Should MS really hang their hat on Game Pass and Xcloud?

I simply don't care about game pass. Im not saying its shit or a terrible idea, just for me personally its not something I care for nor would I bat an eye if it were to go away.

This is entirely anecdotal but I typically know what games I want to play month to month. Usually my year is pretty much figured out early on as to what I'm looking forward to. To fill in the gaps in between I usually play Destiny 2 or a backlog title, to which there are many.

I bought Sea of Thieves, Gears 5,and Horizon 3 regardless of them being on gamepass. Why,I dont know, value proposition to me made me feel personally like I value the game more having purchased it, dumb I know.

Plus what's good for one company may not be good for another. I think Microsoft did gamepass as a way to keep itself afloat late gen cause let's be honest, there wasn't a whole lot going 1st party wise that was exactly setting the world on fire. Sony doesn't have this issue so it doesn't make sense for them to throw games that are selling millions of copies @ $60 a pop onto a subscription service devaluing the game.

I have friends with kids who use gamepass as a means to keep them entertained cause they'll see something goofy or random and want to play it,so I see the positives of the service. Or if you're strictly a Xbox exclusive player and maybe dont have funds to buy games as often as you'd like gamepass is a great option.

For me, I dont play hundreds of games a year, I know what I like and I'll just continue to buy the amount of games I'd typically buy in a year and be just fine.

I know GP is great value you guys. My point is how great would GP be if your pc can't run 90% of the games on there?

People seem to forget that a new gen is starting and that hardly anyone has a gaming pc with anything close to the specs of the Series X.

This means MS can do 2 things

1. Make amazing next gen games for Series X and alienate 95% of their GP user base because they'll look and play like ass on Xone and low-end pc
2. Scale down the ambitions of Series X games so they look and play basically the same on all platforms.

Isn't it obvious that while GP is great value, it's a pain in the ass when you're trying to sell a next gen console.

I don't think buying your game outright makes them feel more valued is dumb.

It sounds like you use gaming very specifically to suit your needs and the idea of option shock could disrupt that.

I think that's a fair argument.

I have fallen into the Humble Bundle thing where I bought all these bundles then play 3 games out of them.

You're conclusions are not based in any kind of reality. If you don't have a PC that can run games on game pass. Then don't get game pass. By this logic every game on PC should not be made with hardware acceleration.

There is zero evidence to support GP somehow waters down ambition in videos games. Zero.

You're willing to miss out on every game that isn't on GamePass? That's crazy to me.

But, I've always owned every console, so I could always play whatever games I'm most interested in.
I mostly play MS first party because have more things to do than game .

The beta works great. What are you talking about?

Just because stuff like Stadia is shit, it doesn't mean MS didn't come up with a better way to stream.
Yeah, the misunderstanding here is I was talking about streaming as a whole. Stadia, PSNow, and especially xCloud all got good results from reviewers, but they don't work as reliably in a general use setting.
Personally I had a 100MB connection, and still had drops until I upgraded to optic fiber. Let's not even go over network speeds outside, but those are a shitshow.

I'm actually confident the tech works, but the infrastructure has made game streaming as a whole giustifiably maligned.

It's included with GamePass Ultimate. Again, people on mobile don't have a problem paying for Neflix.
Yes, but most mobile gamers consider the ideal price of a game to be "free". GPU has to compete with that offer, and while the quality game selection is obviously there, the key issue is with the userbase.

Why the fuck would they do that when they can do it right now and stream at 1080p?
To play games they haven't downloaded. I also thought that xCloud was going to offer 4K streaming rather soon, but maybe I'm wrong (genuinely asking here)?

Ultimately I just feel MS might have to find novel ways to monetize GP, but this doubt only comes from
1) We don't have detailed GP financials, only userbase numbers
2) Streaming has not proven popular at all, and while I agree xCloud's approach is better I'm not sure it can beat general audience apathy

What tv show do you watch for "months"?
Depends on distribution model, but a weekly released series with 12 episodes could keep you for 3 full months (or 4 paid months).
It's partly the reason the Snyder Cut will be released as a series of 6 episodes (3 months renewed subscription).

MS is partially trying to do this by releasing some GaaS games themselves.

But how many AAA games do you need to release in a year to keep things going? How many AA to fill in the gaps? Netflix spends a $hit ton on content, both in the very expensive deals for older syndicated content and for all of their original content. https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/ne...s-than-entire-tv-industry-in-2005-1203441709/

That makes things very expensive.
Yes, both MS and Netflix spend a ton on getting content on their service. Netflix mainly got there by going in debt, and the issue is we don't know how MS is dealing with getting games, which are more expensive to produce, sell for more, and often last shorter (primarily because of distribution).

