Shank |OT| (PC/XBLA/PSN)

I had a lot of fun with demo and would have thought that the consensus is positive. I'm confused why so many people disliked it.

Not gonna buy it right now since there is a lot of other stuff on PSN I'm going to buy soon, but it's definitely on my list for when it goes on sale.

I don't really get this D-pad issue - I thought it played perfectly with analogue controls. Will be picking this up this afternoon when the EU store updates. I also found the demo way more compelling than Scott Pilgrim.

I hope they add D-Pad support in a patch, as the game is great, but i feel that it would play much better if D-Pad was used for movement

Loved the demo... looks like a purchase for me.
PSN or XBLA is a tough choice.

Just got finished playing the PSN demo and despite what reviews say, I enjoyed it and will be picking it up for XBLA tomorrow.

Is it because you prefer achievements over trophies? I would think if you like a demo you would want to unlock the full game instantly and w/o redownloading everything on a different platform than you played said demo on?

It's definitely enjoyable, but I can't play it for more than about 30 minutes at a time, just gets too repetitive. For fifteen bucks it's entertaining, but Viewtiful Joe (not that I'm sure why the comparison was even drawn) it ain't.

The style and presentation is really top-notch though.

This game is incredible. I can't believe it is getting any bad reviews, it deserves some serious praise.

At first I thought things were a little hectic and the controls were a bit overly complicated, but after getting my head around the game a little more, it all started to make perfect sense. The dash is actually very useful, it's best to always try to attack enemies from behind, like dashing through an attack and going into a combo while their back is turned. If you use it correctly, you can get through big fights with out even being touched. I actually started to enjoy the game the most when it gets really hectic and there are a million things going on at once.

Using all the different weapons to create big combos is an absolute joy, the game controls really really well. The boss fights are a blast as well.

I seriously can't recommend this one enough.

Ugh, I bought the game when the kill 20 enemies achievement popped up and didn't get the achievement like the game said I would. Now I have 50 enemies killed with still no achievement, the game is cool but that is stupid.

While that sucks, it's only 20 kills. Start playing again from the beginning and you should get it in five minutes.

Will I be able to use an EU unlock key on the US demo or will I have to download the 2 gig again?

Why don't you just try it? Worst case scenario is that it doesn't work and you have to donwload it again.

Well, before I posted that I checked the save location and only the game download was in the shank folder. I figured the save data was on my gamertag and it'd be impossible to start over since you can't delete data from your tag. I went ahead and went back into the game and I had to start over again, stats were reset and I had to complete the level again and got my achievement in the process. I should really stop buying games when the prompt comes up to avoid this shit in the future.

Yeah I'll try this afternoon - I meant more in terms of future DLC though

You won't have to download the game again, just the key. I download game from other regions all the time and then buy in-game and it's always the key.

I don't think this works in most cases as e.g. the US version will try to link to the key in the US Store but it can't do that when you e.g. are currently in your UK account.

and yes you often need to download the corresponding trial for the key, but yeah, no harm done if you just try it.

Love, love, love it. The combat feel super-cool and improvisational, and the visual style + sense of humor is right up my alley. I actually LOLed at the end cutscene from the first level. That doesn't happen often.

I'll play the demo before too long. There has been a few 2D beat 'em ups coming out as of late, and I'm having a hard time choosing which one to start on next. I'm apprehensive about the decision to use the d-pad for weapon selection instead of movement, though - I was looking forward to trying Shank out on my gamepad.

Ok I experimented a bit more with the combat today and I think I amstarting to like it more. Maybe I was too tired after waitign till 1 in the morning to appreciate it. :lol

Still not sure if I should get it with Lara Croft coming next week.

What's with all the dpad complaints? I don't get it. I had no problem using the analog stick.

Graphics are cool -- as for the gameplay, jury's still out for me there.

He didn't mention a different account, just the region from where he downloaded the demo. Let me put it this way, X game first appears in the German marketplace, I log in to xbox/germany with my gamertag(US account) and download the trial. Unlock game from within the console and voilà, just a 108kb key.

I do prefer achievements to trophies but what I think it will really come down to is if one looks / plays better.

When Shank walks on the bridge and the sun is behind him, the 360 version shows a "real" light effect which reflects on Shank sprite. PS3 version has a "fake" light effect and it doesn't show on Shank's sprite.

Getting the PS3 version though...better control and sound

Isn't Lara exclusive until september 28th?

I definitely prefer how the 360 version looks. The bloom off the sun makes for a nice effect, which is totally absent on the PS3 version.

Anyone got any tips for the last boss? His kicking my ass.

I'll spoiler this, since, well, it's the last boss:

You need to block. Block his normal attacks, and combo afterwards. Don't get in too close. And dodge his flashing unblockable move. He's actually really easy once you figure out how to block his shit.

That boss is annoying because he requires something I literally never had to do with any other part of the game.

Agree w/ all.

Biggest complaint is the lack of cool kills. Very simple and low budget compared to the rest of the game. Combat systems seems OK, but its depth is questionable. Combined with the pretty weak level of brutal/visceral combat, $15 is a bit much. Unsure if I'd finish the game.

I'd buy at $10 based on the demo and to support this type of game, but now I think I'll check out a few reviews first.

Demo was ok, but nothing really special... I'd be interested in trying the full game

The biggest thing that bothered me was that in the first cutscene, Butchers pin up tattoo changes from left arm to right and then back to left, ha

After trying the demo I'll definitely be skipping the game. It looks okay, but it feels incredibly shallow, the game almost plays itself. I was bored after killing 4 enemies. Scott Pilgrim seems much better value; it looks better, sounds better and it's cheaper.

Yeah. The art style and animation alone makes it a automatic 7.5 or higher.

IAWTP. I actually had more fun with the Scott Pilgrim demo then Shank. Despite being the same type of game, Shank seemed too repetitive to me. That and I am not really into the art style.

Complete opposite for me. Scott Pilgrim might have more charm but its way slower and boring.

Yup. Same for me. Scott Pilgrim went downhill after lvl 1 and I'm enjoying Shank a lot more so far.

Wow I'm not a big XBL gamer, but the art style of this game looks amazing.

So what's the verdict...is it worth buying?

Shank is great it really translates that Ninja Gaiden/DMC style well to 2-d.
The game is great once you master blocking, dashing, & rolling.
It's a good challenge on hard the combo options are great.
The shot gun you get in level 2 is a blast!

Shank & Scott Pilgrim are both must buys in my book.
They both have there place & shouldn't be compared they are worlds apart.

Scott Pilgrim Is River City Redux.
This game is more 3-d action game shifted to an all 2-d plane.

I don't get the complaints about the lack of d-pad controls. The 360 controller has an atrocious d-pad. The analog controls seemed fine. Don't try installing the game onto a usb stick it runs horribly, I had to move my install to the hard drive. I might pick this game up since I found it more enjoyable than the Scott Pilgrim demo.
