Sigh. Returning to DAoC...

Yep, even after hitting 60 in WoW with my Warlock, I miss large scale PVP that has lasting effects on the server through the actions the sides take in RvR.

And then I saw this on the Camelot Herald:
"On Thursday, August 4th, Guinevere will be clustered with Nimue and Percival."

It hasn't happened yet (some backend issue prevented it), but since Percival (my sever) is being clustered with Guinevere I can kill some old friends in RvR.

And there's another new expansion coming. And they're testing a center island that'll be placed between the 3 realms:

So I ran down to Fry's and picked up Catacombs for $20 and am reinstalling the whole thing now.

Sigh.

i had the same problem with WoW, its a great game, better than DAoC in almost every way, except one the most important ways, the PvP ...i wish Blizz woulda just copied DAoC RvR exactly ...haha.

I may play on the Classic servers once my Thane dings 50. Can you /level on them?
 
no cant /level on the classics yet...try to keep things equal with people who havent played or something, dont remember what they said about it :P.

shouldnt be hard to get to 20 with catacombs now anyway, i hear its a breeze (well it was before too, after you got past the hell that is 1-5 ~_~ )

Hm.

Maybe I'll make a Friar on Lamorak. Although I kinda want to try out a Vampiir. :\
 
Vampiir is pretty sweet, pretty easy to level too, so might be a good choice....or a valewalker ! loved my VW, the styles on that class are just fucking amazing =/ ....way better than a lameass friar ;)
 
Yeah, the 2 Classic servers they made pretty much filled up instantly, and the 3rd classic server is allready the 4th most populated server around :P ....im suprized its still below merlin actualy...merlin players must be crazy people or somethin.
 
Sweet, i played with Vamp a little in Catacombs beta, but then i quit for WoW...so i dont even have Catacombs yet. Im in a weird place right now though, I kinda wanna play DAoC again, but i dont think i should play MMOs right now, :P

Compared to WoW it's just nice to log into a game and not immediately see "Douchebag yells: Im gona rape u fag!#!!#"
 
Didn't this game get a graphical upgrade recently? Any pics of what it looks like now, I remember it looking rather dated - like Asheron's Call 1 level dated.

Yea, they update the character models, put in high res terrain and city textures, and redid all the lighting for the most part. Still looks a bit dated, but looks much better than before.

Each expansion added some kind of graphical upgrade to the game.

HAHA :lol , so true :P ...DAoC has its dicks though, just a lot less of them and they seem FAR FAR worse. the community in DAoC just seems a lot better, must be becuase you might need some armour/SCing from them later, or you want help protecting your keep or something...i just remember the assholes in DAoC to be a little less anoying, haha.


Graphic wise the game is pretty good, they are pretty good at keeping there game looking pretty good, its not as nice as WoW, or as technicaly demanding as EQ2, but it looks pretty good for how old it is....dunno if they have fixed how the cloaks sway in catacombs though =/....bothered the hell outa me in the beta, WoW capes bother me as well, but at least i could turn those off :P


More i talk about the game, the more i want to play it =/ ....
 
heh I still have 6 level 60's on guinevere... maybe a good time to try and sell. Prolly worth at least $10.00 now rofl.

How did you get level 60 characters in a game where the level cap doesn't go that hight? :D
 
haha, nice...you got to 5 quick, allways takes me like 8 hours, since i hate it :P


do the arms change the same colour as the face now? before my Shar vamp had a blue/white face and orange arms, looked really weird :P

Dunno, haven't taken off my arms yet.

It took no time at all to get to 5 by doing solo Catacombs instance tasks.
 
DAoC is still the best MMO for people that want to fight alongside and against other people in a way that is inclusive, interesting, and consensual.

Never could go back-even with server clusters and a couple of *extremely* pimped out characters, I just can't see going back unless I could hook up with some of my old TL friends (Mythic is the ONLY big-share company that handles commuinty relations in a decent manner, BTW.)

