Should Rockstar's Next Game Have a Female Main Protagonist

maybe using "should" was not a good idea

what i meant was would you like if rockstar's next game had a female main protagonist

can a mod fix the title if is that big of a deal

"Should"? No.

"Should" the main protagonist be male? Also no.

I have no preference. I'm more concerned that they make a good game this time. (I'm in the extreme minority, but I didn't find GTA5 remotely fun... nor did I find RDR remotely fun. With R* games I always find myself wanting to like them, but haven't quite pulled it off since GTA3.

Honestly the character should be whatever gender Rockstar wants it to be. The creators create and we should not be telling them how to do their job.

Hey Sega, Sonic should be changed to a pearlescent color becuase it would look cool. K, thx.

Male or female; it honestly doesn't matter to me. What's more important to me is if it had drop-in co-op for the campaign; you know like Volition and others have been doing in open world games for many years now.

I think your best chance for a female protagonist in a Rockstar game would be if Red Dead 3 followings GTA V and has multiple protagonists.

Rockstar tends to write very traditionalist/old style film plotlines for their games, and women have appeared in that type of Old West story before as central characters.

I think they're a lot less likely to do it in GTA on the basis crime movies are usually overwhelmingly men in terms of the people who are actually going out and killing people.

I'm not convinced they'll ever actually ship a new IP at the rate they're going, so I'm only addressing these two franchises for now, but the same general concept applies of looking at prior notable films in similar thematic genres.

I've never understood this argument. What does it mean exactly?

It feels like this position is saying that all characters are male by default and if you're going to have a female lead you have to earn it somehow.

If Rockstar had wanted one of GTA V's main characters to be a woman, would it really have affected the story? Like, any one of them could have been female and it would've been fine to me.

I am not saying anything. All I am saying if they can do it well and write a good female character then sure, do it. Females are not just caricatures of male characters in a different shape. If they cannot, then they shouldn't and they shouldn't be pressured into doing so. I don't understand what is it that you don't understand.

The purpose of making a game is to make a good game that people will enjoy, and not to make a political statement.

That didn't take long.

Take long for what, exactly?

Only if it makes sense. I'm all for female characters, but they shouldn't be shoehorned in games just because they are female. It needs to be meaningful and thought out. So I mean if they do it just to do it then I wouldn't really support it.

After Red Dead Redemption I did hear rumours from within that a possible idea for the next Red Dead title would be a female bounty hunter in the 1860's and the game would take inspiration from Bully by having the game spread across seasons and that the main story would take place over the course of a few years.

That was just one of four or five they were throwing around at the time, sadly I don't know what they decided to go with as all focus was pretty much set to GTAV and many projects were shelved for the time being.

If they go with a solo protagonist, I'd love to see a woman (but wouldn't be upset if not), and I'd love to see it be someone with no problem being the kind of character GTA fits. Not like Trevor, mind you, but someone comfortable in the life. Give me a cool crime story.

If they go with multiple people again, I think not having a woman would be pretty shitty though.

Does Rockstar have any female writers?

Does it matter? It doesn't take a woman to write a good female protagonist. It helps, but by no means required.

For instance, Kotaro Uchikoshi wrote 999/VLR, and
June/Zero
is both the hingepin character and sort of a major antagonist.

If they can write a good story with a female protagonist then great. But don't write in a female character just for the sake of having female characters.
Why would they have to jump through hoops just to explain why you're not playing as a white male

if she's a good character and they can make it work then sure

I won't be persuaded to buy it or not buy it based on the gender of the main protagonist

It would be cool to play as a female character in a new Bully game. Otherwise rockstars games are really violent and a female main protagonist just wouldn't fit imo without forcing it. If Rockstar continues with the three main characters route for the next GTA, however, if one of them was female in that situation it would be fine.

Yeah I'd definitely be more interested if they did.

I still can't believe that out of three main characters for V, all of them were men.

Start a new GTA game with one of the old male protagonists... Trevor would work perfectly.

He is driving his car .... and stops to get a prostitute. She fucks him and when she gets out, he gets out too ... with a bat.

He goes to hit her but she kicks his ass, take his weapon and then you start playing as her as she goes to kill her pimp.

Make the story a mix of Griselda Blanco and Claudia Ochoa Felix from them on

Why not just make the main character like Shepard from Mass Effect where its an established character that the player chooses the appearance and gender for? Would go a long way towards making me buy the next one after how bad GTA 5 was (imo, I know I'm in the minority).

this can work

There's no should or should not with that imo. They should do whatever the fuck they want.

I want to agree, but fact is that these decisions are not made in a vacuum. You've got the business side to consider on how financially sound this is, your (direct or indirect) statement that is being made with such a decision, the possible implications, and the consumers' reaction to consider.

Then after all this, maybe one can finally think about how to go about this creatively. Our imagination's the limit, really.

Can anyone think of a well written female character in any of R*'s games? Bonnie is the only one that comes to mind. but yea sure they should use a female character simply cause GTA has a lot of power.

Yes, it should. And if it's done well it will be awesome.

I'm getting really tired of the "What's the reason?" Argument. There really doesn't need to be one. Just do it. And if it's done well, it's done well.

If they have multiple characters again, it might be fun to have a Bonnie and Clyde or Natural Born Killers style male/female couple.

When you're grounded in a gritty, realistic crime drama it's difficult to reconcile the difference in each gender's probable roles in crime. Are there gangbangers that send young women to collect drug money? Has the mob sent women to steal cars and get protection money? How often do you hear of them donning masks and robbing banks, or beating the shit out of rival gang members with baseball bats? Organized crime is a very male dominated activity. Especially the violent bits. Generally you're going to see them doing surveillance, monitoring turf, hiding weapons and drugs rather than using the weapons and selling the drugs.

I mean, that could be a game, but it wouldn't be a GTA game.

Red Dead? Yeah. Sure. I don't see why you couldn't have a female protagonist in a Red Dead game. Plenty of women were outlaws in the old west. They're just not the gangsters you see in GTA games.

Rockstar has never had a stellar record with female characters, aside from the Red Dead Revovler/Redemption games but I'd love to see them try.

I wonder how Rockstar would write a female MC. It would definitely depend on the game, because Trevor is so different from John Marston.

Heck, give me at least, 3-4 games with female MC's so I can see how awesome they get. I want female John Marstons, I want female Trevors, etc.

I think you may have an oddly naive idea of how violent and criminal women can be, and are...

First results from google on female mob bosses might help you..
