Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

Huh, the Edge review was allready quoted in that trailer?

ONM and Edge are both made by Future Publishing, and this trailer is for the Golden Joystick Awards in London tonight - which is a GamesMaster magazine event, a mag and event also made / organised by Future.

So basically, yeah, they quoted their own review in the trailer.

From the Destructoid preview:

One thing I haven't really had a chance to get into in my last couple of previews of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is how much more immersive the entire world actually is compared to past Zelda games. In some ways, it's almost like playing a "Bethesda-lite" version of Zelda.

IGN WAS RIGHT! :O

I think this will turn into some kind of historical event as far as EDGE reviews are concerned.

EDGE giving a 10 for a game in what is by all accounts outdated hardware.

wow, mind blown.

Only 10/10 from Edge? Guess you can blame their UK bias as usual. If this was a British game I wouldn't be surprised if they scored it 11/10.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 also have a 10 too. They just like good games :3

Third 10 EDGE gives to a Wii game though.

Nice to hear it is already getting such high accolades. Can't wait to play this on Dolphin! I'm hoping it runs without a hitch day 1.

Well, I don't really give Edge's reviews much merit (wildly inconsistent), but I suppose a 10 from them is an achievement. So long as you ignore the one they gave Halo 3.

Anyway, I'm pumped. I do have this feeling that it could be one of the, if not the best Zelda yet!

By all means, SMG 1 & 2 are the best games of this gen. Here's hoping they are dethroned by Zelda SS.

TP would have been 8/1o+ material had it just been straight up dungeons and none of that wolf/twilight zone nonsense. Seriously ruined the game for me (besides the empty world that was far too large, and the crappy fishing ;_;).
lol wut?
Fish was great and far better than all of tww's mini games. TWW also had a large empty world.

This game is gonna be amazing, too bad I won't have a way of playing it, ever. Enjoyed the fuck out of Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time, but Twilight Princess, not so much. What game in the series does it resemble the most?

Except that you're going off of a score from EDGE, who don't know shit about shit.

The Witcher = 5
The Witcher 2 = 6
GTA IV = 10
God of War II = 7 (after giving GoW an 8)
Sid Meier's Pirates! = 6 (PC version)
Dark Cloud 2 = 6
Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II = 7
Little Big Planet = 6
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner = 4
Jet Grind Radio = 4

I could go on, but I'm pretty sure EDGE has at least what I consider the wrong idea for a review publication. Instead of viewing it from a "will people who like this genre/franchise/etc. like this game?" standpoint its entirely "I like it/I don't like it".

Add the fact that their "I like it/I don't like it" has a sliding scale that apparently gives bonus points to UK based developers and Nintendo titles, while taking them away from Sony titles (EDGE is nearly without fail more negative on every Sony game or Sony console exclusive than industry average).

They aren't a harsh reviewing publication, they're a shitty reviewing publication that tries to act like they hold games to a higher standard and use the full range of scoring when in reality they'll throw a perfect score on anything that strikes their fancy faster than anyone around. The only reason their reviews show any real range is that they love throwing a 5-7 on any really good game that doesn't personally click with them.

Why the rant? Because I'm sick of seeing public sentiment go "LOLZ, EDGE!" when a game they like gets a low score (like Dead Island getting a 3/10) but then acting like EDGE is somehow a stalwart of integrity when they give a 9 or 10 to a game they're excited for.

They're a bunch of twits with quite possibly the most obtuse perspective on game reviews you'll ever find. They should generally just be dismissed and ignored. That simple.
I'm pretty sure LittleBigPlanet got a 10 from Edge.

well, I stand corrected.

Still, giving a 10 to a Wii game in holidays 2011, 5 freaking years after the Wii and its already-on-launch outdated hardware was released is mindblowing.

Awesome, can't wait.

They gave the GBA version a 4. They gave the DC version an 8. He searched some database for "Jet Grind Radio" not knowing that the DC version is called "Jet Set Radio" everywhere else in the world except North America.

The LittleBigPlanet score is also their score for the PSP version, not the PS3 version, which they gave a 10.

And I'm guessing his God of War "3" getting a 7 was that they gave a 7 to Chains of Olympus. They gave an 8 to God of War 3.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

Deeeeeestroyed. Oh...my...god... Wow.

Damn right, both are in every way deserving of a 10. Absolutely excited beyond belief for SS now - haters/doubters be damned.

I can't wait for the latest issue to arrive in the mail, but given the inconsistency of their international delivery I'll probably be finished the game by then.

Going to start taking notes in this thread. People who down-play incredible works like Mario Galaxy just because they are "inferior" tech are making it to the list for future review.

A flagship Nintendo franchise getting a "10" isn't mindblowing at all.

I know some fans weren't thrilled that they were evolving the stale Zelda formula, but I was happy to see it, and it looks like it's paid off.

