Just ordered the collector's edition from Game.co.uk for £42.99. Comes in a (hopefully) nice looking steelbook.
 
I was disappointed, I wanted that snazzy steelbook, especially as I'm already buying a physical copy of the game because that's the cheapest way to buy it. But the steelbook isn't available in the US.

Is this true?

Maxis originally told us that SC2013's tile size would be 2 km by 2 km, or about the same size as the 'medium' tile from SC4. I originally found this to be mildly acceptable, as SC4's medium tile is respectable in size. However, I now realize that while the tile may indeed be 4 km^2 in area according to whatever standards of measuring they use, the implications of this are highly misleading. This is because the scale of plopables in SC2013 are FAR bigger than those in SC4. Really, the amount of space you have to play with is closer to the 1 km by 1 km or 'small' tile from SC4.

Anyhow, it sounds like they at least "want" to make the game moddable;

The new SimCity, due for 2013 on PC and Mac, is powered by a new proprietary engine called GlassBox. It is described as "a new data-driven simulation engine" that is Maxis' "bet for the future." At a panel during Game Developers Conference, the studio detailed how GlassBox will power the upcoming SimCity "reboot" and promised that the modding community will be able to get their hands on their powerful new tools.

"We're huge fans of our modding community," creative director Ocean Quigley told the audience. "We've designed all this stuff to be moddable."


"We know modding is hugely important to our community," Quigley noted. "We know the reason why people are still playing SimCity 4 ten years later is because the modding community has kept it alive. GlassBox is built to be moddable, but beyond that we haven't announced anything"

While coming short of announcing full mod support for SimCity, Maxis did add that "we're using the same package format The Sims and SimCity 4 used," showing Maxis' desire to make it easy for Sim fans to transition to GlassBox tools.

I do hope that they open the game up for modding -- but is it really reasonable to expect this?

They've been pushing bonus content, and I expect them to start selling DLC sooner or later -- so, how could they possibly make it moddable?

DLC would be pointless if the game supported modding, and how would the online requirement work? Would the servers let you log on with modified game files?

We need to figure out who is going to start the region. I would, but im in the UK and only getting the game on the 8th. Is anyone willing to do it who gets it earlier?

Awesome, that works.

For my neighbors in my city, I won't have much time the next couple of weeks to work on my city since I'm about to graduate from college, but I'll be on it non stop by the end of the month. You guys tell me what type of city to make and what to specialize in and I'll work on it, I don't really have a preference. I'll add you guys on Origin.

Yes you can "visit". (load the simulation and view, but anything that happens while you are viewing wont affect them).

From the livestream, I think they sit in the furthest end of the chain (e.g. coal mine, or trade depot) and used locally.
