What happened the Meryl?

The only thing we get from Snake in MGS2 is a little mumbling of her name is him dream (as Pliskin). So... is she alive?

I KNOW we've spoken about this in the past... but that was like 3 boards ago... someone refresh my aging memory.

She died. The real ending was when "Dave" and Otacon took off on a magical "NON-HOMOSEXUAL!" snowmobile getaway.

So my question is this:

Why even HAVE that ending in there if it doesn't fit?

Perhaps this is why we haven't seen multiple endings in the last two installments?

I'm no expert on MGS, but I always assumed she survived. In MGS2, there is a scene in which Snake points to his bandana and says "infinite ammo," the "infinite ammo" bandana was the item you got for getting the ending where Meryl survives. I also heard that that the Shadow Moses summary in MGS2 says that Meryl lived.

She's alive, actually. Snake makes a slight referece about tomboys to Otacton in the Tanker chapter. She's also in a Snake Tales mission, but I haven't played Substance, so I don't know the details.

Dunno, maybe both endings happened. I'm just going by the start of MGS2. Maybe all 3 of them survived and they had a "NON-HOMOSEXUAL!" 3-some after the magical snowmobile getaway.

She lives. If you call Otacon after beating Olga at the start of MGS2, they'll take about her for a bit and Snake says something like "It didn't work out". I believe she's also mentioned to be alive in the documents you can read in MGS2.

well, Otacon didn't die in the Meryll ending. The base wasn't bombed.

From "In the Darkness of Shadow Moses: The Unofficial Truth" in MGS2

Snake and Meryl appear to have successfully made it off Shadow Moses Island. I could however find no traces of them; I hope that the same is true for those who have an interest in seeing them silenced.

No. MGS is the start of a new series. It even has somewhat of a cliffhanger at the end.
