Shadow of Mordor deserves more attention. Come in and be hyped with me.

can you elborate on this? I have only been following the game here and there. Is the Nemesis system sort of like almost how you start levels, or create missions? And outside that there is no seamless open world/exploring? Im famliar with what the nemisis system is more or less, but just wondering about this aspect.

Devs have said there is plenty of exploration and collectibles and stuff.

I have been anticipating a day one buy of this for a while now.

But I just went to Amazon to check ... and they are selling a $25 season pass for this game.

What the fuck ...

Oh, no, I don't mean it like that. The open world is always there and it's all seamless (or at least, I believe the game is split up in big regions, but each region is like a level, a part of the game you have to pass). So you can always roam around, fight random orcs and wild life, maybe collect some things.

But if the Nemesis system was removed from the game as it stands right now, there would hardly be any game, just a hollow open world. From what I gather, most of the content comes from you trying to 'take over' the five leading orcs of your currect region, and you can decide yourself how you fill in the 'take over'-part. You can't just run up to the leaders and kill them, you have to gather intel on them to find out who they are, then go through the ranks and work up to their lieutenants and use them to get to the leaders. You can dominate one orc and try to level him up by throwing challenges at him, then have him take on the leader, or just dominate him to directly attack the leader and use this disruption, or send him to the leader as a warning, making the leader stronger (which I believe increases the chance for better equipment or runes).

There's tons of possibilities, and the Nemesis system creates missions; a rivalry between two orcs means they will duke it out and you can be there to partake in it. There's always a reason to travel around and do things... but most of it comes from the Nemesis system, from what I gather. And I think that's cool, kind of a new approach to things, I like futzting around with 'power struggles', like in the 'The Godfather 2 game' (even though I know that's not exactly a technical marvel). I'll certainly do the review if we get a PC copy, otherwise I'm getting the game anyway.

I also really dislike LOTR. Like, a lot.

My wallet weeps.

ok cool, thanks for the clarification. Im hoping to eventually play this thing.

This game has grabbed my attention. Once I saw the E3 gameplay I was hooked. Can't wait to play it. So many games released to play in Sept-Nov!

And you are in an open Mordor, for crying out loud. Not to mention that the brilliant Nemesis system looks to set this game apart all on it's own.

Yeah but that doesn't necessarily mean we'll be able to visit iconic locations like Mt. Doom, even though if we could, it would be incredible.

Do we know if they were able to license music from the films for this game?

Exactly how I feel. Each time I see the game I come away more impressed. I'm not really into the setting, but that enemy memory mechanic is unbelievably cool.

Shadow of Mordor is Far Cry 2's open world NPC interplay, but you play as Corvo Attano wearing Altair's climbing gloves. - Dream game!

Every time I see this tweet, it gets me hyped all over again. I just hope that stealth is a more viable way to play than the more recent combat-heavy videos have led us to believe; I feel like there would be a lot more opportunity for interesting and emergent behavior through subtle infiltration and use of the environment than making every encounter feel like a horde mode. The very first gameplay video seemed like the best example of this: it allowed you to set up support archers and trigger your follower to backstab the target before jumping in. That kind of preparation would just be the icing on top of the cake that is the Nemesis system.

Hard to believe it's just over a month away. It was that first video that sold me back in January, and in a year with very few interesting AAA titles, it's been a long wait indeed.

Story trailer - Meet Ratbag:

Glorious voice acting.

Yeah, this was really interesting. The Ratbag voice actor was great! Seemed to show a little humor, too. It was also interesting to me that some of the uruk's will have some actual substantial story. I was wondering how the nemesis system would work in the context of the story. Very cool.

The only thing, it was hard to me to figure out the tone they were going for in the trailer. It seemed much more light-hearted, but it had some serious stuff that felt sort of out of place in the rest of it.

Still, can't wait!

Edit: Actually I think it's just the music being so serious with the tone of the trailer being light-hearted. I watched it again. I'm thinking the story in this game is going to be really well-done and it's awesome to see more of it.

I really want to be hype about this game. But early comparisons to Assassin's Creed kinda scared me away? Do those comparisons hold true to anyone who has played it?

That was awesome. Cool voice acting, and funny to boot.

I'm really hyped for this game man, can't believe it's still a month away.

Agreed, really strange considering everything else looks great. Talion's face looks like it was designed by an amateur. Really bad.

Can't say I agree. It didn't blow me away but I thought it looked pretty good. Might have to watch again to see it from your perspective.

That Ratbag trailer was awesome. I thought the game was going to be over the top serious so that was a welcome sight to see some humor in there.

"...but he's not dead yet!"
"I'm gonna go kill him."

Not to sound mean but this game or at least the videos are absolutely boring. I found myself nodding off at the ign video and the rat-guy video. The explanation of the different hierarchy of orcs seems so meaningless since they all will fall by my blade. I think i will pass on this game

It's called giving narrative purpose to your actions?

It looks great and should fulfill your desires.

Interesting side note: the writer of this game was also the writer of RDR.
This post is a bit old, but I saw it when scanning this thread (game looks dope) and was confused. As far as I recall, Dan Houser and Michael Unsworth wrote Red Dead. Houser is obviously still the VP at Rockstar and Unsworth was still there as well as of GTA V's release.

edit: oh damn, looking at the credits it looks like there was a third writer, Christian Cantamessa. Didn't remember that for some reason.

Bummer he left R*, but now I'm even more interested in this.

Well I was trying to see if the videos can get me excited for this game and in the end, i felt so bored.

To be fair, in the gamespot video just linked, the guy said the same thing you did about that video being boring and him nodding off. I'd watch it, as they explain things well.

Really? You were nodding off during the two minute trailer for the game? For some reason I find that positively hard to believe.
