Shadow of Mordor deserves more attention. Come in and be hyped with me.

Yeah im getting it, ive bought the last few console LOTR games and enjoyed them, and this seems right up my alley. Im loving this current crop of action rpg games coming out, its my favourite genre by far.

I've watched some videos, and I can't decide if I'm interested or not. On paper, the death system sounds kinda cool but also kinda silly. The gameplay videos I saw had the character doing super moves, instant decapitations, etc. which turned me off. Seemed like he was really overpowered.

I guess overall I don't really understand everything I'm seeing of the game just yet. That's not a bad thing, it just means it's kinda unlike what I've played before in some key ways, and because of that it's difficult for me to decide whether I wanna play it. But I'll certainly be keeping my ear to the ground to see what people have to say going forward.

If I am remembering correctly the devs said a couple videos back that they were basically playing on god mode with a lot of the upgrades unlocked specifically for the ghost mode powers.

I haven't actually been following this game at all other than the original trailer and the Assassin's creed animations debacle or whatever.

It actually looks pretty good and its on my radar now.

I am already Hype.

Seriously though, this game looks amazing on every single level and I hope it really delivers.

The nemesis system sounds absolutely fantastic but it will only be fantastic if it really operates how they say it does.

That story trailer was put together VERY nicely.

I decided to biy it as soon as the release date was moved away from 10/7. And Dragon Age getting another month in the oven sure didn't hurt either.

I can hardly wait for the insignificant melodrama to unfold before my very eyes.

At least Gollum is in it... I played a bit of that LotR MOBA because of that little scamp.
Fairly pessimistic viewpoint you got going there. I have a hard time as a LOTR fan not getting 100% geeked out by that trailer. But I suppose if you don't appreciate the fiction then you won't be as excited.

I'll be playing it but everything about the game has been screaming constant in your face action and grimdark. I like more personal stories and downtimes, peaceful settings alongside the more action packed stuff. Does this game offer that? Trailers and gameplay showcases I've seen don't seem to show me this.

The LOTR license actually has me less hyped than I would otherwise be. Don't care for LOTR at all... that said, the game looks interesting and if it review well I may be in!

Yeah, the dev said that they've been showing a lot of this combat-focused Nemesis stuff because it's their biggest differentiator, but that exploration, downtime, secrets, and varied side missions are very important, as well.

If that's the case then I'm a bit more interested than before. I don't do well with constant action.

I am cautiously optimistic. I would love for this to be LotR's "Arkham", but the story premise is dumb and the gameplay looks a little too close to AC for comfort. The Nemesis system looks neat, but the game needs other ways to differentiate itself from every other open world action game without relying on its license.

I guess I view it less as "LotR fiction" and more as "how can we squeeze a story for a game into the already-established LotR lore." I mean, as cool as it is to jump-attack the Dark Lord Sauron, we all know how that is going to go down. And hey, Gollum!

That sort of thing just doesn't sit well with me... it gives me vibes of the Force Unleashed and how it worked into Star Wars.

Its way more arkham than AC.

Didn't know much about it but now it's on my radar. I'll still wait for reviews to see if the nemesis system and other stuff works out well, but I'll probably end up getting it.

Fair enough, but this game is made by reputable developers who are proven... and it actually looks like a good game mechanically (where as Force Unleashed, well...)

I've been screaming sleeper hit for a while. Game looks good, real good and is definitely on my radar. October can't come soon enough.

Seems interesting, but as already stated, its hard to get an idea of how balanced this thing will be. Especially given his crazy abilities can decimate anything thrown his way either with mind powers or cartoonish blade acrobatics. Just looks entirely too OP against some random orc generals they constantly keep showing. Hard to really take the universe and license seriously with this god-man.

I'm not LotR devotee, but in that trailer, are we meant to interpret the blond elf to be Sauron in the form of Annatar? Is this the first time we've seen Sauron depicted in any physical form aside from his armored dark lord appearance?

Yes. That's what I got from it. It made me more interested in the universe as a whole, because I never knew Sauron started out as physical being. Even though it seems like it draws it inspiration from the bible and satan.

I really like what I see in this game. The combat looks fast and brutal. I really like the boss system works and some enemies will climb through the ranks and become the big cheese. I just need to see some exploration like quest and such and I will be all set to get hyped.

Usually the better the game is, the less i'll seek out information about it.

I like it better if they sneak up on me, instead of anticipating them for months.

In this case all I needed to see was the initial announcement demo and I knew I was getting it. So now I play the waiting game.

I'm way more hyped for this than AC: Unity, lol.

Been on my radar for months. Looks awesome. Just not sure I have the time to invest in it.

Sometimes I fucking hate owning all the consoles. It results in too many quality games never being played.

Thanks for a great thread, OP! Going to catch up on footage as soon as I can, but the small bit I have seen as been really impressive. Consider me hyped!

So i've been reading about this nemesis system a little.

From what I gather it's just that if a minion kills you it gets a better rank and remembers you? That's it?

That is one part of it.... you can also control the ones u defeat and order them to assassinate their superiors and stuff like that. Its neat.

I hope that this system is not poorly forced on the player in the end.

I expect to be able to dominate all named characters that can be dominated. So that in the end, when a key battle looms, my target looks around and realizes that everybody is against him. I also know this probably not to be true.

I mean, it looks pretty decent. I will pick this up at 75% Steam Sale next year for sure. No multiplayer, probably sub-15 hour campaign, it will sell poorly as well due to this packed Fall.

It's because I appreciate the fiction that I'm unconvinced by this game. The tone of the game looks completely at odds with the tone of the stories as Tolkien wrote them. Where he wrote his stories from a strictly War-Is-Hell perspective (having suffered through the Somme himself), this game looks like it revels in its gratuity and violence. It's the worst excesses of the Jackson films, namely the focus on making war seem 'cool' and 'awesome' instead of the arduous slog it is, with some really questionable stuff added, and a boatload of stuff that simply doesn't fir the setting.

I'm sure on a mechanical level there's some good stuff going on here, but as a story that takes place in Middle Earth, it just looks like a slap in the face of everything Tolkien wrote. I've long argued that Middle Earth is a piss-poor setting for videogames, and this isn't changing that. Too much of the setting is having to be bent/broken just to make room for videogame tropes.

Well the developer hinted some spoilers:
Maybe the reason Sauron isn't physically present during The Lord of the Rings is because of his defeat in this game.
.

Either way, these guys are hardcore LOTR nerds from everything I've heard, so its in the right hands.