True, I have no idea what the price tag is for GP content. However, just looking at the market, there is no lucrative syndication market to compete with on the gaming side of things. Once an older game is on the downswing of the sales curve, there isn't much leverage to net a lucrative deal. I would say money is primarily spent on first party and the bigger splash games they rotate through.

It's common sense man. You can't push a 12 Tflops console to its limits and not exclude current gen and low-end pc at the same time. MS needs to target some kind of middle ground - which seems to be just focusing on 4k and 60 or even 120 fps on Series X. I do wonder, however, how a cross gen 4k/60fps game will compare to a 30fps/1440p ps5 exclusive that isn't bound to any other platform.

If you listen to Phil Spencer - 4k and 60fps are practically the only things the Series X can do, that the Xbox One can't. Of course that is BS but that is basically why the May event was so lack luster.

Well, the equivalent of syndication here would be buying games discounted, which has hugely grown this gen.
Plus, one of GP's major advantages has been its selection of titles.

It's just a matter of MS should better detail their spending, as Netflix does, to get a clear picture. They may still need to push for increased GP monetization.

So this thread is actually yet another "xbox is holding back games" in disguise.

This has been debated over and over and theres even a thread on this forum, by me I might add, that talked to a developer and said that term holding games back has no merit. Because games are not designed in this linear fashion you have made up in your head. What you call common sense is not found to be common in any capacity.

Game pass got me gaming a lot more, playing The Surge 2 on my PC in between work. Or Horizon 4 designing liveries and continue after work downstairs and actually drive the cars.

Also tried, Hellblade (would not have otherwise) on PC, selection is still a bit light compared to on Xbox.

Also had PS Now on PC, realised that saves don't carry over and the desktop is horrific.
Selection is also very weak, which is surprising considering Sony's partnerships.

If anything they aren't pushing it enough. They should even consider bringing it to other devices like the switch of ps4 if that's possible. More advertising also needed. Get it in the hands of everyone

Game Pass itself is great but not enough to be the thing that changes Microsoft's whole plan. xCloud along with GamePass Ultimate however, is something that will truly change the game for MS espescially if they become even more aggressive with selling xCloud like making deals with TV and smartphone companies to put the app pre-installed with a 1-month trial code.

Also, with 10,000,000 subs already (and who knows how many there will be come Wednesday's hearings call) and the least selling console this generation, I think that MS knows they have a winning plan if they cut gold, sell the most powerful console (along with the most affordable) and have a consistently strong lineup of heavy hitting exclusives (not all AAA mind you, but big and encapsulating a wide variety of genres).

The console isn't the entry way into the Xbox eco-system anymore, it's Game Pass Ultimate

In the future i think Gamepass and Sony's version will focus more on b-tier/indie games and less on main exclusives. Especially in Sony's case as they are so lucritive and eventually, the same will be said for Microsoft.

What Microsoft should do, is release a fucking handheld to compliment Xcloud. Have the remote play option like vita. The only time i've wanted Microsoft to copy Nintendo is now, with the Switch. Not the Pseye toy camera, not the Wii, not the kiddy games, just make a handled you fucks!
Why do the hand held when you can use your phone, Ipad, Surface, Xbox, PC or TV? No need for a hand held with so many options available.

So if Sony would've said "Horizon Zero West will be coming to the ps5 as well as the Switch", you honestly think that would have no effect on the ambitions of that game at all?

We've all seen the May conference and we all know growing GP subscribers is way more important to MS than showing off those next gen muscles of the Series X. If you're fine with that, then ok. But if that's the case, how come we're all still expecting a next gen visual spectacle on the 23rd too?

In theory the compressed video bit rate would need to increase as more effects are added to an image to keep it looking clean. But this isn't going to be a radical difference. If you are keeping the resolution the same, the difference in bandwidth is minimal.
and fps.... latency etc etc... it just doesn't work when you go past a certain level. It doesn't even work right now very well.

Sorry but this just seems like a conspiracy theory that you concocted trying to influence other gamers.
Is it not obvious? What was the first thing MS did when they started their console business? Online subscriptions... followed by DLC, MTX and other ways to monetize every aspect of the experience.

They had their eyes set on taking away ownership long ago... much like MS Office is pushed as a subscription now.

Vs paying $60+ for every exclusive and third party game ?

Umm....you still don't have choice with that one. Take a look at the top selling third party games on NPD every month. Vast majority of them are not on gamepass for a reason, or show up way late.

It's value...doesn't matter what box I play on gamepass is most likely the future
Gamepass is incredible. It's the future and no one in the industry is denying it. It will only grow and grow.

