Not really. EDGE has never been strong on reviews. Its their focus on game development that separates them from the other publication. I would say 1up, Gamespot and IGN are better at reviews as its their main job.

You are clearly in a minority, here.

Gamesport and Ign are worse than any Euro gaming press media....so yeah you're wrong, US gaming press is completely focused on marine/shooter/fps etc games....they're mostly incapable of reviewing games outside of these parameters....but that's my opinion.

Nice one.

I wasn't bitching, I just feel that even if SS is as good as the EDGE score makes me believe and it's gameplay is superior to every otehr game, i just can't see it getting the nod over batman who is grim, HD and cool
But the other way around also applies. The big gaming franchise with a huge history is Zelda here, which also gets the benefit of nostalgia and coming from one of gaming most influential and loved publishers. So don't lay out the picture as if Skyward Sword is the underdog here, because the notion is just too outrageous.

Aren't magazine covers negotiated months in advance? It's not like edge was like "this game is better then uncharted 3 let's put it on the cover"

I'm cautiously hyped, the 10 is making it hard not to get really hyped, but they did give TP ( a game that personally I'd say is a 7) a 9, granted it was likely a different reviewer. Regardless looking forward to playing this

Less than four weeks in euro land :D

Let's be honest here, having #1, #2 and #3 in Gamerankins means nothing :p

Nintendo...how they do it...
Emphasis on controls and level design in an era where many big-budget games seem to be designed around flash and cinematic? Its amazing what money and time can do when you focus it on the really small details like the height of Mario's jump.

I'm very optimistic for this game, and the reviews coming out are very exciting.

That said, I personally don't agree with either Super Mario Galaxy or Galaxy 2 being 10/10 games. They were 10/10 ideas, but execution lacked. Galaxy 2 definitely came close, but still had some flaws.

I hope I agree on Skyward though!

A 10 from EDGE?? I can't wait to play this game. I am going to make sure that I don't work the day that it comes out!

To me, Nintendo is the Pixar of the video game industry, or Disney in their prime. Sometimes they make a few missteps, but they strike gold most of the time.

I totally agree. Eurogamer is probably the most well-balanced site around when it comes to reviews. The major US sites are fat too obsessed with dudebro.

I was just replying to the person who thought there might be an upset if SS, a Wii game, is the best reviewed game of the generation.

I wouldn't say it means nothing, though. It's pretty cool.

gamerankings > metacritic

Yeah, they have a much better setup, less bloated, easier to search.

Now we need a 10/10 from Eurogamer and the job is done.

No we need a Jeff Gerstmann 5/5 stars for this to be finished.

Edit: Giantbomb should completely change their review parameters for this game and give it a 8.7 just to fuck with people.

Holy shit, Edge is usually hard to please 10/10...wow.

I sold my Wii though, and don't really want to buy one for one game...

Even if it is the best Zelda game ever?? I guess maybe you can wait until the Wii U comes out and play the game on it.

Going by this logic though we should ignore most major gaming publications because the majority of them did give it a 9. Except for the famous 8.8 by Gamespot.

This is true...also I find Nintendo will delay a game if it isn't ready...where as other developers and publishers will just ship and promise a sequel to address any issues and compromises that have been made.

Their record speaks for itself...I struggle to think of a terrible Nintendo games...

The fact that Gamerankings doesn't allow user reviews also helps.
This game sux cuz Wii is for baby games and this is a baby game. Also Zelda has a green hat and my favorite color is blue so 1/10 DarkWarriorPlayer199

Eh, 9 for TP? I don't think so. Zelda at it's most derivative and innovation bankrupt state. I know edge tends to have hard-ons for particular series and Zelda seems to be one of them. Not that I'm saying SS isn't a top game...

I don't like Metacritic's weighted average personally. It seems weighted an awful lot towards IGN, Gamespot and 1up
I just looked at Metacritic's top games of all time.

Some game called Out Of The Park Baseball 2007 is the 9th highest rated game of all time, based on 5 (mostly unknown) critic reviews.

Yeah.

Gamerankings is >>>>>>>>>> Metacritics.

Just look at what Metacritics has as the highest reviewed game of all time!! GTAIV! Now look at the user scores.....7.5 and 7.9. Compare those score to SMG 1 + 2 scores..

Gamerankings has Ocarina of Time as the best reviewed game of all time, which makes sense, as opposed to an overrated game.

Except that you're going off of a score from EDGE, who don't know shit about shit.

The Witcher = 5
The Witcher 2 = 6
GTA IV = 10
God of War II = 7 (after giving GoW an 8)
Sid Meier's Pirates! = 6 (PC version)
Dark Cloud 2 = 6
Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II = 7
Little Big Planet = 6
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner = 4
Jet Grind Radio = 4

I could go on, but I'm pretty sure EDGE has at least what I consider the wrong idea for a review publication. Instead of viewing it from a "will people who like this genre/franchise/etc. like this game?" standpoint its entirely "I like it/I don't like it".

Add the fact that their "I like it/I don't like it" has a sliding scale that apparently gives bonus points to UK based developers and Nintendo titles, while taking them away from Sony titles (EDGE is nearly without fail more negative on every Sony game or Sony console exclusive than industry average).

They aren't a harsh reviewing publication, they're a shitty reviewing publication that tries to act like they hold games to a higher standard and use the full range of scoring when in reality they'll throw a perfect score on anything that strikes their fancy faster than anyone around. The only reason their reviews show any real range is that they love throwing a 5-7 on any really good game that doesn't personally click with them.

Why the rant? Because I'm sick of seeing public sentiment go "LOLZ, EDGE!" when a game they like gets a low score (like Dead Island getting a 3/10) but then acting like EDGE is somehow a stalwart of integrity when they give a 9 or 10 to a game they're excited for.

They're a bunch of twits with quite possibly the most obtuse perspective on game reviews you'll ever find. They should generally just be dismissed and ignored. That simple.
