Shenmue III's new publisher is looking to port the game to modern platforms (Apple Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch)

As much I looked forward to it, once I got the game I was terribly disappointed.

If only for the reason that traversal was stupid. I had to slow walk everywhere because if it ran it meant my health/hunger/stamina meter (it seemed like it was an all in one meter) would go down way faster and I would constantly have to eat food to keep it up.

If they removed that aspect alone I would have kept playing.
this is what made 3 trash in my eyes have a new mode that takes that out and i will play it and most likely enjoy it.

Hardcore fan of the series here, they really need to do a few things before porting it tbh:

* Stamina system needs to go back to what it was in 1 and 2
* Combat needs more mechanics. Throws need to come back.
* The game's overall appearance feels off. I think some tweaks to lighting would be enough. New consoles should have enough power to manage it.
* (unlikely) Story beats need more punch. There's a lot of build up to meeting Shenhua and finding out about Iwao's past in 1 and 2. 3 really shits the bed here, there are SO many opportunities to meet Iwao's old acquaintances. Find stuff via exploration, etc... Literally none of that exists at all.
* Final act was clearly 90% cut. What should've been a Yellowhead style dungeon is basically a few hall ways with dudes standing around. Give them a few more months and a modest budget and it can be filled out with puzzles, unique enemies, mini bosses.

Even a few of those would be nice to have. But if they wanna test the waters for a sequel, the storytelling MUST be at the bar of 1 and 2. 3 simply isn't there and without the good storytelling, the rest of the game can't carry the experience.

Backed the third game on Kickstarter as the first two games are some of my favourites ever. Never bothered playing it after hearing the impressions. Didn't want to tarnish my thoughts on the franchise.

If they would just change the controls a little it wouldn't be that bad.
Yeah, if they changed the controls, the gameplay, the story, the graphics, the level design, and the name, it might actually be a good game.

The only way Shenmue 4, 5, 6 etc can succeed is if they streamline the gameplay for modern audiences while still keeping the "exploration/QTE" accurate for Shenmue.

SEGA not giving the rights to Suzuki to use the Virtua Fighter engine definitely hurt Shenmue 3 (that battle system is horrible). And like others have pointed out it was a damn anime filler episode that focused too much on "capsule toys" mini games, grinding for money and an annoying stamina system where you are forced to eat.

I wouldn't mind other studios giving a go at the franchise.

  • (Yakuza series) Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios is an obivous choice
  • I'd actually prefer the battle system of "Sleeping Dogs" and that gameplay to the Yakuza series
  • Let's see David Cage give it a try. Heavy Rain/Beyond Two Souls' style is basically Shenmue (at least the narrative will be the main focus)

There's a shitton of animosity for this series, I'll say that.

Why can't people be happy that a fanbase might be one step closer to seeing a series finish that they really want to?

Game didn't make $6.3 million on Kickstarter because. It obviously has a very dedicated following. Sure, a bit of that was hype train, but not all.

Shenmue III was a disappointment, but that's okay. People wanted Yu(who isn't young anymore) to finish what he planned. Maybe they'll get their wish and I hope they do.

This forum is ridiculous sometimes. "Glad this studio bombed. Glad this game crapped out, series is ass. Glad this publisher went bankrupt. I hope this series never continues, fuck it, never liked it."

YS Net's new game came out today:

Only way we get more Shenmue is if this stuff does well. Not sure this is going to be the ticket. The Shenmue Dojo review is half hearted in its enthusiasm.

Sounds short and like it has horrible controls. I wasn't too keen on Air Twister either. This studio isn't AM2, clearly. I do like that it's something different but man, what a drop for my man. I don't think anyone outside RGG can make a good Shenmue sequel/remake, and that doesn't appear to be reality for Sega.

AA budget for a AAA game... Usually isn't going to work out.

Surprised that no companies saw the potential here with Shenmue.

They should have given the first two games the Yakuza Kiwami approach. The remasters were absolute trash.

Sega should sell the rights to a publisher who cares about the franchise. They didn't even care enough to publish Shenmue 3, but thought they could scum some sales over the excitement around Shenmue 3.

I spent $1,500 on Shenmue 3 and I absolutely hated it, lol. I'd still go all in for Shenmue 4. It's a disease, a desire to recapture one of my last great gaming memories - Shenmue 1 and 2.

I think Yu Suzuki is as "brilliant as ever," but he's got a crew of like 5 temps working for him. It's just not AM2.

Never touched this series, but, if I got this right II ended on a massive cliffhanger and III rebooted the series sonewhat instead of resolving It, right? On top of being a rough Game overall.

I think Shenmue III could try to get something going with a definitiva versión that tackles Gameplay gripes and issues but that need funding. And I don't think nobody is doing that given the Game hardly broke even. Shenmue fans have proven that they where as loud as they where few. Everyone that wanted this Game funded the KS. They wont make any more money from anyone else.

I platinumed it on PS4 including DLCs. Kickstarter backer too. For me it was a decent nostalgia trip for me besides broken fighting mechanics that I really don't liked, but I don't think it needs modern upgrades.
Move on to the next one, or bust.... I'd say.

I feel like this game deserved way more respect. It's a pillar game for a major video game console that essentially defined a generation.

It's sad to see these games get such little love.

Capcom did the right thing with Resident Evil 2 remake showing exactly how this should be done, yet what do we see for Shenmue which I felt was the Dreamcast's Halo. Absolutely nothing. I've convinced that if Shenmue 1 and 2 had been ported to PS2 they would have been major games. And I think Shenmue has the potential to be a 10 million seller type of franchise with the right resources behind it.

The problem with 3 isn't the ending. The problem is you just walk around running out of stamina while you play simplistic gambling games and there's barely any story connecting it together. I guess a lot of people think the first two games are equally boring and pointless but I guess you had to be there.

Anyway, hopefully Steel Paws and Netflix give YS Net a boost so they can hire a couple decent staff members. It looks like the character shares some moves with Ryo. From the Shenmue Dojo review:

As you progress through combat encounters, pay close attention to the main character's fighting techniques. Keen-eyed Shenmue fans will immediately recognize several familiar moves, including:

  • Twin Palm Strike
  • Body Check
  • Elbow Assault
  • Spinning Backfist
  • …and more.
These attacks are lifted directly from Shenmue III, seamlessly incorporated into Steel Paws' fast-paced combat system. This subtle yet meaningful homage to Suzuki's past work makes fighting feel even more satisfying for long-time fans of his games.

From a technical perspective, it's also clear that Steel Paws' battle engine is a stripped-down version of Shenmue III's fighting system. While simplified to fit the game's arcade-style gameplay, the mechanics translate surprisingly well to this action-packed format. The fluidity of movement, combined with well-timed combos and enemy interactions, gives Steel Paws a distinct but familiar combat feel—one that longtime Suzuki fans will likely appreciate