Exclusive titles that make up a fraction of Xbox gaming library and a selection of older third party titles that can be rotated out at a moment's notice is far from the future of anything.....it's a nice perk for consumers that compliments the real reason why they buy these boxes in the first place (CoD's, Grant Theft Auto, Fifa, etc)

Your concern only makes sense in a vacuum where Sony, Nintendo, Steam, Epic, Google, Apple, and others don't exist. Gamers are going to find the best value for their money. If Microsoft gradually increases the price of Game Pass subscriptions to $50/month (for example) people will be much less likely to stay subscribed and will instead spend that money in other ecosystems. One thing that Microsoft figured out this gen, is that most gamers have very little brand loyalty.
I disagree, I think they found out that they have absolute brand loyalty of 40 Million or so customers and that these people will do whatever Xbox says is the new thing...

Why would people buy Xbox if they had no brand loyalty? It has nothing you can't get anywhere else...

Stop it.

It's just another Humble Bundle/PS+ type of deal.
Only difference is that MS is putting its own first party games on it day one, and third party games get pulled off the service after a set time.

I prefer owning my games anyways.

More like 5-10 million. I would wager less than 10m for sure. The others are casuals who simply pick up what's available by probability.

GamePass is great value, no doubt about it, but I'm still the type that doesn't want the Netflix type of gaming experience where things come and go. I have no issue with digital, but I want to have a library that is available to be played whenever I wish. So, I haven't subscribed. Personally, I prefer the steam/gog/etc. type of delivery method.
That doesnt make sense to me. You can still buy the game from GP with a discount if you like the game. There's literally no loss for consumers when it comes to GP.

How are they trying to take away ownership when they still give the option of owning the product -- at a discounted price, even? Say what??

This is such a lower effort trolling thread, filled with so many bad faith arguments that only bait.

The reality is GamePass is such a phenomenal offering for gamers on Xbox, PC, and soon for people on the go at a price proposition that is simply impossible to miss out on.

Trying to find its faults and frame it as a negative when there are none in Xbox's eco-system is nothing more that immature jealousy, which shouldn't be the case as most anyone one here can benefit from it as it isn't just an Xbox exclusive feature. But you still have your hardcore warriors that are so stuck in their own way that they will foolishly miss out on it just because it is a Xbox product.

Its like cutting of you own nose to spite your face.

I never said I don't like GP. Hell, I'm loving it. For $1 I practically played all of MS's exclusives. So yes, I would be a fool not to use it.

Only thing I'm saying is how can we expect MS to push next gen visuals on the Series X, when the whole point of GP it to makes their games available for everyone?

I absolutely understand why they're doing it, but they are practically giving up on next gen over something that can easily be copy pasted by Sony or Nintendo. Maybe it hasn't sunk in yet for some people who have absolute faith in the things Phil Spencer's been telling us about scalability. But any pc gamer knows how scalability in graphics settings works, and it's not the same as a generational leap in overall graphics that we typically expect to see when new consoles come out. We saw in May what "optimized for Series X" means and here's another example where even the narrator has a hard time explaining the difference.

Love or hate it. These things are the future of gaming, and MS know it.

However, I think MS are getting ahead of themselves with Xcloud. We're still not quite ready (Maybe in five or so years).

Getting ahead of themselves with streaming? Streaming has already been introduced with PS now and Stadia. Microsoft has taken the slow and steady approach. If anything, Microsoft is jumping into streaming at the right time, not AHEAD. That already happened with mixed success.

Why do the hand held when you can use your phone, Ipad, Surface, Xbox, PC or TV? No need for a hand held with so many options available.
Change your name to Gavon Worst

Gaming, proper console/pc gaming, cannot take place on a phone, ipad, surface or TV. Streaming to a PC is pointless, as Xbox is already on the PC.

Why do you want to hinder the success of Xbox? Do you not like xbox? Do you not like handheld gaming? Do you not want a dedicated Microsoft handheld so that they can dominate the handheld market and take it from Nintendo?

They can just sell a Switch like controller for Surface tablets.
Come on Bernie, you and the rest of the xbox shills can't be this stupid.

Surface tablets, while amazing, are fucking expensive. Then you want me to buy shitty controllers along with it? That's a no from me Dog.

Microsoft should make a dedicated handheld console

Paying for both the sub and the (discounted) game to own seems like a loss to me. I get the value, but as I said, I'd don't prefer the netflix gaming model.

