September Wrasslin' |OT| Almost Brings a tear to my eye

God damn I remember that Nitro like it was yesterday.

Sitting there with some friends saying "This Nitro kinda sucks, wtf happened? Why the hell are 2 jobbers fighting right now?"

Then boom here comes all out of the crowd. Not being a smark but a good ole fashioned mark at the time I was legit shook. That was one of those awesome moments as a pro wrestling fan that I will always remember.

Almost a year later I hit Hall with a soda at the end of a Nitro don't think it ever made TV it was right as they were going off air. Yep I was a 16 year old asshole wrestling fan, one of those shitheads chanting with 10 wacky sarcastic signs.

Still even almost 20 years later that was an awesome way to debut Scott Hall.

What happened? I just started watching and Mark Henry was walking with Big Show to cheers. What did Henry do?

He read a statement hating on the fans for giving up on him because he lost to Rusev. So Big Show came in and talked Henry down saying that he is going to beat Rusev on Smackdown for him.

So setting up a turn on Friday.

WCW MONDAY NITRO 5/27/96

  • American Males vs Arn Anderson/Ric Flair
  • Steve Doll vs The Mauler
  • Sgt. Craig Pittman vs DDP
  • Shark vs The Giant WCW Championship
  • Maxx vs Lex Luger WCW Television Championship
  • Bobby Walker vs Brad Armstrong
  • Steven Regal vs Alex Wright
  • Sting vs Scott Steiner

The first 2 hour Nitro. In ring, it was so-so. Obviously the story is that Razor Ramon came out of the crowd and said he was bringing the war to WCW. The fans had no idea how to react and were confused the rest of the show. Tony and Larry had no idea how to react. Bischoff and Brain had no idea how to react. At the end of the show, Hall flat out said "We are coming down here, and like it or not, we are taking over." It's almost past the point of implying the WWF is implying. It's rad.

This show also had Sting debuting the Scorpion Death Drop (as a reversal), and Regal calling Alex Wright, "Junior Adolph".

Good stuff. Sounds like a pretty blase show minus Hall. You made the Giant and Sting matches sound pretty good too.

I guess that will be one of the matches at Hell in the Cell then. Don't really mind the turn for Henry, good guy Mark Henry's lame.

It's really interesting how understated it all was. There wasn't some big entrance, or an attack and crazy promo. He just sauntered out there, calmly said what he had to say, and strolled off. It was like he knew he didn't have to do all that shit because this was small time to him. It was WCW's 9/11, friends. Security was loose and they got hit. Everything changed on that day. Never forget.

Sting/Steiner had zero heat, which was really strange. The crowd just didn't react to anything. And the match itself was pretty so-so on top of it, but probably dragged down by the crowd not caring at all. Scott did try to kill Sting with a dragon suplex at one point.

It kind of felt like the fans were waiting for Hall to come back.

You know Hall's the man when he could make a denim vest/jeans combo seem intimidating.

I just noticed a new trend in WWE now. People wearing gloves in the ring to wrestle. Paige is wearing them now too.

Is it more of a functional trend rather than a fashion trend? I know I've heard a few times that wrestlers will wear gloves because it helps with their grip and their hands don't get as beat up.

Terrible promo skills, Rumble spots can be done by Kofi, and allegedly everyone hated Melina but Morrison was her boyfriend so he stuck around her and suffered for it.
They tried turning Kofi into the spot-creator for the MitB matches too but none of them were as exciting as some of the things Shelton Benjamin was doing in the ladder matches. Not near the athlete. Kind of stupid he never got to win one or get a decent chance above the midcard in the later 2000's.

Half-confirmed card for King of Pro-Wrestling next month - New Japan look like they're trying hard to sell out Sumo Hall with a line-up like this;

NJPW, "KING OF PRO-WRESTLING", 2014/10/15
Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo

0DYLseD.jpg

. IWGP Heavyweight Title: AJ Styles (c) vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
. Tokyo Dome no.1 Contendership: Kazuchika Okada (c) vs Tetsuya Naito
. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Titles: TIME SPLITTERS (c) vs The Young Bucks vs Forever Hooligans
. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title: Ryusuke Taguchi (c) vs El Desperado
. NWA Jr. Heavyweight Title: Chase Owens (c) vs BUSHI

Ishii also challenged Yujiro, but it hasn't been confirmed if the NEVER belt will be on the line. Also, Nakamura mentioned there's "only one man left" for him to beat, presumably referring to Shibata who has a win over him from the G1 - so, Nakamura (c) vs Shibata is potentially on the cards for the IC title. Plus, Goto has been going on about the Japanese uniting to destroy Bullet Club and today Makabe said he & Honma are with him, so there may be some sort of 6-man tag against the Bullet Club.

how can i watch this

The ending to the Ambrose interview on Miz TV was hilarious. Ambrose is going to main event before the other two former Shield members. He's so damn entertaining.
