived at the first big boss) it's certainly the best game I've played on PS4.

I call BS on this.

Plenty of people on other forums who’ve beat the game (and are way better gamers than I am) report 35, 45, even 50 hour initial play throughs. And that’s not even %100 on the initial runs, according to most posts, that’s missing tons of optional content. It’s a big game.

I call total bullshit on this. Sure, and Skyrim can be beat in 15 minutes, too.

Close - speedruns.com lists Skyrim beaten in 25 minutes. https://www.speedrun.com/skyrim

Let's assume speed runners are the top 1% of players. If they can complete a game like Dark Souls, 100% in under 4 hours - then it is beyond possible for the average person to simply *beat the game* if they had four times that amount. Sekiro is a shorter game than Dark Souls.

First From or character action game and I'm also playing with my girlfriend which is slowing my down a lot (she's pretty bad but it's cute watching her play) and after 3 solid days of play we have only just made it to Lady Butterfly lol

That has to be some kind of record? I don't even know how many hours we've played total (has to be at least 15 hours over three days) or how many times we've died but there's some serious Dragonrot now (I think three people are infected! lol)

I only gave Lady Butterfly a few quick goes last night but was surprised at how easy she seemed - you just need to dodge a lot and counter attack when she
misses or is there a lot more to it that I haven't seen yet? She only seems to have one bar of health as well or is she going to eventually turn into some kind of giant butterfly and push my shit in?

Fucking love the game by the way. Once I'm finished with it I'm going to try Bloodborne and also Ninja Gaiden Black - is there a way to play Ninja Gaiden Black on PS4?

Im at the same point really, im loving the game but i really suck as well.

Today i played a little after work exploring some new areas and getting some new itens/gold/skills, but the major part of my playtime was dying over and over again to the same enemies. After a while it can get frustating because it feels you are losing valuable time without any progress.

However i still think the game is a masterpiece, so im going to keep practing until either i finally get better or give up.

The only game i played from From (sorry) was Bloodborne. It was hard as well but i still think it was more manageable because of some things like level up, upgrading your gear... and if everything went wrong, most bosses had offline companion nearby or you could find somebody online to help you. The noob part in me wish there was at least something like this on Sekiro as well.
