Never liked Michaels. I remember always rooting for his opponent in all of his feud, even for Tatanka haha! To me, Michaels is an great wrestler, a awesome storyteller in the ring, but one bad character/unlikeable guy (face or heel). Boy-Toy? Sexy Boy? Religious? All crap. I must be the only one that always hated DX. Their forced humor and stupidity appealing to the child... major sigh... The day DX reunited was the last time I watched the WWE...

Everybody knows that this will not be his last time, they always come back...

Damn, sucks for you. I always rooted for HBK no matter what his gimmick was, and ESPECIALLY during the 1996-1998 period where everyone seemed to hate him. He was just the most captivating performer during that period on the mic and in the ring. And the ORIGINAL DX appealing to children is laughable. I think you need to go watch some old promos. Immature? Yeah, that was their shtick. But in no way appealing to kids.

Indeed. I quit watching wrestling the day Shawn Michaels retired after his match with Stone Cold. Watched a few times again when i heard he had returned only to find it wasn't the Shawn I knew and to this day haven't really watched any wrestling.

Aside from him not having the heel "attitude" anymore (aside from the one period against Hogan in 2005) he was arguably having even BETTER matches, and feuds during his 2002-2010 half of his career. I don't see how fans of Shawn Michaels the wrestler could say "it wasn't the Shawn I knew."

Paid no attention to WWE since I was a kid, but was always a fan of Shawn. I loved that I shared my name with him :lol His ladder matches with Razor Ramon seem to stick out in my mind.

There was that 'game show' that had a bunch of celebrities on it. It was hosted by Frank Zappa's kids.

That was a very sad, fitting and honest goodbye last night.

I don't think anyone could have done better. From the tip of the hat from the Undertaker all the way to the homo-erotic kissing with HHH in the end. Loved it.

Michaels will be terribly missed and I believe him when he says he won't be coming back. I think it's sad when guys have to come back, whether because they can't give it up or because of financial difficulties.

I think Michaels has too much respect for the ring to come back and give a lackluster performance due to natural aging.

I'll have to go back to watch some of these youtubes tonight. I barely watch wrestling off and on nowadays, but it sucks that I missed Shawn's goodbye. Back when I was really into wrestling as a kid I loved The Rockers, even moreso Shawn since he was also from San Antonio.

Lately it was cool to turn on Raw every few months and still see Shawn doing his thing. Even the sometimes shitty DX stuff still got a laugh out of me, and of course he's always been one of the better performers in and out of the ring since forever.

Finished watching the 'My Journey' dvd last night and man, I'm going to miss him so much. Just one epic performance after another whether it was Wrestlemania, a minor PPV or even Raw. The last segment with Cole was very touching and the montage at the end was fantastic. Wrestlemania (which is pretty much the only event I watch anymore) is never going to be the same without him.

despite the obvious contradiction in this statement, i feel compelled to say it:

the man is a god.

I always heard he was really unprofessional. I remember that video when he oversold to make Hogan look stupid. Classic.

Damn, DX in 97 was great shit. I loved the Bret Hart feud, it was so different for wrestling. Heel vs heel, with a legitimate feud underneath that - and DX encouraged to be as cheap and lowbrow as they can be. The more insulting they were, the more heat they were taking from Bret Hart. I loved it at that time, completely unique. They got away with everything, which was a big part of their character. Shawn Michaels was really amazing at hitting every button. Almost too good at being a heel. Watched a great list of videos in a row.

Raw 10/06/97 promo part 1 part 2
Raw 10/06/97 Triple H vs Bret Hart (w/ Michaels having a pretty memorable role outside the ring)
Raw 10/13/97 promo
Raw 10/27/97 Michaels at the booth, post-match

Another thing I actually really liked was the gang aspect to everything at that point (though survivor series-fueled). I really enjoyed the WWF in late '97. Not to say I didn't love 98-00 as well.

Growing up my favorite wrestler was Bret, and my best friends was Sean..you can see where this is going. I stopped watching wrestling right around time Bret left and yes i like him more..however Sean's a legend in the wrestling world and deserves respect.

I've seen almost all of the videos posted in here when they were live on TV - damn it man, if only I could time travel, I swear I'd go back to the 80's, then enjoy the glory years of TV in the 90's, right down to RAW is WAR - I'm dead serious.

These are the little things I loved about Shawn, he didn't even have to be the focus of the camera to be hilarious - this starts off with him and HHH staring at Chyna's cleavage, and he continues to look at it throughout HHH's whole promo, I don't even think I heard a word he was saying the whole time, I was just looking at what Shawn was doing... :lol

Wow, after all these years, I have never seen this video before - and look at that, Bret's wife was right all along in the end with the accusations too...

Makes me wish I could see all the backstage stuff from back in those days too...

I didn't start really watching wrestling until the very beginning of the Attitude era, basically the month after Michaels retired the first time. Then I stopped watching around '02, right before he came back full time. I've been watching for the past year again, but I can't help but feel I missed out on Michaels in his prime (twice!).

The both of you, go out and watch 'Wrestling with Shadows'. The documentarian had no idea they would be shooting the last months of Bret Hart's WWF career.

What timing. What luck. We have one of the most interesting behind-the-scenes stories of all time on footage. Interviews and all.

Shawn's brother was a Military Science instructor at West Point while I was in my second year there (95-96), and before the Army/Navy wrestling meet, he got Shawn to come visit. They set up a real wrestling ring in the mess hall. He walked down the main wing of the hall to his music. He gave a piledriver (!) to some cadet dressed up as a navy wrestler and gave a little promo, and at the end sheepishly asked if we would not tell anybody that he had been there.

My table at the time was in the main wing near the entrance and I got a picture with him before the event started. I really need to scan that picture in one day. He was a cool guy to do that for us and his brother, CPT Hickenbottom :lol. I don't even remember if Army won the meet though.

just finished that.

there is just not replacing this guy. as someone who used to watch wrestling pretty often, it's bittersweet seeing such a great performer leave on his own terms rather than get horribly injured and be forced to retire, but also a part of me hurts a bit when i hear about another legend exit the sport.

how is the popularity of wrestling now, compared to the mid-nineties?

It's probably just as popular, but skews much younger. WWE is all PG these days, I think it has lost the older crowd. All the teenagers in the Attitude Era are mid-late 20s now and don't seem to take to it anymore.

I blame John Cena.

Wrestling has always been for the young crowd. Even Attitude only really attracted kids and teenagers.

Good vs. Evil.

It was also a prerequisite for all shows following RAW to at some point feature a WWF wrestler. Good times.

I found a pretty decent list of around 75 or 80 of the top matches HBK has had, and have gone through the trouble of putting them in chronological order for you :)

Thank you. It's nice to see so many bolded matches in his recent run so there's plenty of stuff to find. (It looks like he went nuts in 2005.)

HBK vs. Diesel was very much a guilty pleasure of mine. Mind Games vs. Mankind is one of my favorite matches ever and I think Mick Foley called it his best. The first Hell in a Cell was the best of the ones I've seen. His performance vs. Austin at WMXIV was amazing.

I'm really going to miss HBK...if that man had a PPV match it was, a lot of the times, match of the night...very talented performer...my favorite part of the farewell speech is when he thanks us for letting him show off...thought that was awesome.

Actually, think most hold that the Attitude era began in late 97, which is near the end of Michaels' tenure. And the best year was 98 IMO.

Sadly, I never saw those. Got the n64 version which couldn't handle the FMVs.

In the trade-off, we did get Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy, it worked out in the end. :D
