This was a pretty good post, but you went a little "enter button" happy. Paragraphs can be seven sentences long, or even more! I'm guilty of pressing enter too much sometimes as well, but it matters with big posts.

EDIT: Better!

The thing about Zelda games is that with a series of this quality, you expect to see 9's and 10's. This isn't exactly unexpected. It is the standard Nintendo has set for this franchise. Anything less would be disappointing.

I really don't get how Nintendo gets blasted for "being forumalic" or not changing their games up enough when we get 1 or 2 mainline releases in Mario and Zelda a generation max and they always change some pretty big stuff. Yet games like Gears, Halo, Uncharted, and COD come out 3 times a generation or more and are almost exactly the same each time. Its such an odd complaint to me.
Had tons of discussions with friends/acquaintances about that certain gripe. Some of them just really don't like Nintendo and always use that argument. (they always tell me to grow up and play some CoD/Battlefield whatever hehe) Several others use entirely different arguments. Some say they've just outgrown Nintendo and others will tell me that they have seen those series far too many times over the past years. It's always different though.

Do not start this...It's that mentality that is a poison. Set no expectations, just go in clean slate. This game stands to the same standards as all others!

Yeah, oddly its the last one that usually bothers me the most.

Because, it is somehow a problem to exist for 25 years, but you can shove 15 games into 2 months and its fine because its a newer franchise. >.<

Yeah I just don't get it. I love Nintendo games and I love Gears and Halo. But the whole "rehash" argument is complete crap when its applied so subjectively.

Set no expectations? This is a fucking Zelda game 5 years in the making. Of course standards will be set! This is the testing ground for future motion control use in a hardcore focused game. It takes Zelda in new experimental directions and a new art style. There are tons of expectations surrounding this game. That's just how it has panned out. People expect the very best out of Zelda games. Nintendo throws everything it's got into this franchise.

Have you not been watching all the trailers for this game? There's no way this WON'T be better than Ocarina of Time. The visuals, cinematics, music, gameplay, and characters all seem to be much more interesting than OoT.

Better than Majora's Mask? We'll just have to wait and see. This game doesn't seem to have that dark vibe that made Majora's Mask so good, but it seems to be completely packed with content.

Haven't watched a single frame of video and have seen like two screenshots. I'm so proud of myself.

You are very strong. You will also be very very happy with what you will see (and I haven't even seen all that Nintendo has spoiled yet)

This game might be better in terms of content and design, but it wasn't a paradigm shift like Zelda OOt. Zelda OOt at release changed gaming. It created spinoffs. Its lockon mechanic is used to this very day in some very high profile games. It's music still resonates with fans after many years. It is still talked about frequently. Zelda OOt was a phenomenon that I don't think will ever be repeated unless a technology comes along that is so far advanced as to render everything in gaming up till this point irrelevant.

I always spin the discussion into a direction in which I point out that the games they play had/have a lot of installements as well. How is that not the "same" as titles from Nintendo? They shrug and tell me "but it doesn't feel that way". It's really hard to take these kind of prejudices away.

I bailed out after E3 2011. Same for Uncharted and Batman. Good on me, for a change.
I didnt spoil anything with Uncharted 3. I went into that game knowing there was a desert level and that the main characters all return. Im on chapter 7 and pretty much everything is a complete surprise.

I love that Nintendo doesn't just rehash franchises. They experiment with differeny genres, art styles, character designs, and gameplay mechanics for each title. It really is humorous that people accuse nintendo of rehashing the same ideas when sequels of mainstay Nintendo franchises change so much from game to game. I can't actually think of another devleoper that changes so much from one game to another as Nintendo does. That's why the whole "same game since N64" shit always confuses me. Sure they keep the elements that work in a franchise consistent. that means they know why those games are popular, but they arent afraid to turn everything else on its head in search of new directions to take them. It takes a lot of balls to mess with a franchise this beloved and completely change the art from game to game. It takes a lot of nerve to stick with motion controls and prove that it works once and for all. Nintendo has giant steel balls, and thats why I like them as a developer.

Alas, I knew about the Chateau going in. And the deserts, obviously. The E3 level too. :/

Sure I do. I love sequels. Look, that's not the point. I just wonder why magazines always like to blaim like every series possible to be repetetive - only not the ones from Nintendo. That's all. I'm not laughing about anyone who loves this games. Everyone has his own taste.

First of all Nintendo has had its fair shares of "repetitive" complaints. Acting like most Nintendo series have never been accused of being repetitive means you just haven't been paying attention well enough.

But I agree somewhat; other big franchises seem to be docked more for repetitiveness than most big Nintendo franchises. Why is that? Well maybe it's because Nintendo doesn't have an average output of three-four titles per generation for its franchises. Lets take a look at the recent output in mainline console games for the major series of the past two generations:

Uncharted 1, 2, 3 (3.0 APG)
Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, (2.5 APG)
Gears of War 1, 2, 3 (3.0 APG)
Final Fantasy X, X-2, XII, XIII (2.0 APG)
Upcoming: Final Fantasy XIII-2, XII Versus
Ratchet and Clank 1, GC, UYA, D, SM, ToD, QfB, aCiT, A4O (4.5 APG)
Call of Duty 2, 3, MW, WW, MW2, BO, MW3 (4.0 APG)
GTA 3, VC, SA, GTA 4 (2.5 APG)
Upcoming: GTA 5
Elder Scrolls Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim (1.5 APG)
Half-Life 1, 2 (1.0 APG)
Assassins Creed 1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations (APG 4.0)

Nintendo:

Legend Of Zelda WW, Four Swords, TP, SS (2.0 APG)
Mario Sunshine, Galaxy, NSMB Wii, Galaxy 2 (2.0 APG)
Metroid Prime 1, 2, 3, Other M (2.0 APG)
Donkey Kong JB, Returns (1 APG)
Kirby EY, RTD (1 APG)
Mario Kart Wii, Double Dash (1 APG)
Wii Sports, Resort (2.0 APG)
Mario Party 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (3.0 APG)
Pikimin 1, 2 (1.0 APG)
Star fox Assault, Adventures (1.0 APG)

As you can see Nintendo rarely releases over 2 games per generation per series. And even then you have titles that are completely different than their predecessors (Four Swords, NSMB Wii*, Jungle Beat, Adventures, and Other M*). The only two series that really deserved the complaints of repetitiveness was/is The Metroid Prime and Mario Party series. They each had a six year span to where (at least) one game was release every two years.

