I mean, what's the sample size of guys being offered $2 tricks so we can derive some good data before applying it to the general population of males in North America? I mean, for all we know, Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, those places could have far cheaper prostitutes and that's common place.

I feel more sympathy for a hooker that was forced into that profession since being a child, or a woman being a sex slave that gets sold and bargained for. I still have sympathy for a plain old hooker I guess, but for some amount of hookers in the United States they chose to be a hooker.

Well, I'm not well versed in prostitution, but it depends on what kind of hooker we're talking about.
Being a hooker is a perfectly viable career option for some. There are high-end escort services, private escorts that manage their own business, and legal brothels that are well-regulated. I think choice is a legitimate factor here.
Then we have the other type of prostitutes, street walkers, illegal immigrants, sex slaves, drug addicts. I think uh... less choice is the most sanitary way to put it. Let's look at the OP's story. Worn, haggard woman offering $2 tricks? Something awful has gone on with her life. Dunno whether it's someone else's fault, her own fault, mental illness, whatever. But the state we see a person in can help determine whether we feel empathy.

It's not douchey. The guy was surprised by a $2 trick offer. His natural reaction was to laugh. If you did that on a candid camera show, I bet most of the people would laugh as their immediate reaction, because that's what people do when they are surprised with something so outrageous and disarming. It really seems like reaching to me to play up the prostitute as a victim (of the OP). He said "no thank you" not "get the fuck away you disgusting animal". It's completely understandable to have sympathy for the plight of someone like that, but that's not something to hang around the neck of someone who was ambushed with this, and who clearly didn't TRY to be rude.

People have their problems, but they are still people like you and me for the most part, so I don't think it's necessary to talk to prostitutes like you're at their husband's funeral just because they are in that line of work. It's condescending. More often than not, she'll have the quicker wit to come back with in these situations.

But, a crackhead, homeless, and down is not that example. She has more than likely reached this point in her life due to cycles of poverty, low education opportunity, teachers that didn't care, broken home, an alcoholic father, a mother who was just not prepared to raise a child, and generally, hardly a whole lot of good happening in her life.
