Sim City is now down, the maintenance message is amazing

Ubisoft backed away from always online drm after much criticism.

Diablo 3 and Sim City is the only one that currently use it to my knowledge and both games are getting crap for it. I don't see Blizzard changing its position on D3 but I could see EA cave and offer an offline mode.

The cloud gaming I can see happen if we are still gaming on closed systems with access to unlimited bandwidth.

Well, to be honest whether the processing takes place in the cloud or not is immaterial, it's effectively the same if you are forced to be online at all times *cough* Durango rumours *cough*.

It's only going to happen if gamers let it.

When it does, don't blame the corporations for trying to nickel and dime you.
The publishers always make the first move though. They push this crap onto games/series people love, and it creates a situation where people either put up with it or avoid playing something they've been looking forward to; in this case for nearly 10 years. The fact that the game is actually pretty good makes it an even worse situation.

So yes, voting with our wallets would help, but wallet protests are going to be few and far between. What will help is the outcry. People are making a hell of a lot of noise over this; fans, forums, press and so on. And this is the best way to sway them.

In theory this game could be patched to work offline; the simulation is client side as demonstrated by the game continuing to function for a while after losing internet connection. I'm not sure they ever will, but they'll sure as hell think twice about this strategy in future single player games.

EA needs to dish out some origin gift cards or something man. This is straight up bullshit. An apology isn't even good enough. They burned us SimCity fans hard with this shitty release and the always connected bullshit. There's no reason this game needs to be connected to the net all the damn time. Their implementation of always on is completely flawed. They'd be better off letting us run our own personal servers for regions we create than having to rely on their shit to keep us synched with friends.

Fuck you EA and you Maxis pad.

Where's all the critic reviews at? This should be going for one of the worst scores ever but is currently sitting at an 82 metacritic. Let's get on it!

82 really? LOL, it was like 92 before launch. Oops guys, guess that means no bonuses for the team, sorry.

Why are people talking about cracks? Isn't that against the rules here?

They are talking about cracking the games they purchased, not pirating the software.

It won't work anyways, that's the idea with these types of online games. If there was a way to crack Diablo 3 fuck yea I would. Playing with 120ms+ of latency every time fucking sucks.

they're talking about it because it might be the only avenue to play the damn game. Its so fukn sad that legit customers have to resort to praying for a crack to play a game bought legit

Well cloud gaming is different to me. Your just remotely playing the game, that is a legitimate market to try to exploit imo. Consumers don't have to spend money on expensive hardware, installations, etc and only need a the bare minimum device that supports connecting to the service. If its the future of gaming I doubt it, but I would not be surprised if it becomes a reality for a certain group of people.

Always online drm in this case you literally have the core files installed on your system and you cant play it without being online, which we all agree is shitty.

I've never understood this argument. It's as if you believe that corporations are justified in doing anything they can get away with and the only blame falls on the consumers who don't get make those decisions in the first place.

Sure consumers have power to stop something like this but so does the corporation who is doing it.

It's like telling a kid that they are expected to be as naughty as possible.

Always on DRM and digital downloads have reduced my needs for cracks but I used to use them all the time just so I didn't have to keep boxes of cd's/dvd's next to my PC, it's already swamped with PS3 and other game cases.

EA Hires 100s of Chinese Spammers to Post Positively About SimCity’s Always Online Requirement

http://www.p4rgaming.com/?p=1473

On gaming boards like GameFAQs, IGN and NeoGAF, new registrations have spiked causing some forum administrators to shut down registration. They have reported that a majority of the IPs originate from China and that those users have only posted in threads regarding SimCity complaints.

They're coming.

DRM: Ruining gaming, one byte at a time.

So if this is the worst way to fight piracy, what is the best way to fight piracy?
make a good game and price it reasonably.

there will always be pirates period.. Its better to appeal to your demographic than to push them away by punishing them with always on DRM

This is a good point. Hopefully devs will see this and not sign a contract with the proverbial devil so to speak.
EA is putting more effort into their spin of the situation than actually fixing the problems, that should tell you something.

Hello my name is Steve.

I am very excited about the SimCity by EA and Maxis. It is so fun to build a city and look at my sims. It is just like my sims 3 family but more! The best part is I can play with my friends online through EA's world class online infrastructure made by gamers for gamers. Like me.

Wow, that's the least convincing news article I've seen in a while. Is that a satirical site? I'm not joking, that article reads like half-assed Onion take on gaming minus the jokes. The last line seems especially unlikely.

Yeah its fake I searched the name citybuilder229 and quotes and they all lead back to the same article no where else on net.

This fake. Simcity is just good game. Their's no need too lie about it.

I don't know why, but seeing these two near each other just made me laugh...

Anyway, I'd have bought this game if i hadn't seen this thread... Thanks GAF. I mean that. I hadn't been following any info on SimCity. It's the type of game I'd want on my laptop to enjoy as a time waster when I'm out. As I'm not always near an internet connection, you guys just saved me from wasting my money.

We really need a sticky or something that shows upcoming or existing games that incorporate this kind of anti-consumer DRM. People need to be informed.

Haha, they're turning off "non-critical" game features, including leaderboards, achievements and region filters.

How about turning off the DRM, idiots.

I feel so terrible for some of the people at Maxis. Running around trying to fix all this crap. The ones that are trying to fix it almost certainly didn't make the call to make it that way in the first place. And if anyone gets let go for underperforming it will be them before some suit that sent some email about yes we need to not have piracy always online yes.

They can implement a patch that allows off-line play.

From what I have noticed is that things like trade between cities is determined by the server . So they can't just put out a patch.

Heck they are implementing patches to their servers to fix messed up trade.
