Is Jim Sterling reviewing it?
No. He implied that he didn't like the motion controls on the last episode of Podtoid so he gave it to Johnathan Holmes to review.

That's at least good. If it's clear he isn't going to like something or hasn't liked something in the past best to hand off the review to someone else.

Argh, I don't know if I should get this or not, but I need to decide now because I'd get the bundle. I got bored with Ocarina of Time on the 3DS and had problems with Twilight Princess on the Wii because I'm really left-handed (that and the pacing in the beginning and throughout is really off-putting). I actually finished Wind Waker but that game has major issues of its own (constant wind fiddling, endgame Triforce quest, other nitpicks).

The only Zelda game I've really liked so far out of what I've played to varying degrees of completion (I, II, ALttP, LA, OoT, Seasons, WW, MC, TP, PH, 4S) is Link's Awakening. And maybe OoT, too, if I ever get around to finishing it.

This one looks like it fixes quite a few gripes I have with the series, but the controls will be a serious problem for me. Are you guys sure there's no lefty mode? Or classic controller mode with analog stick sword slashing and aiming? Something? Anything...? I refuse to believe that Zelda isn't for me. :(

I guess it's possible that someone may map the motion controls to the Classic Controller for homebrew use, but I wouldn't hold my breath. You should try out Oracle of Ages and Oracles of Seasons if you like Link's Awakening!

Ah, I thought Seasons was merely okay so I never bothered with Ages. Maybe I should give it a try one day?

I've seen several lefties (including a reviewer) say that it controls just fine.
Some lefties are really adaptable. Like, some didn't have any problems whatsoever with TP, but, as we all know, a few others definitely ran into trouble. I got 77 stars in Mario Galaxy 1 before admitting to myself that the controls were very uncomfortable and awkward and I never wanted to deal with them again despite genuinely enjoying what the game did well. Sin and Punishment 2 was a nightmare for me mainly because of the controls.

I think my dilemma right now is mostly a combination of all this and not being the biggest Zelda fan to begin with. Maybe I'll get it and post impressions in the OT if it helps anyone else like me. I think what I'm wishing for is a lefty who previously had problems with TP on the Wii come and say that SS is a different story. That'd make me very happy.

How does being a lefty effect Mario Galaxy controls or even Sin and Punishment?
Mario: Needing to waggle for spin jump/vine swing spinning, grabbing those light points to attract yourself to them, all the star bits collection/shooting. Most of those things were kind of gimmicky, IMO. The core stuff like spin jump could've been easily mapped to a button, so, barring a few levels that emphasized grabbing from light point to light point, the game could've easily offered a classic control scheme. The issue with this game was more about everything feeling awkward, unwieldy, and the opposite of intuitive than being truly unplayable like other things, though.

As for Sin and Punishment, have you tried pointing at the screen over a long period of time with any amount of precision using your less dominant hand? It sucks switching hands, too, because character movement with the left analog stick is what everyone has learned over the years. So trying to remedy the aiming control just makes the movement a problem. The entire last boss I had to play aiming with my left hand because it was simply too much to handle for me trying to do it with my right. =\

Oh I understand now. I assumed you were holding the controls opposite to how right handers would. Meaning motion controls would be on the dominant hand.

Didn't consider that leftys have had the analog stick ingrained in their minds to be controlled by the dominant hand.

Sooo, if they had put in an option, left handers would have been screwed either way?

Yeah, it sucks. At this point I've basically accepted that I'm nearly as handicapped playing the Wii as someone with only one arm, haha.
*cries*

Pretty much, but with the option to choose preferred amount of screwed. :(

I'm the exact same way.

It was a pain to play TP and SMG 1 + 2.

Video game controls are weird. I've read all over the place that some folks just can't use the arrow keys on a keyboard because they need left-handed movement. But for me, I can't detect any difference. I even tried Sin & Punishment with the Wii Remote in my left hand and the nunchuk in my right, and it took just a few minutes of awkwardness to be perfectly fine with it. It sucks to hear that some people can't enjoy a great game just because of the controls.

And branny, just by the way, you should definitely check out Oracle of Ages. It's superb.

I'm just guessing, but I think SS will be even more problematic for you because precise movements are required, rather than just a shake of the controller. And oops, I didn't see that you already played Seasons. Personally, I think Ages is a lot better.

Wouldn't lack of IR benefit lefties in some way?
I guess that could potentially alleviate some problems (screen-outs, nitpicky IR pointing/losing calibration). But, as Crumpet Trumpet says, there's a bit more going on in SS that probably would offset those bonuses.

I think I'll wait for lefty impressions in the OT, but thank you all for being so understanding. <3

Maybe I'm not understanding you well, but you could still use your left hand to perform those precise actions?

Yeah, i know. The total price will end up in $70 range so i just decided to go with the gold anyway. I never preordered a bundle before. This is my first preorder content.

I suck at not looking at for great deals cuz i wasn't conscious all the time for looking one. I look at the full price and wait 'till it drops in a few months. Few months have passed and i forget about it. That's how i am.
Nintendo games take forever to reduce price; if they ever do.

Actual rupee spending would be amazing, or an infinite holding rupee bag, or a bank. Just whatever it takes to not open a chest and get the "NOT ENOUGH SPACE TO HOLD RUPEES LOL" message.

Sure, though there could be problems with doing that.

Mixing up the controls would create a disparity between how you're holding things and what you see Link doing, your shields and swords being completely mixed up. Not to mention controlling his walking/running with a hand you're not accustomed to using for character movement. Also, if there's some new voodoo 1:1 motion stuff, it could potentially get glitchy reading inputs from a hand it isn't programmed for, which is something I've noticed with the PS Move when lefty/righty settings are messed up.

Like with TP, I think it'd be less of a hassle to play SS holding the controllers the way Nintendo wants. And, as you noted, the lack of IR is probably a good way to remedy some of the awkwardness.

Fuck that message. I wanted to throw my Wii out of the window every time I saw that damn message.

Ugh, and then this bitch puts the Rupees BACK into the treasure chest! It drove me crazy in the Lakebed dungeon when I was searching for this one key and all the treasure chests were just Rupees. UGH, like hell am I gonna wade my way to this nasty dungeon just to collect all these Rupees after I get a wallet upgrade.

It could create some awkwardness, sure. And I completely understand. It is a bit unfortunate that some lefties will feel unusual, but we're all newbies to the sword controls, so everyone will feel a bit awkward when they first start playing. I'll still try to have fun though- actually- I think I will have fun.

After finally giving up on hopes of Amazon's Zelda bundle back in stock, I preordered today at Best Buy. I'm officially at maximum hype for this game! 15 days...
The reviews so far look great as well!

You should. Ages is far more puzzly and more "thinking man's Zelda". The last few segments will have you on edge.

All these countdowns are making me want to break out Majora's Mask again. All we need is a giant, hovering Skyward Sword box to be slowly but surely moving towards this thread.

I started playing Minish Cap again but I got bored when Zelda got turned to stone.

That'd be Jon Holmes.

I am guessing he's doing the review for Destructoid, then.

Yep it seems he is. He's already saying that so far he thinks it's the best 3D zelda. He also said this game is to ocarina what Mario Galaxy is to Mario 64.

Dear God...

EDIT: He says so far it's getting a 9.9 because of the flying motion controls he doesn't like.
