SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

How are these added to the Snes? I went into FTP and downloaded the backgrounds folder and also added the file mentioned in the sticky. Is there a certain process i need to go to add the borders?

If you've uploaded your borders and the file with the overmount command, they should show up the next time you reboot the system.

Does anyone have recommendations for lesser-known games that are worth putting on the system?

I don't know what is lesser-known to you, but here are some titles that sometimes barely get mentioned:

Arcana
A good beginner 1st person dungeon crawler by HAL (of Kirby fame), with a great soundtrack to boot. Try it out, it has an automap feature, so you'll never get lost. And there are no unfair traps in dungeons like most of these types of games. And the music... oh the music.

Brain Lord
Overhead action-RPG with some nice puzzles. By Enix.
LwJGx3U.png

Brawl Bros.
Good beat-em up in the vein of Streets of Rage (Genesis). The sequel, Peace Keepers, is also good. But get the Japanese version (Rushing Beat Shura), because the USA version changed a lot of stuff for the worse.
pVHgGDv.png

Dragon View
Very good action-RPG, sequel to the much like-it-or-hate-it Drakkhen.
ctdTIxB.png

Firepower 2000
This is pretty much the Jackal (NES) sequel we never got. Although this one plays more like a traditional Shoot'em up.
IhmWCX9.png

Hagane
Great ninja action game. This is trully the next gen Ninja Gaiden.
7uNtOiH.png

Ignition Factor
Overhead action game. You play as a fireman putting fires out and rescuing people.
44gwWaX.png

Joe and Mac 2
This sequel went with a non-linear Metroid-like structure. It's pretty good.
8YVSKYC.png

Nosferatu
Plays a bit like Prince of Persia, but there's more action and it's very moody.
ycahHqZ.png

Operation Logic Bomb
Sequel to the Game Boy Fortified Zone. Destroy enemies, open new paths, disarm bombs. If you've played Alien Syndrome, you'll know how this one plays.
21OnxZ3.png

Pocky and Rocky 1 & 2
Shoot'em up goodness mixed with action and RPG elements.
yGT7hDv.gif

Run Saber
Plays just like Strider, although it's very easy.
5vzoD2L.gif

Shadowrun
One of my favorite "RPGs". Great atmosphere, great music, strange characters. You have to ask questions to people to advance the story. It's a mix of adventure with point-and-click elements.
yz26nhj.png

Super Adventure Island 2
This one they went with a non-linear Metroid-like structure. It's pretty good too.
k2soPEd.jpg

Super Ninja Boy
Nice RPG from this long-running series (in Japan).
ZvMcCdF.png

Twisted Tales of Spike Mcfang
Quirky Adventure-RPG starring a Vampire.
WWdiNfP.gif

Ultimate Fighter
Decent action game with RPG elements from this long-running series (in Japan). Sequel to Flying Warriors for the NES/GB.
Onis2Z7.png

Wild Guns
Great arcade lightgun shooter (minus the lightgun).
AcW8vXK.png

X-Men Mutant Apolcalypse
Decent action game by Capcom.

I’m going to need to collect all the borders people have shared at this point, or hope someone puts them all in one place. I’m going to wait until the weekend to try the FTP method to put them in.

As I mentioned before, I think borders that have artwork built around them instead of being cropped out look the best. For example, can someone make an FF border that has these character arts posted around it? https://static1.squarespace.com/sta...7/final-fantasy-6-mogo-in-cio-da-fantasia.jpg

US Super SF2 seems to work in this new one, as well as Seiken Densetsu 3.

However global command line -filter 2 -magfilter 0 seems to just turn off scanlines entirely.

Anyone gave a try to Space Megaforce on this new Hakchi build?

Each bass drum hits in the music results in a sound peak under 2.20.14 so if it works fine now I may cave and install the new one.

Can anyone also confirm with SD3? That’s one of the big three I’m hoping to work properly, as well as Terranigma and Treasure of the Rudras.

Are all the kinks worked out for this stuff yet. Don't really want to mod it yet. Or I may try to get another one and do it on that one.

The new hakchi update doesn't include the snes_games folder anymore. Which is smart thinking of cluster for careless users.

Is the only drawback of retroarch the loading times and missing rewind feature?

Complete with screen drop-shadow to just make it pop a little.

Do I need to remove my games from hackhi2 and add them again to get it to update lorom/hirom stuff?
Also, it doesn’t prompt me to switch to Retroarch for problem games either.

Now that we have so many incredible square icons I think I'm gonna take the plunge and start editing what I have, and remove thumbnails.

One day I will sit down and play this instead of tinkering with it.

Some of these backgrounds are beautiful, awesome job guys (and girls)!

I'll hold off on importing any until there's a simple tool within hakchi to do it, and because all of these links are blocked on my only Windows computer :(

Ah ha! I think I have it figured out. I just need to wait until some cool CRT TV ones are created. I saw a couple posted but it was just a png instead of all the files needed. I guess I could make my own files based off the posted PNG.

