Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter project by Harebrained Schemes [Ended, $1.8M funded]

$400k+, time to break out the champagne.

Hoping for more details on the Shadowrun Returns Anthology book. Really want that physical copy but a little curious on what to expect from it.

They've done them before. Into the Shadows was one of my favorites.

Thinking of picking up either the SNES or Genesis game as this has me pysched.

Which is the better one?

The SNES one has a stronger story and more complex dialog system but isn't as tight to the system or the cannon, the Genesis version has less of a backstory and is more of an open world game but closely follows the cannon and system. Both have their merits and are completely separate games set in the SR universe.

So this is Harebrained Schemes prior work:

Strikefleet: Omega

My guess is that Shadowrun: Returns will probably have a larger budget and thus have larger production values than the above.

I have that book at home but can't remember off the top of my head if that illustration is in it.

I will take a look at it when I get home tonight. If someone's terribly interested, remind me. I might have forgotten. :(

The book has that illustration. It's from the Clan Warriors source book, if I recall correctly.

Definitely Tim Bradstreet. While he also did a lot on Vampire, I think he really set the look for Shadowrun.

I think all Elmore ever did was the cover painting for the first book

Yeah, Bradstreet is awesome.

I'd love to see some famous artists that have never touched the Shadowrun universe take a shot at it.

Michael Whelan

James Warhola (nephew to the famous Andy Warhol and he paints Sci-Fi/Fantasy art covers...he did a bunch of Robert Heinlein covers years back.

Has there been any talk of offering a "big box" as a reward?

Answered in the FAQ:

You guys gonna put out a boxed version of the game? I want it for my shelf!

That sounds really cool but it's not our plan right now. Maybe if we exceed our funding goal, we can find a way to add it.

Also, for you Mac users out there:

What about a Mac version?

If we exceed our funding goal and hit $425,000 we'll add one + we'll add it to the $15 reward tier!

Total is currently $420,452, 5,000 more and you get Shadowrun Mac. Get to pledging already!

Right, and I'm just wondering if another one of those is what to expect from this. Getting a physical copy of a nearly 300 page anthology is well worth the bump from $60 to $100.

They really lowballed it by asking for 400k. They should've asked for 600k or something.

It's still going up at a pretty high rate though.

400k is easier to reach and then means they can start offering incentives to get more out of it. Not sure if that's better than if they had just asked for $600k+ at the start or not though.

What does a Rigger do?

Riggers are like deckers but instead of going into the matrix their consciousness is split between rigged vehicles. They can potentially control multiple armed vehicles ranging from large RC sized spy/suicide devices to helicopters, planes, UAVs, to big rigs running down the highway carrying their unconscious self and their other toys staying miles away from the action.

Imagine sitting in the matrix with a dozen TV screens showing each of your RCs'/ cars'/ UAVs' views and giving them commands or being able to take direct control of any of them and be able to drive them with the finesse a pro racer could only dream of. They are a great support characters and with enough resources can be a one man army.

In for $15 as well since now a Mac version will be made as well.

Holy crap, I just noticed that two people have pledged the very top tier level (10,000 or more)! 0.0

Yes, that is the great thing about Kickstarter. There seems to be some people out there willing to spend a lot of money on games (or other projects) and with Kickstarter you can tap them with your higher rewards.

Haha, they need to film the "thank you" update at the same time as the pitch video with the way some of these old franchises are being funded in a matter of hours.

Wow, that was incredible.

From the bottom of our hearts, we'd like to say THANK YOU to everyone who has backed us so far. If we weren't working our butts off on our new game, we'd be dancing around the Closet (our tiny office) with tears of joy streaming down our faces. Instead, the team is heads-down at their computers, sniffling loudly and wiping their eyes with their shirt-sleeves.

To everyone asking about a Mac version of the game, we've been saying that if we hit the $425,000 level, we'd add it. Linux support is definitely on the table too! (After all, who'd be a better Decker?)

In Jordan's video update below, he talks about things we could add to the game if we hit higher funding milestones. We're working on clarifying those milestones and will have an update for you before the weekend (in Seattle).

It already surpassed $425,000 (currently: $461,113), so a Mac version is on its way!

Thank you video here:

Awesome!

No sense in not donating now since the extra dollars will only serve to make the game better. I've heard they can really open this baby up with just 200,000 more.

Why is a big box now something that is required?

Not required, but surely you can see the correlation between the revival of old-school experiences and big boxes. Back in the day, you'd get a big box with a large manual, reference card, poster, etc. Wanting a big box to accompany the rebirth of your 20 year old memories seems logical to me.

Exactly. It's definitely not "required" but it's a very nice bonus. I wouldn't except all Kickstarters games to have it, obviously.

Damn that was fast.

We have been asking for a Shadowrun RPG for years. Publishers and devs should have listened. The audience is there.

I think if this is met with a good response once it releases, more good things will follow.

Doesn't even necessitate the game being released yet - just for them to keep amassing significant amounts of money through crowdsourcing. These devs are reacting simply to the huge popularity of other recent Kickstarter-funded games. The more of this there is, the more devs will follow suit.

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.

Yeah, even though I'm not sure if I'll like the gameplay (doesn't seem like it will play similar to the SNES version, which is the version I love), I still put down money for it, because I want the Shadowrun IP to do well.

Seeing as how they will get all profits from the sales of the game, yes they will have plenty to carry the franchise forward if it does well.

Totally agree. Still, I wonder if it's just not enough revenue projected per project for the corporate publisher who already wants to simplify all of their many bets into fewer, bigger deals that attract more shareholders, score bigger investments and credit due to the ease of reading the business strategy. KS has proven there's a market out there, but it might be a while before we see more than some quick retro game dumps kicked out from some publishers' dusty IP graveyards in response. If the first big KS-funded games release to positive reception and sell well to non-backers, I think you'll see the floodgates open for old stuff being more seriously and carefully handled instead of being needlessly destroyed and/or heavily-remixed in some mistaken delusion that modern gamers aren't interested in that old stuff playing like it's old and stuff.

Pretty cool there are using Michael Komarck art. Here is another one of his artworks for those not familar with the RPG.

If you had told me 6 months ago that we would be seeing a new Schafer adventure, a sequel to Wasteland by Fargo, or Weisman rising out of obscurity to deliver a new and proper Shadowrun... well I wonder what the future has in store.

I'm hoping beyond hope for Larry Holland to pop out with a spiritual X-Wing sequel.
