Silent Hill HD Collection |OT| Programmed in Smoke Signals

They sure don't. To be fair, this brand was damaged long, long ago though. I'd say right after Silent Hill 4 there was no going back. I mean, making a survival horror game and then suddenly turning it into a Silent Hill game because the heads didn't have confidence in a new IP says it all.

Is there any actual proof of this? Every time I see konami people talk about it it's said that it was supposed to be a new IP early on in the concept stage but changed during that to a silent hill, however a quite a bit different SH.

Doesn't Konami make some badass baseball games in Japan. I always see it do well on those sale charts GAF likes to froth over.

Anyway, something I still never really understood to this day - why in the flying fuck did Konami internally abandon the Silent Hill franchise to begin with? Just because of a relatively somewhat disappointing yet still good SH4? It's not like the company is brimming with million sellers.

Mobile games.

Really, like 75% of Konami's revenues come from mobile social games and pachislot machines. Console games are almost an afterthough.

Cant seem to get 1920x1080 to work, i have SH2 director's cut. I patch, then i start the game, it uses the game's resolution from the settings... Any help?

Go into the actual game, don't alter the in-game settings, otherwise it'll revert back to original 4:3 resolutions.

We just booted up the Born From A Wish scenario for Maria on the 360. The lipsynch is off in the very first opening cutscene. Goddamn dude.

EVERYTHING in Born From a Wish is out of synch. Maria's dialogue is out of synch. Maria knocking on Ernest's door is out of synch. Hell, sometimes there's not even any sound of Maria knocking at all when she clearly is.

Holy HOT damn.

Just go to in-game setting and select 640x480 in resolution (don't worry you'll get the resolution you selected in the patch).

If he used the "Squ1zZy_Silent_Hill_2_Resolution" even if he changes any settings in-game the resolution won't revert back to 4:3 resolutions. (That only happens with Silent Hill 3).

AFAIK there's not any conclusive evidence either way, but the most widely accepted theory is, as you say, that SH4 began development as a new horror IP, but Konami eventually decided against releasing a new IP, as they were afraid it might not be viable, so they told Team Silent to turn it into a new SH game.

Anyway, something I still never really understood to this day - why in the flying fuck did Konami internally abandon the Silent Hill franchise to begin with? Just because of a relatively somewhat disappointing yet still good SH4? It's not like the company is brimming with million sellers.

Diminishing sales. SH2 sold worse than SH1 IIRC, SH3 sold worse than SH2 etc.

This closing line from the Destructoid review sums up this collection perfectly:

Destructoid said:
Incomplete, glitchy, and visually degraded, Silent Hill HD Collection is Konami's greatest insult to the series.

The bolded part is really saying something, considering how awful Konami has treated the SH series since Team Silent disbanded.

Born From a Wish is a TOTAL disaster. Everything is pitch black. It's like the goofballs who did this didn't realize Maria never gets a flashlight in her game.

I am beyond livid with this entire bullshit. Once I capture enough footage to make my "THIS GAME SUCKS" video on this travesty, I'm trading this in to go towards Devil May Cry HD Collection. I'm never touching another game with Konami's name on it ever again.

That seems reasonable for a game IGN gave 9 out of 10 overall and 10 out of 10 for sound.

i "patch" the game, boot sh2, and everything is 4:3. 800*600 i believe.

Lol. The sad thing is that I respect and revere Silent Hill 2. I could never give this collection a favorable rating for what it did to one of the most important games of all time. Just my take on it.

I think I'd still rather people play it than not play it.

I've thought about this for a bit, and I have concluded that I would rather someone never play the games at all than play this collection. Honestly, they need to play it as intended or not at all, IMO.

The ports are a mess, but they're still not so completely awful I'd discourage people from playing them if they had no other means of ever playing SH 2 and 3. I think the only port I might do that for would be that infamous Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis port Sega shat out for GBA, where they managed to rape the poor hedgehog so bad he had an anal prolapse.

