Slate Article - Why is Porn so Aesthetically Awful?

Terrible article.

This quote in particular is the most laughable.
Even as their magazines wither, contemporary, online porn continues in the tradition they established. And unfortunately, that tradition includes a strong, but not at all inevitable, dose of misogyny.

The print / physical porn houses are dying because their content is not worth paying for. It is not worth paying for because it is shitty compared to the alternatives. It is shitty because of both the price and the content. People are not willing to pay for their content because their content sucks. People don't like the crap they were producing.

In the early days of online porn, all online porn sought to emulate print/tape/dvd porn. Today, who do you know who pays for a "traditional" porn site? Who do you know who goes to amateur sites? The trend is clear - people don't want to see the old jackhammer fest outside of shock value. And now for shock value, or for those who are into that sort of thing, you can seek out videos of people being pounded by actual jackhammers, or whatever else you want.

The fact that a few clowns produced porn and constantly tried to one-up each other with how many dicks they could stick in a hole, or how much dick slapping they could get away with, doesn't mean that's what people desire sexually. It just means that major porn production resorts to shock value to get sales. People are able to masturbate to last years film just fine, so they've got to find something "new" to keep people buying. A move to HDTV, and dalliances in POV, Choose Your Own Adventure Porn, and 3D are pretty much the only legitimately new things in porn in the last 30 years.

Saying what you see in modern, production porn is driven by what porn viewers want sexually, or even by what the creators want sexually, is ridiculous. The market for that trash shrinks every time someone discovers decent porn on the internet. Was this article written in 1999?

Yeah, the same articule has been written a billion times before. What I want to see is someone write about the subhumanization of the black man in porn and the underlying racism.

But isn't 'tasteful' porn just as embarrassing as 'regular' porn? I mean, I doubt your girlfriend would look at your porn and say, "wow, this is really tasteful porn Master Ninja. Put it next to King Kong and The Illusionist on my shelf." Although I could be wrong. (Disclaimer: I haven't actually been to the site nor plan to go, so I could have the complete wrong idea about the X-Art thing)
My girlfriend is no prude. She is comfortable with human sexuality. She knows that I look at pornography and on a few occasions we have watched some together.

She has zero tolerance for men who abuse women, and any porn with the appearance of a woman getting mistreated would be a complete turn-off for her.

ITT people tab over to X-Art, rub one off, and then report back to respond to the article.

Porn is pretty degrading to women for the most part, but as mentioned above, that's the market. Softcore porn is boring. If I want to see two normal people having affectionate sex, I wait for my girlfriend to get home. It's the appeal of "I will never do this nor would any woman ever let me."

Anyone that listens to Howard Stern knows how disturbing some porn has become. Sal from that show has an obsession with some really disgusting stuff. Just the audio clips from that will make you want to vomit.

I typically watch lesbian porn. A lot of that is actually made by women, so you don't run into the really extreme stuff too much.

Those X-Art chicks need to eat a sandwich. Whats with porn where the guy shoves his fingers in the chicks mouth or pulls our mouth open while he's doing her from the behind. Shit doesn't make any sense.

I honestly would not want to be with someone who would let me treat her the way some of these chicks are treated in porn. Well, not in a relationship anyway.

Don't knock it till you try it. I've met plenty of very strong women who like to be treated like shit in bed, because that's how they get off.

See, I filled up on Crazy Bitch in highschool. I can't imagine those kinds of women being too emotionally stable.

I've been wrong before, though.

Hmmm, I don't think "misogyny" has much to do with it. The article is more interested in that than any "art analysis" of porn.

"Mainstream" porn just seems to be directed poorly, it looks too fake and awkward(which is exactly what it is while filming), and sometimes the girls are unappealing and can't hide their "addict" nature baking themselves in gaudy makeup. Stuff like X-Art is definitely doesn't suffer from this problem.

Porn (movies) was better in 70s/80s.

Bleh. Shitty music and horrible editing. At least they're trying, but even a first-year film student can do better.
First year film study can't light the scene properly out of paperbag. I think you should put up or shut up.

Wait, can someone explain this to me? What is subhuman with interracial porn that involves black men? Most of the stuff I have seen has been the same thing as if it was a white dude involved. Do you mean comments about the whole monster cock and huge black dick or something? Or is there a bad side of interracial porn that I haven't seen? Then again I am surprised that there is porn where the word bigger is used. Never seen that before. Maybe it is because I just stream porn or something.

I was once linked a part of a Blacks on Blondes vid as a joke but it's basically a bunch of black dudes invading some chicks home and chasing her around the place, I don't remember what happens after that.

uh... NOBODY and I mean NOBODY gives a damn about Playboy, penthouse or any of the other magazines mentioned in the article. nowadaysthere is porn for every category and fetish. don't like teh rough stuff, they have soft-core, amateur, etc. and if that doesn't do it they got retro stuff.

How did you not bold these?

Bob Guccione doesn’t come off much better, despite Edison’s best efforts. Caligula, Guccione’s notorious attempt to enter the film business, featured so many sex scenes degrading to actresses (including vaginal penetration with an eel)

Guccione eventually fired Brass most of the way through filming, not for subjecting actresses to either painful devices (the less said about the barbed wire, the "tongue machine," or the giant, splintering wooden dildos, the better) or sex with animals, but because Brass had run over budget and also because Guccione felt that the actresses in some scenes needed to be sexier.

WTF?!

I dunno guys, I watched this Spider Man XXX video and it was a great adventure. Stuff that X-Art junk. Upside down blowjobs are far more entertaining.