Besides, if you really think Sunshine and Galaxy are totally the same then you obviously haven't played them. One relies on a water jet-pack to move around in a flat world while the other requires you use the force of gravity to travel between small planets. And while you might have a case with WW and TP** (I guess), Skyward Sword is a whole new take on the Zelda Formula while also playing completely differently because it requires full use of motion controls. I mean seriously, saying Mario and Zelda have been repetitive this generation is like saying Nuts and Bolts is ACTUALLY a Banjo & Kazooie game.

* 2D Mario is pretty much a different game/play-style compared to 3D Mario. The same can be said for Metroid.
** Twilight Princess was punished by plenty of reviewers/fans for basically being a rehash of Ocarina of Time.

oh well, i was referring to the overall critics score. ocarina of time came out in a much different time.

as a game, ocarina of time did age well, but it the only thing it still holds over other more recent games is its pacing. dungeon design is pretty basic compared to stuff we saw in the wind waker and twilight princess, and the interaction with the world is nothing like what it is in majora's mask.

this is coming from a guy who fucking loved oot. it's time to stop pretending it's 1998 and move on.

Ocarina was amazing because not only was it polished as fuck and had amazing gameplay, it was pushing high-end graphics and the hardware of the times.

This is a Wii game. Perception wont allow this to be better than OOT.

This is very true. But I think another thing to note is, at least for WW and TP, there are aspects that make you say "Man, this sucks", and it drags the quality of the game down. OOT has no such moments.

Although subsequent Zelda titles have had higher highs, they've also had lower lows. OOT is still a fantastic game, the general consensus on OOT 3DS pretty much proves it.

I never thought the most exciting thing I'm looking forward to is the orchestrated music! SMG blew me away with the orchestrated music. Can't wait to hear how Skyward Sword will sound on my surround sound!

Hi!

I'm gonna try to reply to your post to the best of my ability, though I do have the tendacy to lose track of my mind, apologies for that in advance.

I like what i read and while i agree with most, the word KIRBY keep appearing in my head

After swuch a huge graphical change that was Epic Yarn/Return to Dreamland, thre was articles (ign and other sutff, but still...) that claimed that the seires needed to "take more risks"

....wich reminds me the fact that Canvas Course was one of the most criticaly aclaimed kirby games in long time, and it has a drastic gameplay change

which is why i mentioned the game's pacing as the sole strong point that still holds up.

oot3d's reviews felt more like a coronation than some sort of earned thing. 'oh, oot? yes, best game ever, 10/10'

strangely, people were more critical when the game came out on the gamecube, and that's when it was free and had entirely different level design in addition to the original game.

well you're in luck.

1. The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Medley
2. Kakariko Village Twilight Princess Theme
3. The Wind Waker Symphonic Movement
4. Gerudo Valley
5. Great Fairy’s Fountain theme
6. Twilight Princess Symphonic Movement
7. The Legend of Zelda Main Theme Medley
8. Ballad of the Goddess from Skyward Sword

I laugh at this simply because NOA originally asked the track names not be given out at all. It's funny because the soundtrack has nothing remotely even considered a spoiler, and aside from one track we've heard over and over, it's mostly not even related to Skyward Sword. The only reason they could have to ask for that list to be a secret is to entice fans to buy the game early enough to get the CD to know what is on it. Then almost every single major site posts a video of the unboxing with the track list inside.

Agreed. OoT had the perfect balance in pacing in all categories but everything has been exceeded in it. I'd also say MM, WW and TP all had some balancing issues where they offered something great but sucked in another category.

sorry for the offtopicness but TSA, are you still doing Zelda speedruns?

do you have one for TP? how fast can you finish TP without any detour?

Saw the game today at a Finnish game expo, it looked very good, framerate was very stable and looked 60hz(is it?)and the outlook was really crisp. Standing few meters away the monitor i could have swore the game was running in hd resolution. I actually had to do a double take to make sure i wasn't seeing hd footage. ;) few more days!

No, I haven't tried serious speedruns in years. I never did one for Twilight Princess, and I'm not sure how long it took me to play through it when I was doing the video guides back then. You can probably tally the times of my Wii/GCN visual guides to get an idea, or look at the play time on the last file.

Both versions come with the music CD. It's probably as limited edition as the OoT disc was with Wind Waker. As long as you get it within the first couple of months you should be fine.

Sheesh, these reviews are getting me very interested, but Twilight Princess was also well-reviewed and I stopped playing that game after 20 hours as I found it quite tedious and surprisingly soulless.

Aw come on, I've seen them give tens a million times. they gave tens when aonuma makes the wind waker, they gave tens when kojima made metal gear solid 2, they gave tens when they did long division and had a remainder left over.

i honestly want jeff gerstmann to review this for giantbomb, athough i'd understand completely if he didn't. i trust him to give an honest review of the game something i don't trust many others with

other than that i'm waiting on the eurogamer review and possibly gamespot
