Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

Might be the wrong place to ask... but do US stores carry edge? Really like the cover and would def. pick up the issue.

It's upsetting to see EDGE's traditionally awesome cover art now covered in a vomit of text like every other magazine ;_;

Fairly certain Barnes & Noble have it.

I could go on, but I'm pretty sure EDGE has at least what I consider the wrong idea for a review publication. Instead of viewing it from a "will people who like this genre/franchise/etc. like this game?" standpoint its entirely "I like it/I don't like it".

Where is it...

while taking them away from Sony titles (EDGE is nearly without fail more negative on every Sony game or Sony console exclusive than industry average).

There it is!

No we need a Jeff Gerstmann 5/5 stars for this to be finished.

Edit: Giantbomb should completely change their review parameters for this game and give it a 8.7 just to fuck with people.

I'd probably have more fun writing extensively about how much *better* than Twilight Princess it is, then give it 8.9.

I just looked at Metacritic's top games of all time.

Some game called Out Of The Park Baseball 2007 is the 9th highest rated game of all time, based on 5 (mostly unknown) critic reviews.

Yeah.

You can find that game in gamerankings as well if you narrow the search to 5 reviews.

Not as high though.

UncleSporky said:
I wouldn't say it means nothing, though. It's pretty cool.
And this is all Gamerankings and Metacritic is... "It's pretty cool", that is.

The fact that 360/PS3 and PS2 dominates the list outside if that is also pretty cool :p

Except that you're going off of a score from EDGE, who don't know shit about shit.

The Witcher = 5
The Witcher 2 = 6
GTA IV = 10
God of War II = 7 (after giving GoW an 8)
Sid Meier's Pirates! = 6 (PC version)
Dark Cloud 2 = 6
Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II = 7
Little Big Planet = 6
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner = 4
Jet Grind Radio = 4

They aren't a harsh reviewing publication, they're a shitty reviewing publication that tries to act like they hold games to a higher standard and use the full range of scoring when in reality they'll throw a perfect score on anything that strikes their fancy faster than anyone around. The only reason their reviews show any real range is that they love throwing a 5-7 on any really good game that doesn't personally click with them.

Why the rant? Because I'm sick of seeing public sentiment go "LOLZ, EDGE!" when a game they like gets a low score (like Dead Island getting a 3/10) but then acting like EDGE is somehow a stalwart of integrity when they give a 9 or 10 to a game they're excited for.

They're a bunch of twits with quite possibly the most obtuse perspective on game reviews you'll ever find. They should generally just be dismissed and ignored. That simple.

They gave LittleBigPlanet a 10 not a 6

Yeah.

I seem to remember hearing a site somewhere wax lyrical about how wonderful the OOTP series was, even though it was obscure (the back of my mind's suggesting that maybe it was Home of the Underdogs?). That's always going to be a risk of extremely niche titles, because they might actually *be* that good, but it's hard to tell given that the only reviews they're likely to get would be from people predisposed to liking them.

awww shit...I think I might have to buy a Wii just for this game. I was able to resist the lure of Metroid and Mario, but a new Zelda--and one they clearly spent a lot of time on--may prove to be too much.

Review score obsession and the potential, passive-aggressive behavior between people in this thread and the Uncharted 3 one can be pretty entertaining. :p

We have an official Uncharted 3 review thread and I'd imagine we'll get another thread for this issue when the other scores are revealed. Let's save the campaign to discredit EDGE for those places.

Nice I suppose though, I had a bad feeling it was going to be one of the shorter B-grade Zeldas like the Wind Waker with an over world that's way too empty than it should be, not having enough dungeons which happen to be simplistic like PH, as well as a joke of a difficulty.

Then again Edge criticized Doom because you couldn't talk to the monsters.

lf only you could talk to these creatures, then perhaps you could try and make friends with them, form alliances... Now, that would be interesting. [7]
Yes they really said that, on top of the GTA III 'Typo' of [6]. Well as a collective entity, who knows who actually wrote it? But if their opinion means something... I still don't think it will be at the same level as Majora's Mask or the Wii game of the year (Xenoblade) but love to be proven wrong on both accounts, and the series isn't past its prime.

Also doesn't this confirm that Super Mario 3DS will be less than a [10]? There's no way they're going to award two 10s too Nintendo games in one issue even though they're much frequent in the last couple of years. Super Mario Sunshine was the only 3D Mario game not to have its 10. It got [9] That was a great yet disappointing adventure because it fell below the usual gold standard set by the rest of the series, and there was me hoping for a Super Mario of the utmost superlative quality. It looks like we may be getting a disappointment on our hands in the same issue of a classic Zelda.

