Shadow of Mordor deserves more attention. Come in and be hyped with me.

So what does GAF think of this game? Me and my girlfriend want a couch game that she can watch + help me play, similar to something like Red Dead and stuff.

I'm interested in this game and so is she but the last game we played through was Watch_Dogs and that was quite frankly Dog_Shit.
It looks great and should fulfill your desires.

Interesting side note: the writer of this game was also the writer of RDR.

This game has a "season pass". As far as I'm concerned, "season pass" = "zero hype". The words basically mean: Please wait for us to release the final game in 6 months or so.

I'm pretty sure every AAA title coming out for the rest of the year will have some sort of season pass known before release.

After Watch Dogs I still refuse to pre-order another Ubi PC game regardless of who is producing it.

I almost fell of my chair at work, ppl looking funny at me right now heh

Pre-order confirmed seems i´m double dipping this. got it free on PC so might just get it on PS4 too.

Enjoyed Monoliths past work so i´m not worried on this one.

Interesting, she often says one of her favourite games (If not her favourite) is RDR.

I just watched IGN's play through and I can imagine it being pretty fun so it's become a 100% purchase for me, I'm sure we'll both like it!

No audio in the IGN video is lame. I really hope the screen tearing gets fixed by release because holy hell is it bad, like possibly unplayable for me bad.

i wonder if screen tearing happened when they captured it or something because Ive watched other videos of it on ps4 and didnt see any screen tear

There's no way that tearing is in the game. It's like the most tearing ever, lol. Plus we've seen plenty of gameplay where it's not there.

just found out about the season pass cutting story missions

totally mess up

EDiT: and it's gonna sell to 25 bucks

Ehh I'm not going to get that season pass. If they don't even know the majority of what future content they'll put on it, that means it's likely they were not going to put it in the retail disc anyway. I'm not too torn up about it.

If there's any aspect of it I really want to play, I'll just buy that piece.

Anyone tried this already? How does Controls/Combat feel? Seems a little bit like the Batman games. I fear lack of diversity :/

When I think of the Batman games, I don't think lack of diversity lol.

Looks like it juggles combat and stealth pretty well. Add in some pseudo-exploration/puzzles and we got a competent Arkham clone stew going.

A 25 dollar season pass? Noooo thanks. Maybe I'll grab dlc piecemeal when it's super cheap and people know what's worth it.

I'm really interested in this game overall, but I'm kind of concerned that it might be a bit repetitive. Do we know anything that's more to the game than just running around killing Orcs? Other than the classic filler open world content, that is.

Well there is a Story/campaign where
Talions family gets killed by Sauron and he takes Saurons army to follow himself (Nemesis system).
Supposedly there are some sidemissions aswell.

Do we know if the game has collectables a la, say, AssCreed 2's feathers/treasures?
You collect eagle feathers so they can deus ex machina your ass to the conclusion when the devs run out of ideas. In true Tolkien fashion. And who said the devs weren't purists?

I have no clue.

This is an oversimplification of the Nemesis system in my mind. What the game is really about is manipulating orc society. Sure, the streams show a lot of fighting, but it's all means to an end--gathering intel, planting sleeper agents, engineering infighting, etc. It seems like there's a lot of flexibility in how you achieve your overarching goals, and I expect to see a lot of interesting emergent behaviors from NPCs based on your actions. There's a lot more to it than just Batman-style combat, even before you consider the more directed story content.

This is my concern as well.

I stil have it preordered but I'm considering cancelling it and returning to it at a later date.

The premise and combat appeal to me but all I've seen are barren (it takes place in Mordor so from a story perspective it makes sense) wastelands and fighting Orcs, Orcs and more Orcs.

What do we know about NPC areas, customization, environment diversity, etc.?

My fears would probably be put to rest if I researched some more in to it but from what I've seen so far I'm still very much on the fence.

Ive read that there are 3 zones that are supposed to be different from each other the more you progress to the end of the game.

You can costomize Talion by earning new abilitys via XP and customize your weapons (Bow,Sword,Dagger) with Runes that you get by killing the named enemys.

Didnt read about enemy diversity but the trailers showed also showed Giants and Human enemys.

There was no screen tearing as we played it in the studio. Must be in the capture somehow. Dammit. Apologies.

Just watched this finally and yeah, REALLY hope the screen tearing is gone by retail :(

That being said, congrats on the team for doing that Playthrough as I now finally understand the freaking game as well as am sold on it :)

Oh! NVM (^___^)

has there been any info of what you actually do in the open world? running into exploration points, finding artifacts etc?

Oh yes they do, Boromir. I plan to do exactly that come September 30. This game looks fantastic.

Played this at gamescom and was really blown away at how fun this game was. Had a little extra time to play it and primarily putzed around in attempting to kill/dominate commanders to get to the generals and build up my army. Combat was easy to pick up and forcing in-fighting between the ranks and watching it happen in real time at times felt really special and engrossing. Was totally off my radar before trying it out and is now preordered. :)

Awesome! Thanks for the impressions!

I think the press has been doing a poor job of previewing this game. Every time I hear someone talk about it on a podcast they spend the whole time talking about the Nemesis system and don't really spend any time discussing the general 'feel' of the game.

I don't think I even knew it was an RPG- I thought it was a straight action game with a gimmick.

Having said that, I do love most of Monolith's stuff. Not a LOTR fan, but of this reviews well or they let me try a demo I'll definitely look into it. Maybe I'll try and play it at PAX

Hype!

Haven't been this excited by a game mechanic since Red Faction Guerilla's GeoMod destructability

Great news. Thank you.

For anyone waiting for a preorder deal, the PC version is currently available on Green Man Gaming for 20% off with this coupon code: Z4364W-7MR5WA-N5BCOO

$40 is a pretty good deal for what looks to be a pretty good game.

In all fairness, the Nemesis system is this game's unique selling point and the devs seem to have put a LOT of time and effort into it. I can see why they keep pushing it in previews and whatnot.

That said, I agree that there's still so much info missing on "basic" gameplay mechanics. How big is the map, are there friendly towns/hubs/taverns or whatever, how diverse is the map, etc.

Had a thirty minute play sessions with a developer next to me. I told him frankly that I really don't like LOTR but that I'm very interested in the Nemesis system, which made him smile and go "okay, cool." As I was futzing around, he was explaining things, the systems, the wild life, and it was great. We tried to make plans to go after certain orcs, but every time something weird would happen and they would die by some animal or funny coincidence. We laughed a lot during the demo and it was just plain fun.

The open world only makes sense because of the Nemesis system though: you create your own targets and missions by selecting your approach to taking over that region. You go after orcs with a certain purpose in mind and you set out to do it, and things will happen along the way or at the location of your next target. There's Batman-esque combat, the possibility to be stealthy-climby like Assassin's Creed, there's other stuff too - but it's all connected through the Nemesis system. And as far as I can see, it really works as advertised. Orcs remember your actions, and your actions influence the inner workings of the orc hierarchy. Don't think you can play the bits around the Nemesis system or something, there's no such thing.

Also, wild life is more dangerous than any orc. I could handle ten orcs while trying to keep the converstation going with the developer sitting next to me. But it only took one wolf/mountain cat-ish creature to chomp at my throat and me missing the prompt to kill me :')

can you elborate on this? I have only been following the game here and there. Is the Nemesis system sort of like almost how you start levels, or create missions? And outside that there is no seamless open world/exploring? Im famliar with what the nemisis system is more or less, but just wondering about this aspect.