Once you've patched (choosing the resolution you want) the game and booted it enter in the options menu and change the 800*600 resolution to 640*480. It should show the resolution you chosed before in the patch.

It... seems like I should have read this topic before buying the game. I bought the 360 version new (it is still unopened), but I really don't have easy access to the PS2 titles at this point. Is the 360 version really that much of an abomination?

I went to Gamestop and asked about Silent Hill HD...dude said "You mean Downpour?" I thought he had said "Downport" and I was like "Lol you heard about that too"..

They are bad ports, but the framerate is better than the PS3 version, at least. If you have no other means of playing SH 2 and 3, then I'd say go for it. The ports might be bad, but the games are still good in and of themselves.

If you absolutely can't get the original games, then keep it.

But make no mistake: these are absolutely terrible port jobs. Everything is way too fucking dark, but that could be fixed in a patch. It's very obvious what little of a shit they gave about this went towards the main SH2 game. The SH2 side story and SH3 are both total technical disasters on both platforms (with the PS3 version being worse).

i only have 800x600 and 1024x768 as available resolutions though.

Honestly guys, I think Downpour is more of a disgrace technically. SH2 in the HD collection runs at LEAST 5000% better than Downpour does.

No one is debating that. Everybody had low expectations for Downpour, so no one really is shocked by that. The issue is that both HD collection games run like fucking shit compared to their original versions. With SH2, we're talking a 10-YEAR-OLD GAME. With SH3, we're talking an 8-YEAR-OLD GAME.

And these 8 to 10 year old games are running on hardware that makes the PS2 seem like a glorified abacus to boot.

So what Konami did to this poor IP so far

-Killing Team Silent.
-Hiring totally shitty developers to make bad prequels and sequels. (one of them run at 5fps or something)
-Shat on the original SH making that abomination "re-imagining" called Shattered Memories.
-Destroying SH 2 and 3 in the eyes of newcomers because of this horrible HD collection.
-Pretend that SH4 The Room don't exist and cut it from the HD collection.

They know they just can stop making them and ignoring the fans right? just like Ganbare Goemon,ISS, Suikoden and many other..no need to torture the IP like this.

Capcom?

Exactly. It's like watching a colorized version of Citizen Kane.

Hmm, I think for this example to work it'd have to be colorizing a film that was black and white on purpose, not because it had to be. Like Clerks, I guess.

How about a digitally remastered version of The Mist that removes the mist somehow so you can see the sound stage walls? :p

I just looked through my collection one more time and seemingly, I actually still do have the PS2 copies. But I thought to myself "I might as well try to hook up my PS2 to see how it works and to see how the games look on my big screen." So after about 20 minutes, I find the necessary cords for my PS2 and booted up SH2 while using component cables for my PS2 on the HD big screen.

Sure, SH2 doesn't look great, but it boots up fine enough and the fog effect still looks cool. Booted up SH3, and that looks and runs fine as well. Looks ridiculously grainy, but I think that is the intent. So to put a long story short, I located the old PS2 titles.

I still am pretty curious on the new voice-acting, though (but I would rather not have to watch an entire youtube playthrough on it). Is the 360 version still overwhelmingly inferior to the PS2 versions?

Inferior? Yes, absolutely. Overwhelmingly inferior? No.

Playing though SH3 now for myself on the 360 version.

Holy shit, ALL of the voice synching is about a full second off. The dialogue starts before their lips even move. This is beyond horrible.

The random framerate drops are still there, although obviously not as bad as the PS3 version.

I haven't seen this anywhere, but SH3 seems to have this weird motion blur with everything. SH2 definitely didn't have it. Anyone else noticed?

Also, Heather's new voice is fucking terrible. She sounds like a 40-year-old woman at times, especially when Douglas is driving her to Silent Hill.

Even more, there's this scratchy shit that happens with the audio almost every time I hit a save point. I'm already in the main Silent Hill area, and only twice have I saved without the audio scratching out.

Who the fuck was in charge of this? Why the fuck was this approved?

WHY WHY WHY