Was that guy joking or he serious? Nice if true.

Is it out today? Will have to buy in iPhone otherwise. Also can't believe I've never seen an issue ever!! Will ask Mum to see if she spots one on the way home from work tomorrow

Yeah.

And rightfully so. OOTP is amazing.

This obsession with review scores is so weird. Most people here probably don't even look upon video game journalism in high regard yet there's some kind of obsession from the same outlets over whether a game gets a 9 or a 10.

Nintendo...how they do it...

They've been making games for over 25 years now. In that time they must have amassed a tremendous amount of wisdom in regards to game design. Plus, they place a very strong emphasis on quality over quantity.

Ah yes, Nintendo bias.

Random sampling of games developed by Nintendo, wholly owned subsidiaries, and external partners, from the west and the east, across genres, across the full score range, and across platformers. I'm sure there are scores both above and below the Metacritic that I've excluded, I literally just sorted by scores upwards and picked random stuff from platforms that Metacritic covers:

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Time - 3 (MC 60) BELOW
Wario - Master of Disguise - 4 (MC 60) BELOW
Trace Memory R - 4 (MC 66) BELOW
Yoshi's Topsy-Turvy - 4 (MC 60) BELOW
Battalion Wars 2 - 5 (MC 75, bonus this is also a UK developer OMG BIAS) BELOW
DK King of Swing - 5 (MC 70) BELOW
Mario Kart Double Dash - 5 (MC 87--yes, they scored 37 points below the Metacritic average here) BELOW
Mario Strikers Charged - 6 (MC 79) BELOW
Excite Truck - 6 (MC 72) BELOW
Wario Land: Shake It - 6 (MC 78) BELOW
Hotel Dusk - 6 (MC 78) BELOW
Wii Sports Resort - 6 (MC 80) BELOW
Golden Sun - 7 (MC 91) BELOW
Tetris DS - 7 (MC 84) BELOW
New Super Mario Bros Wii - 7 (MC 87) BELOW
Drill Dozer - 7 (MC 81) BELOW
Professor Layton 1 - 7 (MC 85) BELOW
Paper Mario - 7 (MC 93) BELOW
DK Jungle Beat - 8 (MC 80) Exactly on Metacritic
Animal Crossing City Folk - 7 (MC 73) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
Punch-Out! - 8 (MC 86) BELOW, but just one score bracket
Minish Cap - 8 (MC 89) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
Twilight Princess - 9 (MC 95) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
Brawl - 9 (MC 93) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
M&L3 - Bowser's Inside Story - 9 (MC 90) Exactly on Metacritic
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 10 (MC 97) FOUND IT! BIAS! HIGHER SCORE THAN METACRITIC! EDGE ALERT! ALERT! NINTENDO BIAS DETECTED! JOURNALISTIC SCANDAL! MONEYHATS! VENGEANCE AT LAST!!!!!

Edited with a second pass to fill out a few franchises that weren't represented in my original list.

okay their doom review is great: http://www.next-gen.biz/reviews/doom-review

They gave this and that x and y WHAAAAAA I'm a little baby that can't read and find out if the reviews I bitch about are good or not WHAAAAA!1

And so on.

Every publification has text that you don't agree on. But it doesn't mean that all the journalism and reviews created after it can't be something else. (unless we are talking about clear and proven joke sites like IGN).

One nice feature Edge themselves did a while back was an issue-wide feature on reviews and the effects they can have (the centrepiece being that there were no review scores on any of the reviews in that issue; all the review scores were bundled into a sidebox at the end of the issue.) Ultimately, their point was that reviews should not be boiled down to a score, and that people should read the *text* to form an opinion. The scores only quantify one person's opinion of the game; the text indicates *how* they came to that opinion and so a reader can see if they agree with the logic or not.

Jet Set Radio (& Future) got 8/10, dunno where he is pulling some of his numbers from.

They gave the GBA version a 4. They gave the DC version an 8. He searched some database for "Jet Grind Radio" not knowing that the DC version is called "Jet Set Radio" everywhere else in the world except North America.

The LittleBigPlanet score is also their score for the PSP version, not the PS3 version, which they gave a 10.

And I'm guessing his God of War "3" getting a 7 was that they gave a 7 to Chains of Olympus. They gave an 8 to God of War 3.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.
