I'm not sure, but I don't think you'll be able to boost the local economy by not trading. Local takes what it needs and the rest gets traded out.

Nope! You can build however you like. You can also mix specializations (educational/tourist city, casino/oil city, etc.). You can also switch your strategy at any time. It really depends on how you want to play.
I'm assuming with certain areas having oil, coal, ect that it's better to go with what your lot has, right? Would doing weird mixtures like Electronic/oil be worse?

Yeah, certain cities are designed to take advantage of the resources. But, of course, you don't have to take advantage of them if you don't want to. Sometimes you may want to utilize the resources, make some dough quick, and then change your strategy. Part of the fun is deciding how you want to utilize the space (and resources) at your disposal.

Whoever creates the region will send you an invite yes. No one will force you to play right away though, just know you'll be taking someone elses spot.

Like I said, I'm more then fine in creating the region, sending invites, etc. I just don't know if I'll be able to unlock the game with a proxy or not since I'm in Europe (day 7 release)
Yeah I'd rather not do that as I'm not certain how much time I'll be getting in.

As long as you do play, even if not much, i don't think that will be a problem. We don't expect everyone to be extremly dedicated to their cities.

What should we do if players decide to drop out before launch, or just non-responsive to PM's?
You can always add more people to the region post-launch, e.g. if new people come in here, someone from another region wants a second city, or even someone from the same...

I had two Zombie outbreaks in 3.5h of beta play last week, each decimating my city to less than 1/4th of the initial population, so... I wouldn't doubt it.
