no actually your fifth element comment was idiotic.

other than the flying ships nothing in the trailer suggested this was anything close to fifth element.

Mysterious girl who kicks ass like a super weapon...? I guess people could mistake it for that.

Then again, Serenity isn't French enough to really be like Fifth Element.

I think he's refering to River and the whole girl with superpowers being protected by someone thing. It's similar to Milla Jovovich if you haven't watched Firefly and went totally based on the trailer.

...but since this is a continueation of Firefly, the cup of STFU is still valid.

Other than being a story focused on a girl being hunted down by despotic powers-that-be, it doesn't have anything much in common with The Fifth Element.

At least the "It's a Farscape/Cowboy Bebop ripoff" people had something close to making sense.

How is it anything like Farscape?

I can maybe see Cowboy Bebop, it may use the same kind of elements...

...but Farscape? I've seen both Farscape and Firefly. Name one thing it borrows?

That leaves about 1% of the population that will have any idea what's going on in this trailer.

The Fifth Element did $263 million worldwide, not to mention it was an extremely popular movie on DVD during that medium's early years. Not exactly an unknown movie...

I really fucking hated The Fifth Element, so can somebody refresh me -- did Jovovich's character actually kick anyone's ass? I mostly just remember her screeching and running and doing some acrobatics and then two fucking hours later I felt really disappointed.
How is it anything like Farscape?
Despotic empire chases down a ship full of outlaws over the galaxy. One crew member is a genius who holds some kind of highly desirable skill or information. The episodes not following the "empire" subplot generally involve botched heists, ship malfunction, or unfortunate encounters with indigenous peoples.

I rather don't get your line of critique. What is there about the trailer you don't understand? You seem to expect it to establish things that aren't entirely possible in the span of a couple minutes. There's a pretty understandable plot outline and some effects/actions shots....I would not say that it's amazing, but it's at least standard Hollywood fare.

I'm getting a SpaceHunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone and Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared Syn vibe from the trailer.

It looks like it was directed by a TV movie director.

This is what I got out of the trailer: there's some people (rebels?), on a ship. There's some mysterious girl (the sister of one of those rebels?) that somehow comes into the story. Some evil black man (who is... who?) wants her.

I don't understand the "why" to any of that, and I just gave the trailer a second viewing.

I'm not saying the film will be no good, especially to those people that watched Firefly. What I am saying is that I don't see this trailer doing a damned thing to reach out to non-fans.

Oh, come on. Peacekeepers are basically grandious mercenaries. So that rules out the whole empire angle. Who was the genius? Crichton certainly wasn't, he just had the whole key to wormholes and everyone wanted it (peacekeepers and scarren).

So the only real link is "ship of outlaws". Which I mean come on, that's not even close to being a farscape exclusive plot device :p

I can't wait.

Major spoilers about Book....

We may never know his true past. In the movie Mal asks how he knows so much but he doesn't want to talk about it and later dies.

And relating to that...

Book isn't the only regular to die...

SERENITY NOW!

Edit - And I agree with Golem. All that, "Joss Whedon! The show was loved!" crap needs to be cut.

I loved the series but the TRailer gave off a distinct cheesy straight to video vibe thnx to hte horrible music and the text.

The trailer is targeting the public at large, not the series fans. The cheeseyness is a necessary evil, and Whedon is a little cheesy anyways.

I just rememberd where I saw this movie...It was called The 5th Element back then.

#1 Maybe you should watch Firefly-the series, or perhaps see serenity before assuming it's like the fifth element
#2 The Fifth Element was a piece of shit

If this movie has any sort of brains behind it I shouldn't have to watch the series. And of course I don't know anything about this movie BEYOND WHATS IN THE TRAILER and it seemed alot like The Fifth Element. Obviously everyone is commenting on the trailer in...*gasp* a Serenity trailer thread.

I'll grant you that there are a few plot items that are similar between The Fifth Element, and what you see in the Serenity trailer, but to call them "a lot a like" would be a stretch. I didn't even think about the Fifth Element at all when I watched the trailer, and it wasn't until I read this thread that I actually even saw any type of similarities. It's a tenuous link at best.

