i wonder when (if) we'll get the media looking in on this.

major problem seems to be just a lack of new backers. the numbers are holding in the mid 300s fine but it could be better.

Anyone else feel that the way they clumped the stretch goals for the different areas in the game together is a bit weird?

As it looks now Baisha village will be really fleshed out while the other areas get nothing extra.

Pretty sure Yu said during the Q&A that they focused on Baisha first because it is the most important location in the game. So I imagine most of the game takes place there.

yeah, i mean the stretch goals for chobu and bailu village are based on world expansion, but the baisha stuff has story-related goals like the infiltration mission and character perspective system.

I have said this before, and I'll say it again.

Baisha will be like Dobuita in Shenmue I. It is likely that the other villages will (if other stretch goals are not reached) be like Sakuragaoka and the Harbor area in the same game. Interesting and well designed, but much less packed with density of content and activities.

I have no problem with that. I trust Suzuki to design the world in a way that feels organic, at whatever scale he is able to do so.

Well, if we look at the story trajectory, it's probably something along the lines of :

- Ryo/Shenhua gets out of the cave
- Shenhua now knows her destiny is to be with Ryo
for his journey
- Go back to Bailu
- Get some information of where to next
- Get to Baisha/Choubu and finish the respective story arcs within each area

Thinking it all now, I'm curious how Ryo will deal with the fact that Shenhua's going to be accompanying him throughout his revenge journey now, and the whole "two fishes out of water" scenario, since Shenhua has never left Guilin.

this is terrible but...

i'm hoping for another cliffhanger ending. how else could it possibly end? shenmue had a pretty clean break to carry on into shenmue II, but now the journey into asia has really started can there ever be a clean ending like the first game?

As much as I loved Shenmue 2's Guilin (or Disc 4) section, I'm hoping for more of a S2 Kowloon (Disc 3) ending. Definitive, but with an idea of where the plot is going.

Me too.

Lan Di floats away in hot air balloon.

A story can be incomplete without a cliffhanger ending. =/

Shenmue 2 could've ended at Kowloon just fine.

Me too.
Lan Di floats away in hot air balloon.

When Lan Di flew away on the helicopter, 10-year-old me was like:

We need a stretch goal at 5.8. Even something small and cosmetic. Just to have something fill that space.
maybe. if we get enough of a boost we can blaze through the 5 million mark easy. we just need something newsworthy to get new backers and encourage people still in the digital tier to up their pledge.

Me too.

heh

i'm hoping for something dark. there's something about a dark ending that always gets me. empire strikes back style.

it could have, but thankfully it didn't. the end of shenmue II is one of the bravest things in video games.

the guilin sequence of shenmue II is totally needed. the rest of the game is pretty action packed and expansive, but narrowing it down and making it more of a serene story story-focused experience really helped as a kind of 'cool down' after all the madness in kowloon.

i mean the whole end of kowloon was The Raid before The Raid was even a thing. intensity followed by smoothness and peace. kinda like kung fu.

I'd love for Shenmue 3 to start with a remade Chapter 5, personally.

I agree in the circumstance that SEGA acts like SEGA and doesn't release I + II HD Remasters.

If they do, it would feel odd doing a series playthrough and replaying a relatively lengthy section over again.

That's so funny to see that mentioned. I was just explaining Shenmue 2 to someone and said that The Raid was basically the Yellow Head Building sequence.

i had to sell the original shenmue to a friend's girlfriend as "animal crossing with fist fights"

Haha, that would have sold me right there and then if I didn't already love the game ;)

Now that I'm thinking about it, the 70-man battle is basically the end of The Raid 2 also. Not only are there a ton of henchman to beat up, but there are the three "bosses" as well!

I am now going to forever think of The Raid as an ultra-violent Shenmue haha!

i honestly can't wait to see what fights happen in shenmue 3. fingers crossed we get at least the 6 million battle enhancement stretch goal. i'd love to see what would effectively be yu suzuki's own next iteration on virtua fighter

Total keeps climbing...

Every dollar earned brings us closer to Lan Di.

until he escapes on a jet ski/motorbike/goat

actually he's never really 'escaped' from ryo. just never considered him worth his time. i wonder if they'll actually confront each other in 3.

ryo will get owned

One thing I love about the games is that Ryo is certainly no crazy-good kung-fu master.

He (possibly-canon) gets his butt kicked by Chai in the arcade, cannot even TOUCH Jianmin and Xiuying, and, even though he eventually does defeat Dou Niu, Xiuying handles him offscreen with seemingly little effort.

Ryo truly is on a journey in every sense of the word as he continues to mature in both personality, skills, and ability.

he got his ass kicked a little in the first game, but he was kind of the local badass. big fish in a small pond though, as he got his ass handed to him REPEATEDLY through S2. i loved that. his character development was great too. he was a good guy with a bit of a mean streak in the first game, but he's kind of an asshole in 2 until he gets knocked down several pegs.

My random guess is that Ryo's tranformation from a human being into a fighting game character will happen in this chapter :

who knows how much of virtua fighter rpg's plan is left in current shenmue.

though both games have been pretty accurate to the art and details they've shown...

Well, I'm still expecting some sort of "turning point" in the game where Ryo will take that huge leap forward that will strengthen his skill to at least not be a bug in Lan Di's eyes.

And given the huge Chinese wuxia and kungfu influence, that's not uncommon in wuxia stories either. Even for stories where the protagonist learn bits and pieces from many masters, there's always that one point, and the pictures do hint that Akira(Ryo) eventually has a moment where he wears his blue Virtua Fighter outfit instead of his original green outfit, which I'm taking it as his turning point.

Got my copy of Shenmue 2 today. Having first beaten Shenmue 14 or so years ago now, it's been a while. But now there's no reason to be apprehensive, because I've got to get myself caught up! :D Really psyched.

Any new footage would be great, but honestly I'm not expecting much beyond possibly "hey we adjusted the models in the original trailer" or something of that type before the end of the KS.

well, yu suzuki did say ryo meets a master of nanquan in 3...

you've never played shenmue II? you're in for a ride.

And Shenmue 1's 70-man dock fight was totally Jet Li's Fist of Legend simulator.