I agree with everything you just said :P. i mean hell, Mythic made servers that took out a whole expansion and pretty much fixed the bot problem, both of these actualy make them lose some money, since people wont need to run 2 accounts, and have 1 less expansion pack to buy .....of course it also made them a lot of money, by getting thousands of people to come back and play the game :p ....its amazing how they actualy pay attention to the playerbase.


And the RvR/PvP is unmatched by anygame out there imo, actual reasons to RvR, so you can get into Darkness Falls, get more XP and coin from mobs ...plus you can do it when you want, you arent forced into it.

DAoC just has a serious class problem, WAY to many of them, and some need serious boosts to become as good as the newer ones added.

not to mention it lacks any shapeshifters ! i mean what the fuck ! LET ME SHAPESHIFT >< ...stupid DAoC Druids...
 
They added a new Tutorial, which is actually pretty good (with good narration as well).

I heard they added a bunch more faces/hair stuff since catacombs launch.....is there any good Sylvan ones? my sylvan VW used to have a beard, and it looked awesome, but there wasnt any good beards in Catacombs, they were just a few leaves sticking out here and there :(

I think just the leaf beard, really didn't look very well.

I'm also glad the buff bots are gone on the Classic servers.

I'll never forget doing some RvR on Percival (a RP server) and Mythic polices the RP server names VERY VERY VERY well. Well this group of Hibs from one of the non-RP servers decided they wanted to roll Mids on Percival to check it out. One of them had a Kobald buff bot named "Buffffffffffffffffffffffffffff"

Yeah. That didn't last very long.

...seriously though, yeah they do get rid of a lot of names, and pretty quickly most of the time, but i also saw some terrible names that shoulda been changed for years but never did, cant get them all i guess.


sucks about the Sylvan though :( they were one of my favorite races, then they just ruined them for me by not adding very good hair stuff :( ..... they ruined shar too, by giving them saggy tits =/ ....on the males i mean ><

I don't know if you've ever heard this story or not, but it backs up your point very well.

This guy discovered some kind of dupe bug, but he never used it himself after it was discovered. He alerted Mythic to the bug, and since he did not abuse it and just brought it to their attention; Mythic flagged his and his wife's account free for life and they are among the first invited into every single Mythic beta until the end of time.

You won't see any other MMO company doing that.

Actually, those later screenshots look nice, and I actually prefer its look to WoW from the screenshots I've seen. Of course, I prefer FFXI's look over WoW's as well - WoW is just a tad bit too cartoony for me, I like a bit more of a realistic styling to the graphics. I'll have to download a video of DaOC when I'm at work tomorrow though and look at the animation in the game, since I really do like the animation in WoW even though the art style really grates with me.
 
Interesting...a friend of mine was completely sold on WoW for months, but now he has cancelled his WoW account and gone back to DAoC as well. He said WoW was too PvE-focused for his taste.

Can allways try it out too, 14 day trial for it right on the site, you wont really get to see much of the game from 14 days though, but after youve seen the videos you can play it a bit and test it out.

Eh, the animation hasn't changed much at all since the original release (despite the new models) and it's disappointing that they didn't do new animations to go with the new models:

Yea, there are people going back. Even EQ, CoH, SWG, and EQII are starting to get people back after the very quick burnout that comes with WoW.

WoW will always be around because of the billions of rabit B.net kiddies who infest the servers like a rotting plague, but the other MMOs still have life in them.

The new "Classic" servers in DAoC are really popular. They launched two, they got overloaded, and they needed to launch a third that's starting to fill up.
 
Ill give DAOC this much they had a pvp server that fucking mattered, wow is superior to daoc in every friggin way except the pvp is retarded , never have i played a game with no penalty for dying atleast make me buy back my health if i get ganked.

to bad PvP is the most important thing to me ...well once i hit the level cap anyway :P (or once i hit 24/35 in DAoC :P )

Well in DAoC you can actually LEVEL in the battlegrounds. You get experience for PVP kills.
 
The screen shots intrigue me.

Mana, compare/contrast the WoW Rogue with the DAoC Rogue/Infiltrator?

Are there any other stealth options? Scout maybe? I am clueless about this game.

D/L'ing the 14 trial now btw.