Has RetroArch been updated for the Mini at all?. Ive been testing out a nice CRT scanline shader for someone that runs at 100% speed on the snes classic so think ill be moving all my games over to Retroarch just for the better scanlines and game comparability

Someone just told me hi-res issues have been improved / solved? with the latest update, but I'm not finding a whole on this so is it even true? I'm going to finally hack my SNES tonight so I can check this stuff myself, I'm sorry I have to ask.

WAT! Nobody told me the first frame is an ambilight frame. Thought it would be static.

omg, it's even called "ambient". stupid me.
I wonder if it is somewhat customisable. Animated backgrounds?

Didn't RetroArch 9.0b come with a new Scanline shader? I saw nothing new in the shader settings of RetroArch. I'm in search of a great simple scanline shader for use in the SNES MIni :/

EDIT:

Found it. It's not a shader. It's under the ONSCREEN OVERLAY menu. Probably less resource intensive.

So lets say I want retroarch to install Illusion of Time PAL version becuase its one of the only supernes game translated to castillian spanish (and famous for that), so play as the cartirdge I have becuase its nostalgiv for me.

But I read in the op that PAL versions dont work well with the mini. If I convert it to NTSC as the OP suggest, do I lose it being Ilussion fo Time (instead of Gaia) and the spanish translation?

Are there any good non fantasy RPGs other than Shadowrun and Earthbound?

I feel like playing an RPG but I'd love a more modern setting.

Anyone have a good link to some box art compilations? Hoping to find some good Final Fantasy ones, as well as a good Sailor Moon one

Or does someone have a PSD of the SNES box?

I feel like playing an RPG but I'd love a more modern setting.

The Shin Megami Tensei series generally has a modern, post-apocalyptic setting. None of the SNES games left Japan, but Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei 1, and SMT 2 all have good fan translations available and are pretty affordable imports. I really like all of them but SMT2 is the one I'd highly recommend, it's one of the SNES JRPG classics if you ask me. The other two might feel a little dated depending on your tolerance for that sort of stuff.

Oh and I guess I should mention they're first first-person dungeon crawlers, that might not be what you have in mind.

clean install of 2.21b (2.0.21.32), with no savestates or any other modules installed, is now reporting ~20mb less max storage, down to 238.3mb from 258.3mb

Sorry if this has already been asked (searched for "NES Rom") but is it possible to add NES games to this, too? Would prefer to only have one box under the TV if possible.

We should really get a GAF compilation going, I know I've seen some nice Final Fantasy ones here in the style of the original Japanese covers. I'll try to search for them.

But here's an album I found on reddit that has a rather nice Final Fantasy V and VI in it:

https://imgur.com/a/yjPEf

And these aren't what you're looking for, but here's what I have made so far in case anyone needs them.

Secret of Mana 2

Dragon Quest 1+2 and DQ5.

(by the way, I might tweak mine in the future because I've noticed some minor things that are bothering me. Shouldn't matter for the size the SNES Mini uses though. I'll update the original posts if I do so.)

What is the easiest process to convert pal roms into ntsc?

Why do my PAL ROMs have issues?

The SNES Mini is designed to run NTSC ROMs, and so PAL ones will exhibit problems. Use NTSC where possible, or apply one of my patches to your PAL ROM to convert it to NTSC. There are two files in there, one for LoROM and one for HiROM. To find out which one you need, open your ROM in Snes9x and it will say at the bottom when it boots.

YQ19k5r.jpg

Thats what you're looking for in snes9x - if it says hi use HiROM, if it says lo use LoROM

In addition, when people post about C7 errors (bad rom / dump errors), it's exceedingly obvious that they're posting about a pirated ROM.

Excellent post and much appreciated, however I wanted to clarify that C7 errors can come from other sources than bad dumps. I once got C7 errors on every single game because I set a global emulator command line option (-volume) and it must have conflicted with the -volume already set per-game. That was a tense moment, especially since I set the flag hours before updating and I had forgotten!

A couple of questions, I'm about to update hackchi, does RetroArch 0.9 work now?, yesterday games wouldn't boot and went to a black screen instead.

Also, does X2 work properly yet?, the last time I checked the audio became heavily garbled in Bubble Crab's stage, I know the original had slowdown, but I don't remember the audio going to shit.

Not what I was thinking of, but Tevious made nice stuff:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=251310011&postcount=371

The aspect ratio of the art on their Final Fantasy IV cover is off though, so here's a quick fix I made.

ff4fixed4gs9u.png

As for a PSD, I have been using this one:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B16fY0nCoRmMWlVQS2QyWUZoNWM/view?usp=sharing

The dimensions are right and it's high quality, but it's not perfect! As TheMoon would point out certain details like the Super Nintendo logo aren't exactly faithful to the original. I'll try to look for, or create something faithful myself, in the future.
