The excessive focus on the 8-10 scale doesn't tell me so much that there has been enormous score inflation (obviously, there has been), but that the vast majority of reviewers are content with the status of video games as they are now. A game can have an atrocious story, bland art design, and repetitive design, but as long as it has the spectacular setpieces and addictively fun gameplay, it's a 10.
At least in the film industry critics have the audacity to sometimes shit all over the AAA, mainstream fare, hence why someone like AO Scott could brashly criticize The Dark Knight or Stephanie Zacharek could skewer Avatar. Outside some fringe figures like Yahtzee, you never see this in games, precisely because the reviewers are cretins groping for another helping of schlock.