Controller is the best controller I ever had the pleassure to deal with and it will also work on the XSX so when buying a XSX I don't ever need to buy an extra controller as I have 4 laying arround and I use eneloops so I never have to connect the controller to the console or other USB port to charge them and I will never have the problem when the battery eventually dies that the controller becomes worthless.

Really silent console!

Of course I love their IP's like Gears of War, Forza, Forza Horizon, Halo, State of Decay, Ori, Alan Wake. Quantum Break and Fable,
Game Pass, it simply saved me money even for 15 bucks a month it's a steal.

Owning two One X's they're the most powerful and silent console that plays all third party games the best and the XSX will continue that no doubt.

Real 4K output on various games, Both Red Dead Redemption's for example.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player owning 130+ 4K UHD discs myself it's nice knowing my stand alone player refuses to play a disc good chance one of my Xbox's will.

Has a HDMI input so it saves me one on the receiver.

BC let's me have over 650 games at the launch of XSX instantly.

Smart Delivery...I have CP2077 pre-ordered (Got it with the LTD Edition Xbox One X and it wil upgrade for free when the XSX version releases. Besides that all the cross-gen Xbox Studio's games will get that treatmenr.

Their customerservice is heads and shoulders above the rest of tech companies in general. I have dealt with both Sony's (almost non existent and rude) CS and Microsofts CS and it was night and day. They helped me exchange a launch Xbox 360 which was over three years old, for nothing. They shipped me a label and DHL came at the door and picked it up and within a week I got it back and fixed. Meanwhile Sony wanted 150 bucks to fix a broken BR drive 1 week out of warranty. I ditched the brand after that. It's my brother who gave me his PS3 slim when he moved abroad so that's why I still have a working one but otherwise wouldn't.

Also I had no trust after the huge hack that Sony will keep my CC/Paypal info safe so I would buy only physical media for the PS3 when I was 100% digital on the Xbox360.

Xbox is Pro-consumer in a lot of ways. Although they probably don't want it mentioned it's extremely easy to buy giftcards for another region and buy from that countries shop.

MS-Rewards is a fantastic loyalty program that get's you points when buying games or renting/buying movies or tv-shows from their store. Those points can be exchanged for XBOX giftcards. I have over 100 bucks worth of MS reward points accumulated for only using their store to buy my games and movies/tv-shows over the last year.

Oh and did I mention the thing is extremely silent!?

Pushing the narrative that Series X is being held back due to xyz can be slapped on the PS5 as well by claiming its a 9.2TF console and how could such a weak console push on next generation. In reality neither statement is true, but one statement is allowed to be repeated while one isn't, and at this point its nothing more that just baiting and bad faith arguments.

The Series X also isn't going to be help back no matter how much you wish for it, because of scalability, which seems to be a foreign concept here that people can't come to terms with when its 100% going to be the reality.

That tweet is unavailable, but we know for a fact that the Gears 5 Series X will have
  • Higher resolution textures
  • Improved anisotropic filtering
  • Higher-resolution volume fog
  • Higher quality depth of field
  • Extremely far draw distances with high level of object detail
  • Shadow resolution and shadow distance
  • High-quality screen-space reflections
  • Post processing improvements like bloom, lens flare, light shafts, ect.
And possible a 120FPS mode for multiplayer. Those are next generation graphics pushed to the max. I have no idea what your expecting from next generation graphics, if this isn't. Gears 5 is already a phenomenal looking game with these additions it is easily a next generation game.

I'm a huge xbox fan, i wont deny it. I'm so much of a fan, that i hate blind shills who cost me my favourite gaming platform; Xbox. If Microsoft would have listened to fans like me, they wouldn't have released kinect or fucked up the xbone.

and here i am again, saying Microsoft should throw lots and lots of resources in to making a super powerful, super slick handheld to take the fight to Nintendo. This time they will win, big time. People want dedicated handhelds and the market has never been more stale.

Don't confuse a device that can stream games with one that is dedicated to gaming. Otherwise, you end up with a device that can do nothing well and it becomes a turd like the xbone

Where is this belief that people want a super powerful handheld coming from? I sure as hell haven't asked for it and never seen anyone ask for it.

It's silent alright... but the reasons you think it's silent and the reasons I think an Xbox is silent are very different! LOL

Where is this belief that people want a super powerful handheld coming from? I sure as hell haven't asked for it and never seen anyone ask for it.
Switch numbers?

XSX can act like a server so you stream from your own wifi, same as PSvita does/did. Xcloud can be the streaming app, only included with gamepass.

Sell a handheld, market xcloud, sell Gamepass subs etc etc. It writes itself

You aren't making a super powerful handheld for $299. And you sure aren't going to get people to buy $499 and up hand helds.