The really made this work out well back when they boosted the XP for RvR kills. It's frighteningly easy to take a few days and level/RvR at the same time (and early cheap RAs can help out a lot of classes in their PvE efforts).

The classic servers are extremely popular becuase ToA added a HUGE "level time" between level 50 and RvR-ready. It was relatively easy pre-TOA for people to get to 50 in a couple of weeks of heavy play, get some crafted/SC'd stuff (man, I have a LGM SC'er, talk about pain), and get some basic RAs in a week or two worth of RvR with a regular group.

ToA was a fantastic expansion of the game and was one that was really needed to satisfy the demands of a number of customers. I'm glad they are reconciliing those customers that REALLY didn't like the TOA endgame (usually the ones that like to tool around with different characters, or prefer an old-school RvR experience without the truly broken classic RAs (group purge and speed of sound).
 
Let me stress this to no end , i meant the PVP SERVERs in daoc (andred/mordred) , otherwise DAOC cant even lick WoW's nutsack in pvp, I dont give a damn how l33t merlin/lancelot/MLF were, frontiers were lame and so were those server types. Basically it went like this "oh god im gonna take your keep...im max level but i get...xp bonus now and 22 more silver from mobs ..now dont you take back that keep when we go back to our realm or ill have to go back to using my armorsmith bot to trinket DF gear for a plat a day" please. Everyone and their mother wanted to invade the realms and take the relics from some fortified spot in an opposing realm not have some succession of ninja raids at 3am. Now the pvp server on the other hand where it was all guild vs guild was the best, i never EVER had to fight some dumb mob to level or get money after level 15. The keeps and relics were a part of it, but ganking people that wanted to pvp all day was the reason to be on there, was pure heaven.

The WoW rogue is a much more complete character, then again WoW classes, as a rule, are more well-rounded than DAoC classes by design. The concept is very much the same-surprise and kill before the enemy can recover. However, Camelot has immunity timers instead of dimishing returns as a way of handling repeated crowd control. In WoW, you have a fairly large number of ways of incapacitating a character, often more than once in a row. In Camelot, it's one stun and that's it. Granted, you can do a ton of damage in that time, but usually the other person will have more of a chance to react.

Archers are, or at least were before Catacombs, godly siege characters. They are very, very weak in melee but can hit extremely hard *when well equipped and played well*. They are very potent at lower level RvR because of the lack of high quality armor that the other players have. Their potency levels off a bit as you get to the endgame.

I don't know anything about the Catacombs classes, since I've never played them (save a brief flirt with a Valkyrie).

DAoC Infiltrator/Shadowblade/Nightshade play a lot like the Rogues of WoW, except imagine you have a LOT more Energy, but it doesnt regen (unless you have special spells or realm abilities) ...oh and take out any reason for a group to ever want you in PvP other than high damage, and add in the ability to climb over walls into castles ( only in special wall climbing areas)

the classes are pretty close though, but i havent played one of the DAoC ones to 50 or a Rogue to 60, just have friends that have both :P


other stealth classes are the archers: Scout/Ranger/Hunter

Scout is more of a sniper, Ranger is kind of inbetween a Nighshade and a scout, and Hunter is pretty close to the WoW hunter, there bow aspect is a little lower than the other 2 archers, but they get pets and stuff, no traps for any of the archers either.


Minstrel is the last stealther, its like a bard type class, plays music to run fast/help heal/stuff like that, has a little crowd control and does a little melee.

When I was doing the Albion thing (I did Hib and Mid first, so I have an excuse), one of the ten billion gank groups I ran with had an INSANELY good high realm rank infiltrator running the assist train (this was post-TOA and pre-NF). He'd snare poison the healer/caster and him and two mercs would just flatten the poor sod in five seconds. Was nutso good.

yeah, we had one like that too.....wtf was his name...cant remember now, he was in Sacred Fury though ! i remember that much ~_~


of course some groups will love to have an inf in the group, but most of the time they dont. not that it matters much, cause most Infs are duoing/small grouping with other stealthers anyway :P

edit: that was supposed to say PvE too btw...but oh well, i dont wanna change it now since you quoted it :P