It seems rare for Edge to hand out 10 scores. As far as Wii games go, it looks like only the two Mario Galaxy games received that honor.

Super Mario Galaxy - 10
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 10
Twilight Princess - 9
No More Heroes - 9
Xenoblade Chronicles - 9
Smash Bros Brawl - 9
No More Heroes - 9
Sin & Punishment 2 - 8
Punch-Out!! - 8
Kirby's Epic Yarn - 8
GoldenEye 007 - 8
No More Heroes 2 - 7
Monster Hunter Tri - 7
Red Steel 2 - 7
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom - 7
Metroid Prime 3 - 7
Donkey Kong Country Returns - 7
Wii Sports Resort - 7
Animal Crossing: City Folk -7
Geometry Wars Galaxies - 7
Red Steel 2 - 7
Epic Mickey - 7
Mario Kart Wii - 6
Muramasa: The Demon Blade - 6
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories - 6
MadWorld - 6
Sonic Colors - 6
Red Steel - 5
The Conduit - 4
The Conduit 2 - 4
Soul Calibur Legends - 2

That quote makes no sense. SS is the only Zelda title of 2011.

Like Nintendo, you've forgotten about Link's Awakening. Also Four Swords was released just a while back.

But you already mentioned that. Also my comment was a dig at the fact that there is no music from Link's Awakening for the Zelda concert. OoT, on the other hand, is well represented.

Awesome, can't wait.

I'm pretty sure Edge would be offended by the idea that they'd mark down a game because of the hardware it's on.

I really don't understand your logic here. So are you really saying later into the hardwares lifecycle you're surprised that such a good game could be achieved? I would think it would be just the opposite, and more highly rated games would come later in any consoles life as the developers get more used to the hardware.

Sure, the Wii was pretty much outdated spec-wise from the start, but that doesn't mean it can't have games that a reviewer thinks are head and shoulders above the rest. And as Dar as graphics, it should only be judged on what the console can do, not what's possible on other systems.

Wow, Stump, when did Mario return the rod to you?

Oh, and yeah, starting to get pretty hyped. Didn't expect that kind of score from Edge, of all magazines.

And everyone: stop giving a damn about whatever Jeff Gerstmann will say about this game. He lost interest long ago in almost anything that isn't an American-developed console shooter or a driving simulator. If he reviews it, he'll give it two or three stars, say that it's "the same game as all the other Zeldas" and complain that it doesn't have voice acting, and then he'll go back to chainsawing a slightly different-looking brown alien in the third Gears of War game released since Twilight Princess came out.

And yet, I still have hope that I'm wrong, for some reason.

Ah yes, Nintendo bias.

Random sampling of games developed by Nintendo, wholly owned subsidiaries, and external partners, from the west and the east, across genres, across the full score range, and across platformers. I'm sure there are scores both above and below the Metacritic that I've excluded, I literally just sorted by scores upwards and picked random stuff from platforms that Metacritic covers:

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Time - 3 (MC 60) BELOW
Wario - Master of Disguise - 4 (MC 60) BELOW
Trace Memory R - 4 (MC 66) BELOW
Yoshi's Topsy-Turvy - 4 (MC 60) BELOW
Battalion Wars 2 - 5 (MC 75, bonus this is also a UK developer OMG BIAS) BELOW
DK King of Swing - 5 (MC 70) BELOW
Mario Kart Double Dash - 5 (MC 87--yes, they scored 37 points below the Metacritic average here) BELOW
Mario Strikers Charged - 6 (MC 79) BELOW
Excite Truck - 6 (MC 72) BELOW
Wario Land: Shake It - 6 (MC 78) BELOW
Hotel Dusk - 6 (MC 78) BELOW
Wii Sports Resort - 6 (MC 80) BELOW
Golden Sun - 7 (MC 91) BELOW
Tetris DS - 7 (MC 84) BELOW
New Super Mario Bros Wii - 7 (MC 87) BELOW
Drill Dozer - 7 (MC 81) BELOW
Professor Layton 1 - 7 (MC 85) BELOW
Paper Mario - 7 (MC 93) BELOW
DK Jungle Beat - 8 (MC 80) Exactly on Metacritic
Animal Crossing City Folk - 7 (MC 73) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
Punch-Out! - 8 (MC 86) BELOW, but just one score bracket
Minish Cap - 8 (MC 89) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
Twilight Princess - 9 (MC 95) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
Brawl - 9 (MC 93) BELOW, but just one score bracket.
M&L3 - Bowser's Inside Story - 9 (MC 90) Exactly on Metacritic
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 10 (MC 97) FOUND IT! BIAS! HIGHER SCORE THAN METACRITIC! EDGE ALERT! ALERT! NINTENDO BIAS DETECTED! JOURNALISTIC SCANDAL! MONEYHATS! VENGEANCE AT LAST!!!!!

Edited with a second pass to fill out a few franchises that weren't represented in my original list.

And... scene.