At least I know Im not the only one that got The 5th element vibe. Its similar in the way that there both set in the future, spaceships, mysterious chick who kicks ass. Well at least this will not have Chris Tucker's high pitched annoying voice.

Comparisons to Farscape and Fifth Element work for me as those were both scifi productions I enjoyed. Also enjoyed the short-lived Firefly series and its characters quite a bit. So, no redlights on this one for me so far.

I'm pretty sure that Joss has made the movie a manner that will appeal to non-fans. I've not seen the trailer yet, but my guess is this one is for the fans, and is perhaps more of a teaser than anything else. Trailers are usually craptacular anyway, so let's wait for the next trailers that will hit closer to the movie's release date before dooming its marketing to le fosse de bomba. I'm sure Universal does not want this property to go down the toilet, judging from DVD sales and its strong fanbase (aquired with little TV exposure and close to no marketing for the DVD, at that).

And yes, you should indeed watch the series - not to understand the movie, but to have watched one of the best scifi shows ever.

Warning: Do not speak shit about Luc bessons masterpice "The 5th Element!"

its a movie beyond you all!
it has a ass kicking cast!
directed by a master like no other!
wardrobe made by non other than the master designer himself J-P Gultier!

if you can appreciate it just because you dont have a "cinematic vision" then dont speak at all

I take it this is a movie based off a series? The trailer looked ok at best to me. It kind of had a second rate tv actor vibe to it, like it's a special episode of some sci-fi channel series.

Ok. The day I start knowing the names of the wardobe designers, or even caring, is the day I turn in my penis.

Malcolm Reynolds is the fuckin' MAN.

Fuck yeah, this movie is so gonna rock! And for those who have never seen Firefly (what the hell is wrong with you?), just watch 3 episodes: Serenity, Out Of Gas & Objects In Space. And if you don't like it by then, all hope is lost for you.

Btw, I just love this quote from the trailer:

"This is going to get pretty interesting......"
"-Define interesting...."
"Oh God Oh God, we're all gonna die?"

:D

The way he delivered that line sounded just like Buffy from The Gift I thought.

Buffy - "Ever heard of "Vampire Slayer"?

Vampire - Wha?

Buffy - "Wow, one that hasn't heard of me. Haven't seen that in awhile."

Vampire - Get lost girl.

Buffy - "How about "Oh God, Oh God! My leg my leg!"?

Vampire - *looks confused*

*Buffy kicks his leg*

Vampire - *falls to ground in pain* My..leg! My leg!

As good as the movie will be, I'd prefer it a thousand times over as a series. Not to mention I have a bad feeling it is going to tank.

Anyone happen to know that song that played in the beginning? I've heard it before, maybe on an Alias episode.

Looks like some generic Sci-Fi Channel original movie, especially since it doesn't have anything that stands out from every other generic futuristic action/adventure movie.

Maybe I have to be a fan of Firefly or have some sort of background on what makes the characters or story any good to get it.

That trailer didn't do much of anything for me, and I am a sci-fi buff. It felt shallow to be honest.

I felt the same way about the series until I finally caved and watched the DVD's. By the time it was done, I was hooked, and wishing to hell that it was still on TV.

Damn! Who is it? The only person I can live without is the doc. Tell me! I command it! :D

Well, lets face it, it's probably going to tank. The TV show sure did. I know, I know, Fox jerked with the show too much. Believe me, Firefly was great. The DVD has proven that, but I still think this is a hard sell for the mainstream crowd. Geeks like us are going to see it, and love it, but most of my friends only have a vague memory of Firefly, and none of them have seen it, even after my urging them to. If you watch this trailer as a fan of the show, there are a ton of cool things in there. If you watch this trailer out of context, it's probably not going to get you to go see the movie.

From all that I've read Serenity is doing very well in it's screenings and Universal has supposedly dumped a LOT of money into advertising for it. One article with Whedon said that the people at Universal LOVED the rough cut (which I found to be quite odd). It was originally supposed to open the same weekend as Fantastic 4 ( I think) they pushed it out because they feel it can be very successful. I've actually heard talks of a trilogy. All that said...it could still suck....or bomb.....

But I can guarantee one thing...It'll be better than the 5th element...."love will save the world" ..LAME!