Why is this article so analytically awful?

Welcome to 99% of Slate articles. Fascinating lede followed up with an obviously hastily prepared 2 page article offering little insight.

From the title I was hoping it would explain why porn becomes woefully uninteresting and mildly disturbing after I've rubbed one off.
It's related to the evolutionary trait that human males have. The human male's genitals are formed in a way to force other men's genetic code out through the act of pumping. This is also the reason their is a clear desire to pull out after release, or else you would be removing your own genetic code.

But how does she look now?

She looks the same and the redo on her boobs gets a positive review from me.

I wonder if the author of this article has seen any of what Kink produces over in San Francisco.

I would say porn is geared towards it's core audience, perma-single dudes who objectify women because they can't attain one. So in response they want to see the women treated like crap.

And yes I know couples and women watch porn, but that would even be one slice out of an 8 slice graph.

1 out of 8? All couples and women fit into that? Not that I would doubt your words, old sport, but what is your source?

Edit: Also, what about males that are in relationships that still watch porn. They aren't 'perma-single dudes', are they part of the 1/8?

Well my apologies then. It's just that you picked such a concrete number that I thought you might not be pulling numbers out of your ass. My mistake. Resume your generalizations.

I would hesitate to assert that porn consumption straightforwardly reflects sexual and social attitudes. For my own part, it tends to twist and intensify them. There is a particular frame of mind for it.

There is a lot of truth to this. I think I was a little too nice in bed to the last girl I was with. She kept hinting at wanting all sorts of shit that most girls wouldn't be interested in. I think my folly was not picking up on the signals in time.

I think some guys here aren't giving women credit for how freaky they can get.

I kind of agree with this and in a way think its gone a bit too far. Personally though, if there's porn that shows woman forcing to be gagged by a penis or slapped in the face when they dont do what their male counterpart wants, I turn it off. I have no interest in that. That's not to say, however, that I don't enjoy that dirty girl fantasy. I want to see that woman who does the stuff that I enjoy seeing that I dont normally get at home. They just dont need to be treated like an animal.

That's a good way of looking at it.

X-Art and anything by Viv Thomas are just two exceptions.

Indeed. My GF loves being choked, having her hair pulled and generally fucked quite aggressively.

When I want to be stimulated, I want to see people honestly enjoying themselves. This rules out a vast majority of mainstream porn.

Choking, roughness, manhandling, etc, within the bounds you've agreed to, sure. But the things like...abuse stuff or like mental things or even like verbal abuse where I have to think and make things up, anything that gets into my headspace will fuck up the mood in a way. Jam it up like a gun.

I'm really fine with just serious vigor and desire, to be honest. Don't need the whole chicken. Don't tell me you don't think differently about someone after they request rape fantasy...

Someone who just really wants someone else, and that other who just really needs to be all over someone, real desire, there's nothing like that.

On the other hand I would like an older woman to smack me around but that's only because I have issues.

I don't. At least nothing bad.

It's like saying "Don't tell me you don't think differently about someone after they request anal."

All the folk touting X-Art - you do realise that 99% of the models are all regular porn actresses that you'll find at IAFD and Eurobabeindex etc?

Hells, they have Sasha Grey, Tori Black and Lexi Belle.

True, they seem to have managed a lot of flattering pic sets and so forth, but it's been done before and much better by Met-Art and Hegre to name but two (where the models usually are true amateurs)

For me (and my fiance - she loves her porn) it simply depends on the mood, although she is much more likely to be looking for filth than I am (her favourite stars are Belladonna and Rocco believe it or not, the filthiest of the filthy - she loves dirty talk)

Women are complicated, and although my fiance is fine with porn, she really doesn't like me looking at still images of model-level nudes, she gets more insecure about that, strange as it may seem.

Anyway, I think the Slate article missed some things - although the porn industry is obviously still male dominated, there are far more female-driven studios and companies out there, and some of those (see Belladonna) are just as extreme if not more so than the norm.

I think the fundamental issue is that back when I were a lad (late 80s), my porn fix was smuggling a VHS from my dad's collection, or getting a tape from someone at school, I remember the first time I saw Annette Haven and Seka, my mind was blown!
There was no internet then, and it was difficult to get porn, but of course the internet has destroyed nearly all taboo's and the ability to be shocking (which was always one of porn's main selling points) is so much more difficult now.

And of course, you see porn EVERYWHERE. It's all over the net.

So of course, the porn makers are going to push the boundaries as far as they can, it's the nature of the beast.

The only porn I'll never delete would be some of my classics (aforementioned) and the early Sapphic Erotica stuff.

I'll be interested to see where the industry is in 10 years though.

From years and years of watching porn, this kind of stuff isn't the norm that I've seen. It's out there sure, but you really have to go looking to fill this specific type of degrading fetish. I know a girl who likes Bangbus.

I was referencing both porn and the reality of the desires behind them. What people actually want to see versus the odd things some people like, and then compared to what the industry is offering.

This trend I'm noticing anyway. It's either boring ass fuck or weird but in a bad way.

1) That's not the most traumatic thing I can think of.

2) Consent.

Okay, I can agree with this. My girl likes it rough, too. However, she doesn't like it as rough as one of my exes, that turned me off by how badly she liked to get hate-fucked. Sucks, because she could ride like a pro, but dude. You feel sorta like a douche when your girl is asking you to slap her, and keep slapping her when you're fucking, and the next morning she has bruises on her cheek and neck and wrists. She seriously looked like I trying to beat the shit out of her.

Would have probably made for a high-selling porn.
