Shadow of the Colossus is amazing

I dig it, but not anywhere near as much as some of you people. Controls are great, I think, but the boss design overall is inconsistent. Everything else is generally amazing, but the most important part of this boss-rush arcade-like experience is really wavy.

Best fucking game ever. Also an AMAZING port to the PS3.

This game is the definition of epic. Every little thing is epic in this game. The music, the art direction, the story, the scale, the atmosphere...everything. And the MYSTERY....everything is such a mystery and just makes you wander what happened to this land..

You are just a regular guy with a sword, a bow, and a horse. And to save a loved one you are willing to fight with 16 fucking Colossus in a Forbidden Land.
How much epic can it get, really?

The mood in this game is just perfect. The desolated landscape with nothing but lizards just gives you such a lonely feeling...you are really alone in this journey, only with Argo by your side.

Just...epic. My favorite game ever and I doubt it will ever be dethroned.

Also, the ending cutscene is just phenomenal...one of my favorite endings to a game.

One of the greatest games of all time, my personal GOTY. Always like it far, far more than ICO. The fact that we may never get a game from this team again is a crime.

Agro is also the best sidekick/companion in any game, ever.

I need to try it again. I've just played it a bit.

I wasn't impressed with the first boss (although I can understand why it'd be awesome when it came out in terms of scale, etc), and the controls seem pretty disappointing to me.

Of course I'm basically expecting it to control like Zelda after hearing so much over the years comparing the two games.

ICO seems to hold up better, but neither of these games hooked me immediately with their gameplay.

probably in my top 5 games of all time, definitely in the top 10. Its a majestic game in every sense. If there was a single piece of evidence i'd present in the "are games art?" debtate, SoTC would be it.

I honestly think Sunsoft's Gimmick! has more complexity and subtlety to it than SotC ever has. Take that as you will, and I know it's not in the same genre, but still.

That sucks to hear. Who handled the port?

Glad I still have my original.

bluepoint, who usually do decent work. for many colossi, gripping is extremely sensitive and you'll be flung around constantly for the slightest twitch giving you a fraction of the amount of time you should have to get good hits in. it makes normal annoying, hard incredibly frustrating, and time attack next to impossible.

gimmick! is an incredible game, so that's not really a mark against colossus :)

Arguably the greatest game I have ever played. It's not as replayable as the likes of Ocarina of time and the Chrono's, but tyat experience when you go through it all.

They based the HD Collection on the EU version which was harder

jesus, is that what happened? i've beaten the US version more than 5 times, the HD version i could barely make it through once (due to boredom)

I love messing around and just learning various things you can do. Like petting Agro, or riding your horse while standing and still able to fire your bow and such.

Epic game, got it Day 1 on the PS2. Still one of the best soundtracks ever composed in a videogame.

I love the cold surrealism of the entire game. It's really immersive, and taking down each colossus feels both epic and sad at the same time. The tail end of the PS2 gen was incredible.

It's what god would have played.

What if god was one of us? Just a slob like one of us? Blue, blue, blue, blue, blueblueblue, ja bla, blebleble.

I'd probably put it somewhere in my top 10 all time for sure. The style, the discovery, the horse the everything haha

This thread reminded me I still got the ico and shadow collection to play :D, never had a ps2 back in the day so these collections are great for me. How is the 3d in these games, any cross talk or unpleasantness?

I'm playing through SotC right now in 3D and it's not bad. The 3D def adds something especially when scaling the larger colossi and traversing the landscape looks incredible.

I'm biased as hell though, I doubt I'll ever play game I love more than this.

God of War 3 is not quiet like Shadow of the Colossus, but it definitely shares some it's Boss battle DNA, maybe even a lot.

SOTC is my favorite game of all time. It's not perfect, not with those controls, but there's simply nothing like it.

What's wrong with the controls? Aside from the camera controls (which can be inverted to feel more comfortable), the only thing I've ever had trouble with is the horse, which just takes some delicacy when turning.

I love exaggerations like this.

What changes were made? I'm playing game on the HD version for the first time, and I can't find anything wrong that isn't adjustable in some way.

BUT I will admit, the controls sometimes irked me. Two buttons to do one action? It can remove you from the game at some points.

What, like rolling? It's two buttons for two actions: crouching and leaping. Same for the sword stab: crouching and stabbing. Or climbing: leaping and grabbing. I personally love it. I wish more games would make use of the controller's buttons in a wider way (it's one of the things I like about Assassin's Creed too, but that particular scheme could be done better), allowing more maneuvers for the player in a way that makes sense and requiring a little more involvement. I'm tired of how automated so many actions are these days. It lessens the freedom of the player to orchestrate his/her actions exactly as intended.

Having skipped the PS2 generation (strictly PC gamer back then)... I'm only catching up to some of these gems now.

Are there anymore games like this. I've only just started SOTC and I don't want it to end. It's remarkable

It only gets better and better, enjoy my friend.

go fight colossus 3 on hard and tell me it's an exaggeration.

There's definitely a difference that makes Colossus #3 and #15 annoying on Hard Difficulty, but by no means is it "broken" or game-ruining. I managed to beat both Normal and Hard Time Attack modes in the HD version, and I'm not some super-skilled speedrunner or anything.

I wish it wasn't different from the original, but the difference is slight enough that I still recommend the HD remastered release over the PS2 version easily.

There really are very few games out there quite like it, and I didn't play even SoTC until the summer before last and loved it. One game that reminded me of SoTC in a way with the landscape and dreadful and depressing atmosphere at times (aside from Ico) was Nier though, so you could look into that game.

Huh, well I'll see. Is it random, or do you just have to manage your grip meter a little more carefully?

It's not random. Wander just loses his footing more easily when hanging onto a colossus than he did in the PS2 release. The only times you'll definitely notice it are on #3's stomach vital and #15's chest vital in Hard Mode. Otherwise it never really becomes an issue aside from just requiring you to time more stabs more carefully than you did in the original.

The glorious HD remasters of this and ICO are worth owning a PS3 for. So glad that these masterpieces were remastered, especially SOTC because of the frame-rate. That's one of those discs I'll be keeping for the rest of my life.
There's just a magic in these games that nothing else has been able to capture.

I feel the exact same way, man. I even made a thread about it last year.

Yeah it was the game that sold me the ps2.

I got the hd collection a few years ago for ico as I'd never played it. I finally replayed sotc this year. The controls haven't aged well but the game itself is still a masterpiece and Agro.. Well, no words.

I remember that thread, brofist!

Ico holds up so well even with a 900% increase in resolution, you can tell how much care went into every single object, the water looks nice, vegetation is lush and beautiful, having this gorgeous game hidden forever behind that blurry resolution would have been a crime.
