Should Rockstar's Next Game Have a Female Main Protagonist

I'm down for one now. I feel like they can make a compelling yet terrible person we all will learn how to love for being complex but shitty as a human being.

If they can write a good story with a female protagonist then great. But don't write in a female character just for the sake of having female characters.

Totally agree, I hate it when characters feel shoehorned into a game. Rockstar has some pretty great writers, so there's no doubt they'd do a great job.

A Red Dead game with a female protagonist would be interesting, considering the era and area of the country.

I just wish they would let you choose your character, with a character creator. Pick who you want.

Problem is, they would have to do Voice work for both male and female characters. You just dont want that to end up like NBA 2k16 where no matter how you create your character, they have a street dialect that sounds ridiculous.

So my idea will probably never work!

It's time! I think if she can be just as psychotic and evil as some of the characters they've written, it could be wonderful. I want ruthless!

Who cares, they should have a lead that fits their story. If it's a female, fine. If it's a male, fine. If it's the brave little toaster, probably not fine. Just have it do it makes sense, that's all that should matter.

so something like mass effect than

No I don't think they should do it just because

what do you mean just because?

is not like they going make a story for a male character than swap in a female in the last min

They make more than enough money on the game to do it. This would be a bad reason not to do it.

Yeah...they don't exactly have a great history of writing good female characters to be honest.

GTAV sure wasn't nice. Frank's ex and that woman Trevor kidnapped were both likeable and respectable characters, though.

I always thought CJ's sister in San Adreas was great. Several women in GTAIV were just, you know, like normal people. When Rockstar actually wants to, they can write good, human female characters.

I think it'd be cool if the next GTV had two female leads in their 20s wrecking all kinds of shit that could play off each other, either as villains or best friends.

That would be fucking great. I loved the ranch owner in the first Red Dead, someone who could hold her own in a "man's world".

Yea Bonnie was my favorite character after John Marston. It would be pretty amazing to have a female character in a western setting. A renowned bounty hunter or even a well known and feared criminal.

Yeah.

GTA London (one can dream) with a policeman in his last few months before retirement (our leading man) trying to catch a notorious cat thief (our leading lady). Having two protagonists who are actively working against each other is something I'd really like to see in one of these games.

Of course, I don't expect well-eritten characters from Rockstar, especially female characters.

"Should" is the wrong word.

Still, it's clear many would welcome such a decision, if it was pulled off well.
Get a female writer in there who enjoys their games, and let her go to town.

A female lead "for the sake of it", or to "make a statement" would be a bad idea.
That said, in the current climate it's hard not to see a female-only protag as a statement, especially when it's a company with such an established record as R*.

Hopefully one day this won't be such a hot-button topic and we can all settle down and embrace games/characters/roles of every type without assuming some hidden agenda.

Sure I'd like to see it, but I'm thinking not a chance in hell, considering Rockstar's demographic. I imagine it would be like Call of Duty having a female protagonist.

you guys that are worried about representation know that Rockstar can hire writers for that sole purpose right? It's not like they don't have a lot of employees on every department specialized on things. I don't see why it would be different for characters. Nowadays it is a matter of whether they decide to do so or not, being able to do it right for a big company is just a matter of hiring the competent talent for the job.

Should they? No, they should do what they want. They shouldn't be pressured into making a game with a female protagonist just because. If what they want happens to be a game with a female protagonist, cool, I'd be interested in seeing what they do with that.

I don't understand all these conditionals of "only if it makes sense." Who cares? A male character doesn't, by default, make more "sense" than a female character. There shouldn't be more inherent scrutiny placed on the reason behind a main character's gender if they're female than if they're male.

If you're asking me, should the Rockstar team write a specific role starring a female lead or buy a good script with a female lead, I say, why the hell not?

But the MC needs to have depth. I want to see something on par with BG&E again before I die.

Should? No, why they should?
If they want to do it they must be able to do it without any problem but they shouldn't be pressured to do it.

The character should be interesting and well-written. Being white male straight and handsome or being black trans and ugly makes zero difference. Neither is intrinsically good or bad.

Definitely, it's time.

Although I want the next GTA game to have a female protagonist.

But I don't want that to be their next game.

So if the next Rockstar game has a female protag, cool, but come ooooon GTA.

.

I think if they've got the story for it, absolutely. I've always felt there's untapped potential for a female-focused narrative in the GTA universe.

Should it? Umm I would never say that. It shouldn't have to. If Rockstar did it then great but not if it's something they should do. It has to be something they want to do.
